The Clash - 1982-10-09 - SNL, New York, NY (TV SBD)

As mentioned earlier this month, The Clash were part of the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's Class of 2003, which also featured Elvis Costello and The Police.  The ceremeony was a celebration of Punk and New Wave.

This TV soundboard recording captures The Clash on Saturday Night Live on October 9, 1982, 44 years ago today. The band was riding the crest of a wave of popularity triggered by 2 huge radio and MTV hits, Should I Stay or Should I Go, and Rock the Casbah. Four days after SNL, they would open for The Who at Shea Stadium, with many saying that they stole the show from the classic rock veterans. Who knew then that it was the beginning of the end? Within a year, Mick Jones had left the band. But, for a few brief moments in 1982, the Clash were on top of the rock world.

The Clash - 1982-08-17 - Akron, OH (SBD)

In 1982, the Clash were riding the crest of a wave of popularity triggered by 2 huge radio and MTV hits, Should I Stay or Should I Go, and Rock the Casbah. Two of my buddies from college and I got tickets to see the Clash at the University of Pennsylvania on August 27, 1982, the first, last and only time I would see them live. The saga of that show - especially the trip there - is one of my favorite tales from my book! Less than 2 months later, the band would be opening for The Who at Shea Stadium, with many saying that they stole the show from the classic rock veterans. Who knew then that it was the beginning of the end? Within a year, Mick Jones had left the band. But, for a few brief moments in 1982, the Clash were on top of the rock world.

While there's no recording of the U Penn show, I do have a fantastic soundboard from 10 days earlier in Akron, on August 17, 1982, 44 years ago today.  Download this one to hear the group that once billed itself as "The Only Band That Matters".

The Clash - 1980-06-10 - Bristol, UK (SBD)

I saw The Clash once in August 1982, a concert I've discussed on numeorus occasions on this blog since I almost missed it! The saga of that show - especially the trip there - is one of my favorite tales from my book!

This soundboard recording goes back 2 years earlier, capturing The Clash on June 10, 1980, 46 years ago today, on tour in Bristol in support of the album London Calling. Recorded in the summer of 1979, and released on December 14 of that year, London Calling is often hailed as the greatest album of the punk/new wave era. Rolling Stone ranked it 8th of its list of the 500 best albums of all time. Robert Christgau described London Calling as "warm, angry, and thoughtful, confident, melodic, and hard-rocking" and called it "the best double-LP since Exile on Main Street." The cover photo, which  features Paul Simonon smashing his bass, a perfect punk rock moment, was shot at The Palladium in New York on September 21, 1979, a concert we posted here.

The Clash - 1983-05-28 - US Festival, Devore, CA (TV SBD)

Over Memorial Day Weekend 1983, Steve Wozniak of Apple hosted the 2nd US Festival (the first has been discussed here) at Glen Helen Regional Park near Devore, California. Over 650,000 people attended the 3 day event, and Wozniak lost over $12 million! Each day featured a different musical genre. Opening Day, May 28 was New Wave Day, with such acts as The Clash, English Beat, INXS, Flock of Seagulls, Stray Cats and Men At Work. I'm not quite sure how the last 2 qualified as New Wave! Day 2, was Heavy Metal Day and included Van Halen, Ozzy, and Judas Priest. Finally, day 3 was Rock Day (as if the other 2 days weren't rock??) and featured U2, David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, Joe Walsh and, this post's featured band, the Pretenders. This TV SBD recording captures The Clash from the US Festival on opoening day, May 28, 1983, 43 years ago today.  By the way, this set almost didn't happen as The Clash got into a dispute with the local promoters about their fee for the show.  Moreover, it turned out to be the last gig Mick Jones ever played with the band. You can read more about all that here.

I saw The Clash once in August 1982, a concert I've discussed in detail in my book since I almost missed it! In any event, 1982 turned out to be a star crossed year for the Clash. On one hand, the band achieved a new level of commercial success with the singles Rock The Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go. In addition, they received rave reviews for their live shows as the lead-in band for The Who’s “farewell tour”, during which they often times over shadowed the rock veterans. On the other hand, tensions between the band members had the band on the brink of destruction. They would go over the edge in 1983, when Mick Jones left the band, or was fired, depending on what account you read.

This soundboard recording captures 3 songs from The Clash's set at the Concerts for Kampuchea on December 27, 1979, 46 years ago today.

The Clash 1981 - Back To Back - #1: In May and June 1981, The Clash, having recently released the triple album Sandinista!, scheduled 8 concerts at Bond's International Casino in New York City. The site of these shows was the former Bonds department store near Times Square, which had been converted into a large 2nd floor concert hall. Promoters kept the name because there was a large, neon Bonds sign on the outside of the building, which made for great free promotion. The 8 shows were grossly oversold (Bond's held only 1700 people), leading the fire marshals to cancel the Saturday, May 30 performance. In response, the band condemned the promoters for their greed, while demonstrating unprecedented integrity to every ticket holder by more than doubling the original booking, adding 9 more shows for a total of 17. This soundboard capures The Clash diring that legendary tun at Bonds on June 8, 1981, 39 years ago today,. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set,

1980s - #4:  The televison business is notorious for being a copycat industry.  The minute one network has a success, every other one seeks to imitate it. ABC's show Friday's was there unsuccsssful attempt to duplicate what NBC has done with Saturday Night Live. Launched in 1980, Friday's lasted just 2 years (SNL is still running, nearly 50 years after its launch in 1975!) but it did feature some excellent new wave and punk artists as musical guests.  This TV soundboard recording captures The Clash on Fridays on April 25, 1980, 44 years ago today.

