I've seen Robert Cray in concert twice, both times in 1987. The first time, in April, he led-in for Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden. Then I saw Cray again in August 1987 at Pier 84 in New York. He was the headline act with John Hiatt as his lead in. It was a fitting pairing since just as Hiatt had his commercial breakthrough that year, so did Cray. His album Strong Persuader, released in late 1986, climbed into the top 15 on the Billboard charts in 1987. This FM broadcast captures Cray in West Virginia on August 23, 1999, 27 years ago today.

I've seen Robert Cray in concert twice, both times in 1987. The first time, in April, he led-in for Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden. Then I saw Cray again in August 1987 at Pier 84 in New York. He was the headline act with John Hiatt as his lead in. It was a fitting pairing since just as Hiatt had his commercial breakthrough that year, so did Cray. His album Strong Persuader, released in late 1986, climbed into the top 15 on the Billboard charts in 1987. 

This soundboard recording captures Cray 7 years after I saw him live, leading in for Santana in Arizona on June 3, 1994, 32 years ago today.

Here's our 2nd post, containing parts 3 and 4 of the Crossroads Festival from July 28, 2007, 18 years ago today, featuring guitar gods Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph, Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, Hubert Sumlin,  Sumlinand the one and only BB King!  Trucks was truly one of the standouts of the day, playing a blistering version of Derek and the Dominos' Anyday with wife Susan Tedeschi.  BB King, 81 years young at the time, almost brought EC to tears during this set!  Enjoy and come back later for more from this amazing show.

After a highly successful tour in 1985, including a triumphant appearance at Live Aid, Eric Clapton took most of 1986 off. The few shows he did play, however, featured a brand new band. Whereas in 1985, 6 or 7 band members backed EC, the 1986 group featured only 3 other musicians - Nathan East on bass, Greg Phillinganes on keyboards and Phil Collins on Drums. Collins also served as the producer for Clapton’s latest album August, which he released on November 24, 1986. This sounboard recording features EC's new 4 piece band, at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, on July 10, 1986, 39 years ago today.

As mentioned in our Van Morrison post, today we have one of over a dozen posts from now to the end of the month featuring performances from the Glastonbury Festival. This FM broadcast captures Robert Cray at Glastonbury on June 19, 1987, 38 years ago today. That year, Cray, who had been working in the music business since 1977, became an “overnight success”, which of course, was a misnomer if there ever was one. In November 1986, he had released the album Strong Persuader, wich climbed to #13 on the Billboard charts, and earned Cray a Grammy. The single from the disc, Smoking Gun, went to #22 on the charts and brought Cray’s music to a wider audience.  So did his appearance at Glastonbury in front of a crowd of over 60,000!

The 1991 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremony took place just as the Persian Gulf War started, putting a damper on the evening's festivties. Perhaps then, it was fitting that The Byrds, including David Crosby, reunited that night for their induction, singing 3 songs including Turn, Turn Tiu, Turn, with its so appropriate line, "a time for peace, I swear its not too late."

1980s - #4: In 1977, Robert Cray formed his first band, with the hopes of building a career to match his musical influences Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters. The next year, he appeared in the movie, National Lampoon's Animal House as an uncredited bassist in the house party band Otis Day and the Knights. In 1982, he earned his first record contract and began to develop a reputation as a strong live performer. Then in November 1986, he released the album Strong Persuader, and became an “overnight successes”, which of course, was a misnomer if there ever was one. The album climbed to #13 on the Billboard charts, and earned Cray a Grammy. The single from the disc, Smoking Gun, went to #22 on the charts and brought Cray’s music to a wider audience. This soundboard recording captures him early on in his climb to stardom, at the Keystone in Palo Alto on January 14, 1980, 43 years ago today.

