here's our 2nd post today, this one highlighting our other featured city this month, San Francisco. One of the reasons I love to collect live bootleg recordings of my favorite bands is that the best ones – soundboards, FM broadcasts and top notch audience tapes – are so much better than most officially released live albums. In most cases, the official live discs make all of the following mistakes:

• adding overdubs and/or editing songs
• mixing songs from multiple shows to create an “ideal” set list
• not including all the songs played at a particular show

The result is that the “live” album really isn’t live at all. Rather, it’s the record company’s version of reality, it’s what they think you want to hear, rather than what was really played. Those of us who love attending concerts, however, know that part of the beauty of a live event is that it isn’t sanitized. Playing live is filled with opportunities for transcendent, once in a lifetime performances as well as with chances for spectacular failures. I’ve seen both, and while I prefer the former, I know you don’t get those magic nights unless the band is willing to risk the latter. One official release that does get it right is Neil Young’s Live At Massey Hall, which captures the 2nd of his two shows on January 19, 1971 in Toronto. The disc includes every tune in the set list, in the correct order, with all of Neil’s between song chatter. As you listen, you feel as if you were at the show as it happened. Of course, the record company couldn’t leave well enough alone, so the accompanying DVD uses footage from a concert in Connecticut with the Toronto audio overdubbed! In any event, the performance at Massey Hall is so good it leaves you wanting more. Fortunately, we have this excellent audience recording from just 2 weeks later, from Berkeley, CA, in the San Francisco bay area, on January 31, 1971, 41 years ago today. The tape includes both shows from that night, with no record company meddling. Download this one to catch Neil on tour between the release of 2 of his most memorable albums, 1970’s After The Goldrush and 1972’s Harvest.

Elvis Presley - 1973-01-29 - Las Vegas NV (early) (SBD)

While today, Howard Stern has crowned himself King Of All Media, back in early 1973 that title belonged to Elvis. In late 1972, his single Burning Love reached #2 on The Billboard charts, and #1 on the Cashbox Top 40 list. The tune would be Elvis's 40th and final Top 40 hit. On January 28, 1973, MGM's film, Elvis On Tour, won a Golden Globe Award for best documentary. Two weeks prior to that, on January 14, Elvis has played a concert from Hawaii which was broadcast around the world via satellite to an audience of over 1 billion people. Ironically, the show was not broadcast live in the US as it conflicted with the Super Bowl. American audiences had to wait until April to see the concert. RCA released a live album entitled Aloha From Hawaii Via Satellite, which captured the concert in its entirety. The disc climbed all the way to #1 on the Billboard charts. So, as Elvis took the stage on January 29, 1973, 39 years ago today in Las Vegas, as captured in this soundboard recording, he clearly was on top of the world. It would be all downhill for the King, however, from that point until his death in 1977.

Linda Ronstadt - 1975-01-29 - Hempstead, NY (SBD)

In November 1974, Linda Ronstadt released the album Heart Like A Wheel, produced in collaboration with Peter Asher and Andrew Gold. The result, a more refined and streamlined mix of Country and Rock than her previous releases, proved to be Ronstadt's commercial breakthrough. The disc would become Ronstadt’s first number 1 album on the Billboard charts, reaching that perch the same week in February 1975 that her single, You’re No Good, did the same! Within weeks of that event, Rolling Stone would feature Linda on the cover for the very first time. The album would eventually spend 51 weeks on the charts, and Billboard would name Ronstadt as their Female Pop Artist of the Year! After years of critical acclaim, Ronstadt had become an “overnight sensation". She would reign for the rest of the decade and well into the 80’s as the Queen of Rock. This soundboard recording captures Linda on January 29, 1975, 37 years ago today, at the Calderone Concert Hall, right as Heart Like a Wheel and You’re No Good were making their climb to the top of the charts. When the Grateful Dead played their "farewell show" on October 20, 1974 (which fortunately turned out to be just a 19 month break from touring and not a complete retirement), Deadheads wondered what they would be for live music.  Well the Jerry Garcia Band stepped into the void, playing 115 concerts in 1975 and then another 80 in 1976! This soundboard catches them at one of Jerry’s favorite venues, the Keystone in Berkeley, CA on January 28, 1976, 3 dozen years ago today. By the way, backing Garcia in addition to long time JGB bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt, were 2 other members of the Grateful Dead, Keith & Donna Jean Godchaux. And just about 5 months after this show, the Grateful Dead would resume touring, so Deadheads in attendance  didn't have long to wait to hear their beloved band once again.

