1970s - #2: When Elvis Costello burst on the scene in the late 1970’s, he quickly took his place as one of the 3 Angry Men of rock, along with Graham Parker and Joe Jackson. His first 2 albums, My Aim Is True and This Year’s Model, may be one of the best 1, 2 punches ever thrown by a new artist. Both albums, which were produced by Nick Lowe of Rockpile fame, cracked the top 40 on the Billboard album charts, and received wisespread critical praise. In 2003, Rolling Stone included My Aim is True and This Year’s Model in their list of the Top 500 albums of all time, with the former ranked #168 and the latter at #98. Elvis toured relentlessly in early 1978 in support of both albums, for the most part playing small clubs and college campuses. This FM broadcast captures him in Toronto on March 6, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 2001-12-08 - Asbury Park, NJ (SBD)

I've attended 9 Springsteen concerts, in 4 different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, & 2000's) with 2 different backing bands (the E-Streeters and those other guys he played with in the 1990s, whoever they were!). On top of that, I've seen Bruce twice in the same year 3 times - 1978, 1992 and 2003! The other 3 shows I attended were in 1984, 1984, and 1988. If that's not enough, I saw Bruce in a 5th decade, the 2010s, when he, along with Miami Steve, were special guests of Paul McCartney on September 15, 2017 at Madison Square Garden. They played I Saw her Standing There, and when the crowd wouldn't stop screaming when it was over, Macca did the only thing he could do - count them down into a 2nd rendition of the same song. Yep back to back versions of I Saw her Standing There featuring Sir Paul, Bruce and Miami Steve. Then 3 years ago, I saw Springsteen in a 6th decade, on June 16, 2022 as he was once again a guest of Macca's. Bruce played Glory Days, with Macca on backing viocals, then the 2 of them dueted on the Beatles' tune, I Wanna Be Your Man. Bruce also came back during the closing Abbey Road medley to add some guitar work! So, that's 11 dufferent times I've seen Springsteen take the stage.

In Dcember 2001, Bruce Springsteen played 5 concerts in Asbury Park, billed on the marquee as “Bruce Springsteen with the Max Weinberg 7 and Friends – A Holiday Show".  This soundboard recording captures the last of the 5 nights, on December 8, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. The lucky ones who got tickets for the show were treated to a Springsteen concert unlike any other. Bruce's take on holiday tunes, such Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and Merry Christmas Baby, were paired with long lost favorites, such Thundercrack. E Street band members Max Weinberg, Nils Lofgren and Patti Scialfa each got to step out front on several tunes. Friends Elvis costello, Bruce Hornsby and Garland Jeffreys joined in the fun, Another of Bruce’s friends, Southside Johnny, expressed the feelings of everyone in attendance when he led the band through his classic tune, I Don’t Want To Go Home. This one is a holiday treat!

Elvis Costello - 1984-08-11 - Philadelphia, PA (FM)

In the late 1970s, Rock & Roll Garage asked Jerry Garcia for his opinion about the tune Watching The Detectives.  His response - “I like it. I like Elvis Costello”.  Turns out the punk rocker also liked the Dead, especially Jerry Garcia!  On May 7, 1972, during the Dead's legendary Europe 72 tour, Costello, all of 18 at the time, was in the crowd when they performed at the Bickershaw Festival. Years later, the ever versatile Mr. Costello was one of the artists who participated in the Deadicated tribute album in 1991, performing a cover of the Garcia/Hunter composition Ship of Fools. He later covered another Garcia/Hunter tune, It Must Have Been The Roses on a 2nd tribute album entitled Stolen Roses. In addition to those 2 tracks, Costello has also played 3 more Garcia/Hunter songs, Friend of the Devil, Ripple, and Tennessee Jed in concert. In 1989, Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir joined Costello for a jam session at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley CA (posted here on So Mnay Roads). It was so spontaneous that Jerry had to borrow Costello's guitar! Elvis has continued his relationship with the Grateful Dead even after Jerry's passing - he joined Further on stage in on March 27, 2001, at a show in New York. where he sang vocals on three "Jerry tunes" - Friend of the Devil, Ship of Fools, and Ripple - while wife Diana Krall sat in on keyboards!  In 2022, in honor of Jerry's 80th birthday,Costello played several shows where he performed tunes from the Garcia/Hunter catalog.

When Bob Geldorf organized an effort in late 1984 to recruit an all star cast of rock stars to record a charity single to raise money to address the famine in Ethiopia, he had little idea what idea would eventually transpire. Band Aid's recording of Do They Know Its Christmas would eventually evolve into one of the largest charity initiatives in history, the world wide concert held on July 13, 1985, 4 decades ago today, known as Live Aid. Billed as the "global jukebox", the Live Aid festival was held simultaneously in Wembley Stadium in London, with 72,000 in attendance, and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia,, with a crowd of about 100,000 people. On the same day, concerts inspired by the initiative were also held in other countries, such as Australia and Germany . It was one of the largest satellite link-ups and television broadcasts of all time, as estimated global audience of 1.9 billion, across 150 nations, watched Live Aid. Over 50 different rock artists performed for over 16 hours between the 2 concerts at Wembley and Philadelphia, making it one of the largest and longest single day rock festivals in history. Most importantly, the effort raised over $283 million for famine relief. Go here for even more details on Live Aid!

