A week after their historic performance at Woodstock, CSNY took up resience at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles for 7 consecutive performances fom August 25 to 31. This excellent audience recording captures most of the last night at the Greek (it appears Find The Cost of Freedom, the last song of the electricset is missing), on August 31, 1969, 53 years ago today.  Of interest is that the notes indicate that CSNY opened for Blind Faith,  Those 2 bands are often considered the first 2 "super groups" - bands composed of musicians who had already been successful with other bands. In CSNY's case, Neil and Stephen had played with Buffalo Springfield, David with The Byrds and Graham with The Hollies. Blind Faith featured Eric Clapton and  Ginger Baker who had played with Cream, anlonside Steve Winwood who had garened fame both with Traffic and the Spencer Davis Group.

Fleetwood Mac - 1977-08-30 - Inglewood, CA (Ex Aud)

For Fleetwood Mac, 1977 was the year of Rumours, an album about and fueled by the emotional tensions within the band as long term relationships between John & Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham, and Mick Fleetwood and his wife Jenny, all came to an end. Rumours went to #1 on the Billboard charts, won the Grammy for album of the year, garnered critical acclaim, and has sold over 19 million copies, making it one of the top 10 best selling albums of all time. The album also helped launch another new rock trend - a glossy, polished, highly produced sound that in many ways became synonymous with the album/radio oriented rock of the decade. The album has also stood the test of time, being ranked #25 on Rolling Stone’s list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time, while both Time Magazine and VH1 listed it among the 100 best albums ever/ This excellent auidence recording, from legendary taper Mike Millard, captures Fleetwood Mac on tour in support of Rumours, in Inglewood om August 30, 1977, 45 years ago today.

In 1976, Robbie Robertson of The Band had grown tired of the grind of touring. He urged the group to retire from the road, and conceived the idea of a massive, star studded, retirement concert to be held on Thanksgiving Day, November 25 1976 at Winterland in San Francisco. Along the way to the Last Waltz, however, The Band embarked on one final tour, giving their fans across the country a last chance to see the classic line up of Robertson, Rich Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm. This soundboard recording captures The Band during that tour, in Lenox on August 29, 1976, 46 years ago today

U2 - 1993-08-28 - Dublin, Ireland (FM)

U2's Zoo tour in support of their album, Actung Baby, launched on February 29 (yes Leap Day!) and ran for almost 2 years until December 10, 1993, broken into 5 legs that spanned 4 continents. In contrast to U2's austere stage setups from previous tours, the Zoo TV Tour was an elaborately-staged multimedia event. The stage, which was 248 ft by 80 ft for the outdoor portion of the tour, featured dozens of large video screens that showed visual effects, random video clips, and flashing text phrases. The band incorporated live satellite link-ups, channel surfing, and crank calls into each performance. Eleven cars - German made Trabants which for some strange reason the band had an affinity for- hung from cranes over the stage and served to house spotlights. To escape their reputation for being overly serious, U2 embraced a more lighthearted and self-deprecating image on tour, with Bono playing a host of characters, including The Fly, Mirror Ball Man, MacPhisto. Such dramatic departures in staging and style could have been fatal to most bands, but U2, on the strength of the excellent material form Achtung Baby and their incredible ability to captivate a live audience, pulled it off. The tour played to over 5 million people, the album sold over 8 million copies and received rave critical reviews, and the band, in the words of Rolling Stones, were once again, "the world's biggest rock band."  This FM broadcast captures U2 on the last night of the 4th leg of the tour, on August 28, 1993, 29 years ago today, on their home turf in Dublin. While when you download this one you won't get all the special effects, you will get a fantastic performance by an incredible band.

Someone must have had a premonition when they asked a then relatively unknown band to fill in for Van Morrison, who skipped his own induction, at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame ceremony on January 16, 1993. Later that year, the band released the album August & Everything After, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts in the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round Here and Rain King.  The Counting Crows had arrived.  This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in  in support of their stunning debut disc, in Boulder, on August 27, 1993, 29 years ago today.