Elvis Presley – 1972-01-26 – Las Vegas (SBD)

On July 31, 1969, Elvis Presley took the stage at The Las Vegas International Hotel (later the Las Vegas Hilton) for the first of a 4-week, 57 show engagement. He received a standing ovation from the crowd of 2200 before he even sang a note. This series of shows broke every existing Las Vegas attendance record and received rave reviews from fans and critics. Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’ manager, quickly negotiated a contract for his star client to play the International every February and August for the next 5 years, at a salary of $1 million per year! This soundboard, from January 26, 1972, 4 decades ago today, captures Elvis on the opening night of his 3rd winter engagement as part of that deal. The King is in fine form playing a great mix of his early classics, recent hits, gospel tunes and cover songs. What no one knew at the time, however, was that in less than a month, on February 23, 1972, he and his wife Priscilla would officially separate. On November 16, 1977, Stephen Spielberg released the now legendary movie, Close Encounters of The Third Kind. The film, which tells the story of Roy Neary, an everyday blue collar worker in Indiana, whose life changes after an encounter with a UFO, would be nominated for 8 Academy Awards and gross over $300 million in ticket sales. The movie’s 5 tone musical motif which was used by the aliens to communicate with humans, became ingrained in popular culture. No better example is this soundboard recording of the Grateful Dead’s concert in Eugene Or on January 22, 1978, 34 years ago today. As the Dead segue out of the Other One, they launch into “Space” with none other than the 5 notes from Close Encounters! Quite appropriate, to say the least. No wonder this one shows up as one of Deadbase’s top 5 shows from 1978! One note - the first 4 songs of set 2 are from an audience source. No soundboard is available for those tunes.  One other note - the mountain shown on the artwork is Devil's Tower, which is in Wyoming not Oregon.  Why use a landmark from another state? The reason is simple -  Devil's Tower is the site of the alien landing in Close Encounters!

Jerry Garcia  with Merl Saunders - 1973-01-19 - Berkeley, CA (SBD)

From 1971 to 1975, Jerry Garcia, when not playing with the Grateful Dead Dead, often found himself collaborating with keyboardist Merle Saunders. In fact, the two released a live album together, entitled Live At The Keystone, featuring tracks from their concerts at that venue in Berkeley on July 10 and 11, 1973. This soundboard recording finds the duo at the same club, just 6 months earlier, on January 19, 1973, 39 years ago today. As always when Garcia and Saunders teamed up, unexpected song choices abounded, such as their covers of Dancin' in the Moonlight from the band King Harvest and Expresssway to Your Heart from The Soul Survivors, just to name two. By the way, we’ll have more from Garcia from The Keystone in Berkeley later this month, as it was clearly one of his favorite places to play live.

Allman Brothers Band - 1971-01-17 - Pittsburgh, PA (SBD)

As 1971 began, the Allman Brothers Band was riding a wave of critical success. Their 2nd album, Idlewild South, released in late 1970, had received a strong review from Rolling Stone magazine. The band’s best work, however, was still to come. The Allmans played 2 shows at the Fillmore East on March 12 and 13, which would be recorded and then released as a live album in July of that year. The resulting 2 disc set, simply entitled At Fillmore East, is often called the finest live album ever produced. Rolling Stone ranked it 49th on its list of the greatest albums in rock history. That album sealed the Allman’s reputation as one of rock’s most innovative, exciting and powerful live acts. While the Fillmore shows get the attention thanks to the historic album that documented them, the truth is that on almost every night in 1971, The Allmans, with Duane leading the way, were on fire. This soundboard recording from Pittsburgh on January 17, 1971, 41 years ago this very day, is no exception. The Byrds - 1972-01-16 - London, UK (SBD)