2006: In August 2005, Eric Clapton released the album Back Home, his first disc of original material since Reptile in 2001. EC recruited a host of old friends in making the album, including Steve Winwood, Billy Preston, Robert Randolph, Doyle Bramhall II and Nathan East. The album climbed to #13 on the billboard charts and included a cover of George Harrison’s Love Comes to Everyone, which EC recorded as a tribute to his dear, departed friend. As Clapton was occupied in 2005 with the US and UK Cream reunion shows, he did launch the Back Home tour until the following year. Interestingly, despite the tour taking its name form the recent album, few songs from the disc were featured in the live performances. Rather, EC, backed by Bramhall II and Derek Trucks on guitar, focused on material from his days with Derek and The Dominos. This soundboard recording capture Eric Clapton in Italy on July 7, 2006, 15 years ago today, features a special guest appearance by Robert Cray, who was leading in for Clapton on this tour, on Old Love.

In February o f that year, he released he released King Of America, an acoustic guitar driven album, produced by T-Bone Burnett, that had a country and folk rock flavor. Then in September, he released Blood and Chocolate, a disc which reunited him with producer Nick Lowe, who had been at the helm for Costello’s first 5 albums. This BBC broadcast captures Elvis in between the rlease of those 2 discs, at the Werchter Festival on Jul5, 1986, 35 years ago today.

Eric Clapton - 1990 - #1: In 1987, Eric Clapton opened the year with a series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London. That tradition would last for another 9 years, until 1996. Over that decade, EC played countless memorable shows at the RAH.  Highlights from the 1990 and 1991 runs were captured on the live album 24 Nights. While 24 Nights is a wonderful album, I’ve never been a big fan of live discs that pick and choose songs from different nights on the tour. Every concert has its own unique feel and rhythm and live compilation albums can never capture that energy or emotion. That’s why we all love bootlegs, because we get to hear the show exactly as it happened, spectacular moments, unexpected surprises and even outright flubs. In that vein, this soundboard recording captured Slowhand at the RAH on February 3, 1990, 3 decades ago this very day.  This is the first of 3 consecutive nights featuring EC playing the blues (That year, in addition to Blues Nights, EC played some shows with his standard 4 piece band and others backed by a full orchestra!)  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Same Tour, Different Show set.

SPAIN - From October 16 to 20, Seveille Spain played host to the Guitar Legends Concert, a 5 night music extravaganza designed to promote interest in Expo 92, which was to be held in Seville in April of the following year. Each night of the run had a different theme, and 27 legendary guitarists made appearances.  Today we have an FM Broadcast of part of night 1 of the Guitar Legends Concert, which was dubbed Blues Ni-gt, from October 15, 1991, 28 years ago today. Robert Cray - 1987-01-21 - Dallas TX (FM) 

1980s - #4: In 1977, Robert Cray formed his first band, with hopes of building a career to match his musical influences Albert Collins, Freddie King and Muddy Waters. The next year, he appeared in the movie, National Lampoon's Animal House as an uncredited bassist in the house party band Otis Day and the Knights. In 1982, he earned his first record contract and began to develop a reputation as a strong live performer. Then in November 1986, he released the album Strong Persuader, and became an “overnight successes”, which of course, was a misnomer if there ever was one. The album climbed to #13 on the Billboard charts, and earned Cray a Grammy. The single from the disc, Smoking Gun, went to #22 on the charts and brought Cray’s music to a wider audience. This FM broadcast captures Cray on tour in support of Strong Persuader in Dallas on January 21, 1987, 32 years ago today. Cray gets a little help from another blues legend for the final 3 songs, the late great Stevie Ray Vaughan!

Here's our 2nd post, containing parts 3 and 4 of the Crossroads Festival from July 28, 2007, 20 years ago today, featuring guitar gods Derek Trucks, Robert Randolph, Robert Cray, Jimmie Vaughan, Hubert Sumlin,  Sumlinand the one and only BB King!  Trucks was truly one of the standouts of the day, playing a blistering version of Derek and the Dominos' Anyday with wife Susan Tedeschi.  BB King, 81 years young at the time, almost brought EC to tears during this set!  Enjoy and come back later for more from this amazing show.
