In 1981, the Dr. Pepper Music Festival was forced out of the Wollman Rink due to complaints from local residents about the noise from the concerts. As a result, the festival moved to Pier 84, on Manhattan’s West Side, right along the Hudson River. Two years later, Miller took over the sponsorship of the series, which ran another 5 years until 1988. I was fortunate to attend a host of shows on Pier 84 between 1982 and 1987. In addition to the great music, I will always remember that the concerts were held in the shadow of the U.S.S. Intrepid. The former aircraft carrier turned museum was docked right next door at Pier 86, providing an incredible backdrop to every show. This FM broadcast captures Ian Hunter on September 11, 1981, 33 years ago today, during the inaugural season of shows at Pier 84. The show is noteworthy for 2 reasons. First, during the introductions, fans are advised that the concert is being taped for a new network called MTV. That station had just launched on August 1, 1981. Second, if you see the video for this show (plenty of clips are on You-tube), you’ll notice that the Intrepid is conspicuous by its absence. That’s because the ship did not dock at Pier 86 until 1982!

The late Mick Ronson doesn't really get the attention he deserves as a guitarist. Folks usually forget that Ronson played with David Bowie as part of the Spiders From Mars, with Bob Dylan as part if the Rolling Thunder Review, and as part of Ian Hunter's backing band. Rolling Stone recognized him on both their 2003 and 2011 lists of the best guitarists of all time, ranking him #64 and $41, respectively. This soundboard recording captures Ronson supporting Ian Hunter in Berkeley on July 7, 1979, 38 years ago today.

Robert Plant - 2006-06-23 - Beacon Theatre, NY (SBD)

A decade ago this very day, Robert Plant was the headliner at the Benefit For Arthur Lee concert at New York's Beacon Theatre, a show which raised money for Lee's medical expenses from his bout with leukemia. Plant was joined by Ian Hunter during his set. As captured in this soundboard recording, Plant performed thirteen songs – five from Arthur Lee & Love, five from his days with Led Zeppelin, and three others, including a duet with Ian Hunter on For What Its Worth.  The former Led Zep front man told the audience of his great admiration for Arthur Lee, dating back to the mid-'60s. Unfortunately, Lee died of his illness just six weeks after the concert.

Ringo 2001 #1:
In 1989, Ringo launched the first version of his All Starr Band tour, an ensemble where, as Ringo put it it, "everybody on stage is a star in their own right". While Ringo headlined these tours, singing his Beatles and solo material, his supporting band consisted of major players in the rock world, who would perform their own tunes, often with Ringo on drums. In 2001, Ringo presented version #7 of his All Starr Band, featuring Roger Hodgson (from Supertramp), Ian Hunter, Howard Jones, Greg Lake (from ELP & King Crimson) and Sheila E.  This soundboard recording captures Ringo and his guests on August 18, 2001, 14  years ago today, in Fort Worth, TX. That disc went to #35 on the Billboard charts and yielded 2 tunes that received significant airplay on MTv, Just Another Night and Cleveland Rocks. Ten years later, the two were still working together, and this soundboard recording captures them live in San Jose on December 16. 1989, two dozen years ago today. Their set includes a cover of the Velvet Underground’s White Light White Hear. Ronson, of course, was no stranger to that song, having played guitar on David Bowie’s rendition of the tune, recorded in 197, but not released until 10 years later.