After years of searching, I finally found a complete FM recording of the entire show, from July 13, 1985, 40 years ago today, which had originally been broadcast on the BBC and ABC radio networks, as well as televised on MTV and ABC. We're presenting it today in 3 posts, which encompass over 15 cds worth of music. The posts run in chronological order, from the opening notes at Wembley to the closing song at JFK. Normally, I post the entire set list, but the song list is so long for this show, that it won't fit in the post. So I just listed all the artists and you can find the set lists on the artwork. This post features the early portion of the show, including such artists as Status Quo, Joan Baez, Elvis Costello, The Four Tops, Black Sabbath (with Ozzy!), Sting and Phil Collins, who would be the only artist to play on both sides of the Atlantic at Live Aid. Also featured are musicians from Australia, Japan, Austria, and Yugoslavia. Live Aid may have been the first true multi-national rock festival, with performers from all across the globe, and from countless musical genres, uniting for one common cause. Elvis Costello - 1980-07-12 - Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland (SBD)

While Elvis Costello was one of the 3 Angry Young Men of the new wave era (along with Joe Jackson and Graham Parker). Over time though, all he (and his 2 compatriots) moved away from that persona, diversifying his musical style. Costello’s 4th studio album, Get Happy, released in February 1980, was one of his ventures in a new direction. The songs on the album were influenced by both R&B and Soul music. In addition, the title may be a reference to gospel music, where the phrase "getting happy" is synonymous with receiving the Holy Spirit. Some sources claim that the R&B and Soul flavor of the disc was Costello’s way of making amends for racist comments he had made about James Brown and Ray Charles in a Febuary 1979 argument with Stephen Stills and Bonnie Bramlet, comments that Bramlet had reported to the US news media. Costello denied that was his motivation, though it does seem like more than simply a coincidence. In any event, despite the change in style, the album went to #11 on the Billboard charts, just one slot lower than Costello’s previous disc, Armed Forces. This FM soundboard recording captures Costello on tour in support of Get Happy, at the Montreux Jazz Festival on Juky 12, 1980, 45 years ago today.

To promote the album Costello hit the road full force, not only playing concerts but also also making TV appearances, playing live on several morning radio programs and even playing several "secret" unannounced gigs. Attractions' pianist Steve Nieve backed Costello for the tour.  This FM broadcast captures Elvis during that run, in Chicago on May 18, 1996, 29 years ago today.

1999: In late 1996, Elvis Costello broke up his long time band The Attractions due to tensions between himself and bassist Bruce Thomas. He spent time over the next two years working in collaboration with Burt Bacharach. Costello had long been a fan of Bacharach, and even recorded his song, I'll Never Fall In Love Again, for the 2nd Austin Powers movie. The duo released the album Painted From Memory in 1998, and even played a limited series of intimate live performances in support of the disc. After concluding the shows with Bacharach, Costello decided to continue to play a similar style of concert, and recruited long time keyboardist, Steve Nieve to accompany him on tour. The two embarked on The Lonely World Tour in early 1999. This soundboard recording captures Costello and Nieve during that tour, in Newcastle, on November 12, 1999, a quarter century ago today.

2020s - #2:  On September 30, 2022, Elvis Costello played a concert at the Grest American Music Hall in San Francisco dedicated to the memory of Jerry Garcia, who would have turned 80 on August 1 of that year.  The next night at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass festival on October 1, 2002, 2 years ago today, Costello continued his tribute to the late Grateful Dead guitarist, as captured in thsi webcast recording. Costello's set included 4 Garcia-Hunter tunes - Brown Eyed Women, Loser, Ramble On Rose, and Sugaree.

Elvis Costello 1996 - Back To Back - #1: In May 1996, Elvis Costello released his 17th studio album, entitled All This Useless Beauty, which was his final disc with his long time backing band, The Attractions. To promote the album Costello hit the road full force, not only playing concerts but also also making TV appearances, playing live on several morning radio programs and even playing several "secret" unannounced gigs. Attractions' pianist Steve Nieve backed Costello for the tour.  This FM broadcast captures Elvis during that run, in Boston on May 20, 1996, 28 years ago today. 2000s - #6: In April 2002, Elvis Costello released his 19th studio album, entitled When I Was Cruel The disc climbed all the way to #20 on the Billboard album charts. The disc also was the first to showcase Costello's new backing band, The Impostors. This FM broadcast captures Elvis and The Impostors at the BBC Studios playing a set to promote new album, on April 28, 2002, 22 years ago today.

2003 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2003-03-10 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2003 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction ceremony was a celebration of the punk/new wave era as The Police, Elvis Costello and The Clash were all inducted. Both Costello and The Police took the stage, but The Clash did not, as founding member Joe Strummer had passed away just a few months prior. For The Police, it was their first performance together since 1992.