1980s - #2:  In May 1982, The Clash released the album Combat Rock, which went to #7 on the Billboard charts in the US. The disc was propelled up the charts by 2 singles, Should I Stay or Should I Go and Rock The Casbah, videos of which received extensive airplay on MTv. The band toured small clubs throughout the summer in support of the disc, then secured a spot as the lead-in for The Who for their “farewell” tour. Many reviewers and concert goers firmly beliverd the punk rockers stole that they he show from the classic rock veterans. Who knew then that it was the beginning of the end? Within a year, Mick Jones had left the band. But, for a few brief moments in 1982, the Clash were on top of the rock world.   This soundbaord recording captures them duriing that hsitorice, yet finak rub, in Boston, on September 7, 1982, 4 decades ago this very day.

The Clash - 1982-02-25 - Hong Kong, China (FM)

1980S -#4: From 1977 to 1980, the Clash released an album every year, including the double album London’s Calling in 1979 and the triple disc, Sandinista, in 1980. Perhaps releasing 5 discs of music in under 24 months took its toll on the band, because in 1981 they only released 3 singles. As 1982 began, therefore, it had been more than a year since the band’s last new album release. Work was underway, however, on their next disc, a single album entitled Combat Rock. Combat Rock would feature 2 of the band’s best-known and best selling singles, Should I Stay or Should I Go and Rock The Casbah. Videos for those 2 songs would garner significant airplay on MTV. Those events were several months in the future, however, when The Clash played Sun Plaza Hall in Hong Kong on February 25, 1982, 39 years ago today, as captured in this Fm broadcast

On November 10, 1978, The Clash released their second album, Give “Em Enough Rope, which rose to #2 on the British charts, cementing the band’s position as leaders of the punk rock movement. In the US, however, commercial reception wasn’t quite as enthusiastic, with the album only climbing to #128 on the Billboard 200 list. American critics, however, lavished the album with praise. For example, both Rolling Stone and Time Magazine named it album of the year. Robert Christgau gave the disc an A, writing that the album conveyed “truths that couldn't be stated more forcefully with any other music.” The record was loud, intense, angry, defiant and politically charged, taking on topics ranging from global terrorism to racial conflict to war to corruption in government. This soundboard recording captures The Clash about 2 months after the release of Give ‘Em Enough Rope at the Lyceum in London on January 3, 1979, 41 years ago today. The Clash - 1979-09-21 - The Palladium, NY (SBD)

1979 - London’s Calling, the album released by the Clash in early 1980 in the US, has taken its place among rock’s masterpieces. Rolling Stone ranked it 8th on its list of the 500 greatest albums of all time and #1 on its list of the best albums of the 1980s. Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ rating, calling it the best double album since Exile on Main Street. London’s Calling was the album that truly made The Clash the only band that matters. The disc is not only renowned for its music, but also for its album cover. That cover, featuring a picture of bassist Paul Simonon smashing his instrument, surrounded by the album title in lettering mirroring that used on the cover of Elvis Presley’s first album, has become a rock icon. Ironically, photographer Pennie Smith didn’t want the shot used because it was slightly out of focus as she was backing up to avoid debris from Simonon’s smashed bass. Fortunately, Joe Strummer insisted that it become the cover shot, and the rest as they say, is history. Smith shot her historic photo on September 21, 1979, 4 decades ago today, during a Clash concert at the Palladium in New York City. The Clash - 1981-06-04 - Bonds, NY (SBD)

In May and June 1981, The Clash, having recently released the triple album Sandinista!, scheduled 8 concerts at Bond's International Casino in New York City. This soundboard, from one of the added dates, June 4, 1981, 37 years ago today, captures The Clash on the cusp between being a cult punk band and attaining rock stardom. Download it and relive a pivotal moment in the band's history.

• December 26: Queen

• December 28: The Specials, The Pretenders and The Who

The Clash - 1979-02-13 -  Cleveland, OH (SBD)

This soundboard recording captures The Clash a few months after the release of Give ‘Em Enough Rope in Cleveland on February 13, 1979, 37 years ago today. Download this one to hear The Clash at their early, snarling best, just a year before they would take the world by storm with the classic double album, London Calling.

The Clash -1982-10-29 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD)

In May 1982, The Clash released the album Combat Rock, which went to #7 on the Billboard charts in the US. On many of those dates, reviewers made it clear that they believed that The Clash upstaged the headliners! This soundboard recording captures The Clash on October 29, 1982, 33 years ago today, leading in for The Who in Los Angeles. Download this one to hear The Clash at what was, ironically, both the peak of their popularity and the beginning of the end, as they would soon disintegrate due to growing conflicts between the band members.
