Beach Boys 1966 - Back To Back - #1: In May 1966, The Beach Boys released the album Pet Sounds, which would eventually climb to #10 on the Billboard charts.  The disc was in many ways a Brian Wilson solo album, almost entirely written, composed arranged and produced the the group's leader.  A departure from the surf and cars on the band was know for, the disc represented Wilson's first attempt at creating the greatest rock album ever made.  The disc also sparked dissension in the band, as members questioned everything from the sound and the lyrics of the album, as well as the direction Brian was setting for the band.  It was a foreshadowing of what was to come to following year, when Brian began recording Smile, the album which would almost destroy the band and would drive him to have a nervous breakdown. Despite the internal disagreements over the disc, Pet Sounds was a critical and commercial success for the band. Rolling Stone ranked the album at #2 on its listof the 500 greatest albums of all time.  Two singles from the album cracked the top 10 - Sloop John B at #3 and Wouldn't It Be Nice at #8, while God Only Knows charted in the top 40.  In addition, Good Vibrations, recorded during the Pet Sounds sessions but released as a stand alone single on October 18, 1966, climbed all the way to #1. The Airplane 1966 - Back To Back - #1: It’s hard to think about the Jefferson Airplane with out visualizing Grace Slick out front of the band, the strong female lead singer embodying the new freedoms women were seeking as a cultural revolution swept across the US in the late 1960s. Grace’s powerful voice helped propel songs such as White Rabbit and Somebody To Love into the Billboard Top 10. Yet, before Grace, there was Singe. Signe Toly Anderson, the original female vocalist of the Jefferson Airplane. Signe left the band in October 1966, a few months after the birth of her daughter. Her last show was October 16. Jefferson Airplane - 1966-10-16 - San Francisco CA (early & late) (SBD)

1960s - #3: In late 1966, the Jefferson Airplane recruited Grace Slick, and the rest, as they say, was history. Over the course of the next 6 months, the Airplane took center stage as one of the leading bands of the new psychedelic rock movement that emerged from San Francisco. Their breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, produced by the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia, and released in February 1967, spawned two huge hits, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit, both powered by Grace's vocals. The Airplane played at the Human Be-In in January and then at the Monterrey Pop Festival in June, helping inaugurate the Summer of Love, in which thousands of young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. This soundboard recording captures when it all started, Graces's first night with the Airplane, on October 16, 1966, 58 years ago today.

Rolling Stones - 1966-07-28 - Honolulu, Hawaii (SBD) 

1960s - #6: In April 1966, the Rolling Stones released teh album Aftermath, their frst disc composed entirely of  original compositions written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards.  The album went to #2 on the US Billboard charts and spawned the #1 single, Paint It Black. Interestingly, the UK version of the disc included Mother's Little Helper in place of Paint It Black. The Stones launched a US Tour on June 24 in support of Aftermath. This soundboard recording captures the band in Hawaii on the last night of the tour, on July 28, 1966, 57 years ago this very day!

Grateful Dead - 1966-01-08 - San Francisco CA (SBD)

An excerpt from my book, Ten Rules of the Road I Learned At My First Concert, provides the perfect context for today's post: "In case you are wondering why Deadheads often use the phrase “got on the bus” to describe becoming fans of the band, it stems from the Dead’s association with Ken Kesey in the 1960s. Kesey, the author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Sometime A Great Notion, began experimenting with psychedelic drugs around 1962. In 1964, he and a group of friends, called the Merry Pranksters, traveled across the United States in a psychedelic painted school bus named Furthur, handing out LSD along the way. Those who “got on the bus” and travelled with Kesey were looking to challenge the established cultural norms of the day. The bus was driven by Neal Cassady, who became the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's classic novel, On the Road. Furthur and Cassady are both referenced in the Dead’s song “The Other One”, in the line "Captain Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never Never Land". The Dead also served as the house band for Kesey’s Acid Tests, in other words LSD parties, in San Francisco in the late 1960s. The saga of Kesey and The Merry Pranksters is documented in Tom Wolfe’s critically acclaimed book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test." In 1967, Simon & Garfunkel maintained a low profile, spending most of their time in the studio recording the album Bookends, which would not be released until 1968. They released 2 singles that year, At The Zoo and Fakin' It, which went to #16 and #23, respectively, on the Billboard charts. Both would later be included on Bookends. The one major event in 1967 for the duo was their appearance at the Monterery Pop Festival on June 16, where they closed the first night of the 3 day event. This soundboard recording captures Simon & Garfunkel about a year earlier, on France on June 26, 1966, 56 years ago today.