In early 1972, The Byrds played 4 shows in Europe, 2 in Paris and 2 in London. It would be the last time the band would play overseas prior to their break up in 1973. While the line up of Roger McGuinn, Clarence White, Skip Battin and Gene Parsons continued to shine on stage, their fortunes in the studios were in decline. Neither of their 1971 albums, Byrdmaniax nor Farther Along, had fared well on the charts in either the US or the UK. Critical reviews of both albums were often times scathing. For example, Richard Green of the NME wrote "When the true history of rock comes to be written, The Byrds will get a deserved place of honour on the strength of tunes like Mr. Tambourine Man, Eight Miles High, and So You Want to Be a Rock 'n' Roll Star. Hopefully the writer will not have listened to Byrdmaniax or he may drastically alter his opinion."  Eventually, the studio failures took their toll on the Byrds. Gene Parsons would be dismissed from the band in July 1972. , Roger McGuinn would cancel all touring after February 1973.  An attempt to reunite the original 5 Byrds stalled when their album of new material was met with poor reviews. In July 1973, Clarence White was tragically killed by a drunk driver. That same month, McGuinn released a solo album, effectively putting an end to The Byrds. Download this soundboard recording from January 16, 1972, 4 decades ago today, therefore, to hear Te Byrds' last hurrah before the band faded into rock history.

Bruce Springsteen - 1970-01-13 - San Francisco (SBD)

Long before there was an E Street Band, there was Steel Mill. One of Bruce Springsteen’s early bands, Steel Mill, featured Danny Federici, Vini Lopez, and Vini Roslin (Robbin Thompson didn't join the band until they returned to New Jersey the following month.) This soundboard recording captures Steel Mill on January 13, 1970, 42 years ago today, at The Matrix in San Francisco. Boz Scaggs was the scheduled headliner, but he cancelled at that last minute due to illness, so Steel Mill played alone. Critic Philip Elwood, attended the concert, intending to review Scaggs but ended up writing a glowing piece about Steel Mill that appeared in the next day’s edition of The San Francisco Examiner. Elwood wrote "I have never been so overwhelmed by a totally unknown talent.” To emphasize just how unknown Springsteen and Steel Mill were, he also noted that few people were in attendance that night. In addition, some sources indicate the band was paid $5 in total for the show, which they split 4 ways! The show includes, He's Guilty, 1 of 3 songs that the band recorded for Bill Graham later that month. (The Train Song and Goin' Back to Georgia were the other two.). After the studio session, Graham offered the band a $1,000 recording contract. They declined!  That said, it's clear that even in the early days, critics and promoters alike could sense that Bruce might be destined for greatness! Download this one and see for yourself!

I'd be willing to bet that most readers of So Many Roads spent their 26th birthday at their favorite bar or pub, surrounded by friends with great rock and roll playing in the background.  Jimmy Page spent his 26th birthday, however, just a tad bit differently. He was on stage with Led Zeppelin, at the Royal Albert Hall  which in his words was "at the time, the largest and most prestigious gig in London". Led Zep's RAH concert on January 9. 1970. 42 years ago today. was the 3rd night of their 8 show UK winter tour. These were the band's first shows in their home country since the release of Led Zeppelin II back in October 1969. That album, which featured such classics as Whole Lotta Love, Heartbreaker, and Ramble On, just to name 3, went to number 1 in both the UK and the US. Download this soundboard recording and play it loud in honor of Jimmy's 68th birthday.

Although they were the leaders of the NY punk scene, the Ramones were often criticized for “knowing only 3 chords and having every song sound the same. Those critics missed the point – The Ramones marked a return to a more pure brand of rock and roll, stripping away all the excess that had plagued the rock scene in the mid 1970s. This FM broadcast, from January 7, 1978, 34 years ago today, captures the band in front of their hometown crowd at the Palladium in New York. The show took place less than a week after their historic performance on New Year’s Eve at The Rainbow Theatre in London, a show that was immortalized on the album It’s Alive. This Palladium show has an identical set list to the Rainbow Theater performance, 27 songs all performed in less than 1 hour! That’s a blistering pace, even for the Ramones as the masters of the 2-minute song! Download this one to catch the Ramones at the top of their game as the leading lights of the punk and new wave revolution.