On May 3, 1994, the Allman Brothers released Where It All Begins, their 11th studio album and 3rd since te band reformed in 1990. The new disc included the single No One To Run With, which went to #7 on the Billboard mainstream rock charts. The album also featured Soulshine, written by Warren Haynes, which became one of Warren's signature live tunes, whether playing with the Allmans, Govt Mule or solo. This soundboard (or excellent auidence) recording captures the Allman's a little over a year after the rlease of Where It All Begins, in Saratoga Springs on August 26, 1995, 27 years ago today.

James Taylor - 1994-08-25 - Mansfield MA (SBD) 

James Taylor spent a good portion of the 1980s lost both musically and personally, as his marriage to Carly Simon disintegrated and he battled his addiction to heroin. As the decade neared it close, and the 1990s began, however, a now sober and clean JT began to rebuild his musical career. In 1988, he released Never Die Young, which reached #25 on the Billboard charts. Then in 1991, the album New Moon Shine went platinum and spawned 2 hit singles on the Adult Contemporary charts, in the he melancholic Copperline and the upbeat (I've Got to) Stop Thinkin' About That. He began touring regularly, especially on the summer amphitheater circuit. Those tours yielded the 1993 live double album, appropriately title Live, which reached #20 on the charts. This  sounboard recording captures Taylor during this career renaissance, in Mansfield on August 25, 1994, 28 years ago today.

• I can take requests for the re-post of a show or two. More than that becomes impossible - remember that I'm taking re-post requests from lots of folks. Over 800 a day visit the site.  If just 1% of those visiyirs - 8 people - ask for re-posts, that 8 to 16 shows daily.

• If you are asking me to re-post every dead link for a particular band, well, that's something I simply won't be able to do. Just not enough time in the day and I do have a wife, kids, job, etc.

• If you are rude in your request, you're getting no response.  

• If you go through a bunch of posts and simply comment "Dead Link", you are not getting a response

In 1982, as their fall tour came to a close, The Who announced that they were retiring. For a while, it looked like they meant it, as both Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend each released 3 solo albums between 1982 and 1989. In 1989, however, to celebrate the band's 25th anniversary, as well as the 20th anniversary of the album Tommy, The Who decided to reform and go back on the road. The good news was that each night of the tour was a 3 hour extravaganza, opening with selections from Tommy, followed by a mix of their greatest hits!  For the Los Angeles performance on Agust 25, 1989, 33 years ago today as captured in this soundboard recording The Who went "Hollywood", briningin in a host of special guests such as Steve Winwood Patti Labelle, Billy Idol, Phil Collins and Elton John for the Tommy section of the show.  By the way, it looks like at one point, Robert Plant was scheduled to be part of the show as this poster indicates.

Peter Frampton - 1972-08-23 - London, UK (FM)

In August 1969, Humble Pie released their debut album entitled, As Safe as Yesterday Is. The band featured Peter Frampton on guitar. Frampton would appear on 3 more Humble Pie discs before leaving the band to pursue a solo career. He released a solo album every year from 1972 to 1975, without a great deal of commercial success. While the album Frampton in 1975 went to #32 on the Billboard charts, the prior 3 discs failed to crack the top 100. Then, of course, in 1976 came the phenomenon known as Frampton Comes Alive, a double disc that sold over 6 million copies, went to $1 on the charts, spawned 3 top 15 singles, made the guitar talk box famous, and in some ways forever changed the music industry. Artists and record companies sought to produce similar blockbuster albums, and the late 1970s would produce a host of them including Rumours, Hotel California and Boston and Bat Out Of Hell. This FM Broadcast, however, captures Frampton before all the hype of his live album, playing a concert in London on August 23, 1972, 50 years ago today, right about when he released his first album.  near the end of the set, he provides a preview of what was to come a few years later whne he plays Do You Feel Like I Do!