The Beatles - 1966-06-24 - Munich, Germany (SBD)

The Beatles ruling the Summer of Love in 1967 was a direct result of two major events in 1966.  The first was the release of the album Revolver in August 1966.  That disc, which many critics feel is finest work ever produced by the Fab Four, started the process of making albums, rather than singles, the focus of the band's efforts.  In addition, the music, lyrics and themes of the album were directly influenced by the band's use of psychedelic drugs, as well as the growing counter culture movement of the times.  Moreover, Revolver demonstrated the Beatles willingness to experiment in the studio with sound. instruments and technology,  techniques they would take to new heights with Sgt. Pepper's. The second decision was to cease touring at the end of 1966.  The band had grown frustrated with the sound quality of their live shows, the fact that the audience was barely listening to the music, and the growing security issues at each venue. In addition, they knew that the new music they were creating, such as the songs on Revolver, could never be reproduced on stage to due all the studio effects they were using.  Moreover, they saw working in the studio as the new path to expand their musicianship, innovate and create. Touring simply took them away from the studio work and interfered with the creative process. Once off the road, they had unlimited studio time, and the result was Sgt Pepper's.  This television soundboard recording captures The Beatles during that final tour, in Germany on June 24, 1966, 56 years ago today.

Otis Redding - 1966-04-10 - West Hollywood, CA (early) (SBD)

Otis 1967 - Back To Back - #1: Otis Redding established himself with the general public as a musical superstar with his show stopping performance at the Monterrey Pop Festival in May 1967, a set we posted previously on this blog.  Being the only soul artist on the bill at Moterrey reflected Redding's entire carrer - he was constantly a trailblazer, doing what no one before him had done.  According to the website for The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, his name was "synonymous with the term soul, music that arose out of the black experience in America through the transmutation of gospel and rhythm & blues into a form of funky, secular testifying." He was president of his own publishing firm, Redwal Music Co., Inc., where he was very active in the company’s operation and directly responsible for the company’s leadership in the music publishing field.  Otis also had his own Jotis Records label and was responsible for mentoring soul man Arthur Conley (of “Sweet Soul Music” fame) as one of its original artists.  At a time when it may not have been considered politically correct, Redding had a white manager, Phil Walden, and a racially mixed band.  This soundboard recording of the early show from from April 10, 1966, 56 years ago today, represents another of Redding's pioneering efforts.  Download this show to hear the King of Soul as he branched out beyond traditional venues for black artists, such as the Apollo Theater in Harlem, to play the legendary rock club, the Whiskey A Go Go on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood.  Then stop back later today for the 2nd half of this set.

The Beach Boys - 1966-01-07 - Tokyo, Japan (SBD)

1960s - #2:  The Beach Boys left California on January 5, 1966 and arrived in Tokyo the next day, their first visit to the Land of The Rising Sun.  The next day,  they played the first show of their tour, which would run until January 23. This soundboard recording captures that first concert, on January 7. 1966, 56 years ago today. What transpired at home in the US with the Beach Boys, however, was far more interesting than what took place on stage in Japan.  Brian Wilson has stayed behind, and began work on what would be perhaps the most important and influential album of the band's career, Pet Sounds.  The disc consistently shows up in the top 10 in almost every major rankling of rock albums.  For example,  in Rolling Stone magazine's 2003 ranking of the top 500 albums of all time, Pet Sounds finished 2nd, topped only by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.

1966 - Eric Clapton - Guitar. Jack Bruce - Bass. Ginger Baker - Drums. The "cream" of the crop of jazz and blues musicians in the London music scene pooled their talents in 1966, to create rock's first classic power trio. While their time together would be short, Cream proved to be one of the most influential rock groups in history, and are often considered the first "super group". They would pave the way for improvisational, free form jams that would become the hallmark of psychedelic rock scene. This BBC FM Broadcast captures Cream on December 9, 1966 in London, 55 years ago today and just about 5 months after their live debut in July. The broadcast features shorter versions of their songs as compared to later live performances. but is an important historical document of the band at its birth.

This FM Broadcast captures The Animals in Paris on March 15, 1966, 54 years ago today, and also features bonus tracks from shows in that city from 1964 and 1965. All told, these recordings capture most of the band’s classic singles. From 1964 to 1966, the Animals scored 6 top 20 singles on the US Billboard charts - House of The Rising Sun (#1), I’m Crying (#19), Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood (#15), We Gotta Get Out Of This Place (#13), Don't Bring Me Down (#12), See See Rider (#10) (Note - It’s My Life, another classic, reached #23 on the Billboard charts), In 1967, rebilled as Eric Burdon and The Animals, they would score 3 more top 20 tunes - When I Was Young (#15) , Monterey (also #15) and San Franciscan Nights (#9). They’d crack the top 20 one last time in 1968 with Sky Pilot at #14. Less than a year later, The Animals disbanded and Burdon had joined War.