Kris Kristoffersen - 1979-01-05 - Bottom Line, NY NY (FM)

During his legendary career, Kris Kristofferson could frequently be found on stage at the also legendary night club, the Bottom Line in New York.  He played the venue in January 1979, March 1986, May 1986, May 1987, June 1988, January 1989, February 1990, March 1991, July 1991, August 1992, August 1993, February 1994 and September 1995.  The February 1994 show, which also featured Lou reed, saw DJ Vin Scelsa interview the duo about their careers, in between performances of their most famous tunes. That show was officially released in 2017on the disc, In Their Own Words With Vin Scelsa. This FM broadcast goes back to Kristofferson';s first run at the Bottom Line, on January 5, 1979, 33 years ago today.

He had another in 1967 with Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon, but his big breakthrough came in 1969 when both Sweet Caroline and Holly Holy and cracked the top 10. He followed that in 1970 with his first #1 single, Cracklin' Rosie. This soundboard recording of his performance in London on January 3, 1971, 412 years ago today, finds him riding that wave of success, and previewing what was too come. The penultimate song in his set was I Am I said, which would reach the #4 spot on the Billboard charts by spring of 1971!

Grateful Dead - 1972-01-02 - San Francisco, CA (SBD) 

For the Grateful Dead, the year 1972 would be a transitional one, marked by some incredible high points but marred by sadness. The band would integrate new keyboardist Keith Godchaux (who joined in late 1971) and his wife, vocalist Donna Jean, into the band.  The Dead would travel to Europe, a legendary venture originally marked by the triple album, Europe 72, and later commemorated by the official release of every show from that tour. On August 27, 1972, the band would play a show at Veneta, OR which Deadheads rank along with the May 8, 1977 Cornell show as one for the ages. Alcohol abuse finally caught up with founding member and organist Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, who played his last show with the band on July 17, 1972, and eventually passed away in March 1973, another rocker whose lifestyle cost him his life at age 27.  With Pigpen departing the band, the Dead lost some of their bluesy roots. The band began experimenting with some jazz influenced material, as evident on the album Wake of the Flood released the following year. As many of you know, 1973 and 1974 are often considered (along with 1977) as the Dead's peak, but 1972 set the stage. The soundboard recording captures the first show of that year, from our featured city of San Francisco on January 2, 1972, 4  decadess ago today. Allman Brothers Band - 1974-01-01 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

A few years ago, we posted the Allman Brother Band legendary New Year's Eve show from the Cow Palace in San Francisco on December 31, 1973.  At that concert, Jerry Garcia, Bill Kreutzman and Boz Skaggs joined the Allmans about halfway through the 2nd set, helping create an incredible night of music to ring in the new year.  incredibly, the Allmans were also scheduled for a show on January 1, 1974, 38 years ago today.  This show proceeds at a slightly slower pace than New Year's Eve, perhaps reflecting the band's  need to relax and recover just a bit.  As the show winds down, though, the band ramps it up, especially when joined for the final few numbers by Elvin Bishop, John Lee Hooker, Charlie Daniels, Steve Miller  and Buddy Miles. Something New For 2012 At So Many Roads - Monthly Theme

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and a happy new year! As we enter 2012, we're going to try to introduce a new feature here at So Many Roads to Ease My Soul. Each month, we'll try to have a theme for our posts. We're not abandoning our 'this date in history approach", but rather adding to it! For example, we may focus on a particular artist one month, and have several posts from them throughout the month. Or maybe we'll highlight a particular style of music, or a specific venue. I'm still refining this concept, and don't have all the details completely worked out yet. It's an experiment and we'll see how it works. In any event, for January, we'll be featuring the music of The 1970s!
