David Bowie - 1983-04-27 - Dallas, TX (SBD)

David Bowie was part of the 1996 Rock Hall Of Fame class, which also included Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jefferson Airplane, Little Willie John, Pink Floyd, Pete Seeger, The Shirelles and The Velvet Underground. David Byrne of the Talking Heads presented Bowie for induction. Bowie, wasn’t in the building, however, as he was in Helsinki, Finland, touring in support of his album, Outside. Madonna accepted on his behalf, and Marianne Faithful performed Rebel Rebel.  Stevie Ray Vaughn was elected in 2015, along with his band Double Trouble. Other inductees that year included Lou Reed, Bill Withers, Joan Jett and Ringo Starr.

This post goes back 13 years earlier to Bowie's tour in support of the Let's Dance album, when he teamed up with Vaughn. While attending the 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival, Bowie was impressed by a then unknown blues guitarist by the name of Stevie Ray Vaughan. So much so, that Bowie invited Vaughan to play on his next album. That disc, entitled, Let’s Dance, would blend a dance format with blues guitar rock to create a distinctive and unique sound. The public loved it, as the album went to #4 on the US Billboard charts and climbed all the way to the top spot in the UK. The album yielded 3 top 15 singles in the US, Modern Love at #14, China Girl at #10 and the title track which reached #1. When Bowie went on tour in support of the album, however, SRV could not accompany him due to contractual issues. 1990s - #1: On March 4, 1990, David Bowie embarked on his Sound & Vision tour,  a run of shows built upon an unusual premise. The set list for the tour would feature a host of his greatest hits, which Bowie would then retire from all future concert performances. For fans, it would supposedly be their last opportunity to hear classics such as Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Changes, just to name a few, in concert. Fortunately, Bowie didn’t completely abandon his old material in future tours, but at the time no one was quite certain how serious he was about the claim. This soundboard recording captures Bowie on  the 2nd night of the tour, in Montreal, on March 6, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.

The album received mixed reviews but climbed to #29 on the Billboard charts in the US, and made it all the way to the #3 spot in the UK. On October 7, Bowie launched a world tour in support of the album, which included stops in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The tour was cut short in June 2004, however, when after a show in Germany, Bowie was diagnosed with a blocked artery that required an angioplasty procedure. This soundboard recording captures Bowie just a few month's before the tour's premature end, on February 2, 2004, 22 years ago today, in Los Angeles at the Shrine Auditorium. Launched in 1993, the Phoenix Festival was positioned as an alternative to the established Glastonbury and Reading Festivals. It was held at Long Marston Airfield near Stratford-upon-Avon and was one of the first four-day festivals in Britain. Unfortunately, the festival was plagued with issues with crowd control, prcing, staffing and the location, an old airfield.  The final nail in the coffin cam in 1996 when issues with security caused thousands to miss David Bowie's set on July 18, 1996, 29 years ago today.  The festival lasted one more year, then folded in 1998.  In any event, while ticket holders may have missed Bowie, yiu won't as this FM boradcast captures his entire set.

This post also includes sets from Elton John, with both Kiki Dee and George Michael; Santana, with Pat Metheny; the Who in their first show since their 1982 farewell tour, and Ashford & Simpson, with a wheel chair bound Teddy Pendergrass making his first public appearance since the car accident that left him paralyzed. David Bowie played only 4 concerts in 2000, all in the month of June.  There of those shows were at small venues - 2 concerts at the 3000 seat Roseland Ballroom in New York City on June 16 and 19, and a performance at BBC Radio theater before on a crowd of 250 on June 27. The other concert has a slightly different feel to it as headlined the Glastonbury Festival on June 25, 2000, a quarter century ago today, before a crowd of over 100,000, as captured in this BBC broadcast!

In 1996, the Loreley Festival expanded to 2 days, and scored its biggest name to date when David Bowie closed the first day, on June 22, 1996, 29 years ago today, as captured in this soundboard recording. Just a few weeks earlier, on June 4, Bowie had launched the Outside Summer Festivals Tour at the famed Budokan Hall in Tokyo. The tour was in support of the album Outside, which had been released in late 1995 and marked the first time Bowie had worked with Brian Eno since the 1970s. The tour would run until July 21 and encompass 27 shows in Asia and Europe.

2000s - #4: On June 11, 2002, David Bowie released the album, Heathen, which would reach # 14 on the Billboard charts, his highest charting album in the US since Tonight in 1984. The disc also earned some of his strongest reviews since Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) in 1980. Worldwide, Heathen sold over two million copies and ranked in the top 5 on the charts in England, France, Germany, Norway and Denmark. Most significantly, the album dealt with Bowie’s impressions of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the US. Bowie was living in NY at the time of the attacks, and opened the Concert For New York City at Madison Square Garden in October 2001 that raised money for victims of the tragedy. Heathen, with songs such as Slow Burn, that described a world coming apart and gripped by fear, and Sunday, with lyrics such as "Nothing remains...everything has changed”, reflected the devastating impact of that day. Bowie went on a short summer tour in support of the disc, and then scheduled 7 extra shows on the East Coast in October. The first 5 of those shows were christened the New York Marathon Tour, as Bowie played 1 show in each of NYC’s five boroughs. He quipped that “I could get home from all the gigs on roller skates”. This Soundboard/IEM recording captures Bowie on the 2nd of his 5 nights in NY, at St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, on October 12, 2002, 22 years ago today. David Bowie launched his Sound & Vision tour on March 4, 1990, a run of shows built upon an unusual premise. The set list for the tour would feature a host of his greatest hits, which Bowie would then retire from all future concert performances. For fans, it would supposedly be their last opportunity to hear classics such as Suffragette City, Ziggy Stardust, Rebel Rebel and Changes, just to name a few, in concert. Fortunately, Bowie didn’t completely abandon his old material in future tours, but at the time no one was quite certain how serious he was about the claim. This soundboard recording captures Bowie at the Rock In Rio Festival on September 20, 1990, 33 years ago today.

1970s - #2:  On June 6, 1972, David Bowie released his 5th studio album, the now legendary The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The album tells the story of Bowie's alter ego Ziggy Stardust, a rock star who acts as a messenger for extraterrestrial beings. The character of Ziggy also helped shapre what became know as glam rock. While the album only went to #75 on the Billboard charts at the time of release, the disc is now considered one of rock’s greatest works. Rolling Stone, for example, ranked it at #35 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time. Bowie spent a year on the road in support of the album. This soundboard  recording from July 3, 1973, a half century ago today, captures the final show of that tour, as Bowie annouced during the show that he was officially retiring the character of Ziggy.

On September 16, 2003, Bowie released the album Reality, his 23rd studio disc. The album received mixed reviews but climbed to #29 on the Billboard charts in the US, and made it all the way to the #3 spot in the UK. On October 7, Bowie launched a world tour in support of the album, which included stops in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia. The tour was cut short in June, however, when after a show in Germany, Bowie was diagnosed with a blocked artery that required an angioplasty procedure. This IEM matrix recording captures Bowie just a few weeks before the tour's premature end, in Buffalo on May 25, 2004, 18 years ago today.