Bruce Hornsby - 1998-08-22 - Dundee, OR (SBD)

In 1998, after several years of performing solo, Bruce Hornsby formed the Noisemakers, a new backing band consisting of John "JT" Thomas on keyboards, Bobby Read on woodwinds, JV Collier on bass, Doug Derryberry on guitar, and Michael Baker on drums, who was eventually replaced by Sonny Emory. The Noisemakers provided Bruce with new opportunities to reinvent his music in innovative and creative ways. In fact, at this point, Hornsby stopped planning set lists for his concerts, instead taking spontaneous requests from the audience to build each performance. Within each show, Hornsby encompassed rock, jazz, blues, country, Broadway and classical music all within a jam band framework. He often interspersed snippets of tunes from other artists into his own songs. This sounboard recording captures Hornsby and the Noisemakers, on tour riggt befoer the release of theor first album, Spirit Trail, in Oregon on August 22, 1998, 2 dozen years ago today.

Loggins & Messina - 1976-08-21 - Uniondale, NY (FM)

Jim Messina, formerly of Poco and the Buffalo Springfield, was working as an independent record producer for Columbia Records in 1970 when he met Kenny Loggins, a little known singer and songwriter who was signed to ABC Records. The two recorded a number of Loggins' compositions in Messina's home living room. Messina then helped Loggins negotiate a 6 album record deal with Columbia. Loggins began recording his debut album for Columbia in early 1971, with Messina serving as producer. By the time the album was completed, however, Messina had contributed so much to the album - songwriting, arrangements, instrumentation, and vocals - that his guest spot turned into a full time partnership with Loggins. Over the next 5 years, they would sell over 16 million records, establishing themselves as the best selling duo of the 1970s, a record they held until surpassed by Hall & Oates later in the decade. In 1976, they made the decision to pursue solo careers, but played one last tour before they went their separate ways. This FM broadcast captures them during that Farwell Tour, at the Nassau Coliseum August 21, 1976, 46 years ago today.

On July 5, 1996, Steely Dan launched their Art Crimes tour, their 3rd series of live performances after Walter Becker and Donald Fagan reformed the band in 1993. A two month run in the US would be followed in September with their first European shows in over two decades.  The band brought the tour to a close in October with a series of concerts in Japan.  This soundboard recording captures them on the last night of the US leg of the tour, on August 17, 1996, 26 years ago today.

Warren Haynes, know for his brilliant guitar work with the Allman Brothers and Gov't Mule, not to mention his solo work, has a long history of copnnection to Grateful Dead guitarist and front man, th elate great Jerry Garcia, who passed away 27 years ago this month. Warren's tune, Patchwork Quilt, is a tribute to Jerry, mentioning how the Allmans played a show at Jones Beach the night Jerry died,  In 2013, he launched the first of sveral Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebration tours, a series of shows in which he played a set list composed entirely of Garcia & Grateful Dead tunes, backed by a symphony orchestra. For many of those those show, Haynes played Garcia’s famed Wolf guitar. This soundbaord crecording, from August 16, 2003, 19 years ago today, captures Warren playing at another show in tribute to Garcia. This acoustoc set includes the aforementioned Patchwork Quilt, as well as Garcia's To Lay Me Down, as well as covers of In My Life, One, It Stoned Me and Comfotbaly Numb.

In August 1975, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band were booked to play ten shows at the Bottom Line night club, a tiny but legendary venue in the heart of New York City. At the time Springsteen was 2 weeks away from releasing his third album, Born to Run, a disc over a year in the making. His record label, Columbia was banking heavily on the disc, and planned a $250,000 promotional campaign featuring John Landau’s famous quote: "I saw rock 'n' roll's future—and its name is Bruce Springsteen." Columbia, also invited more than 1,000 industry insiders to the Bottom Line shows to see what fans of the Springsteen’s live performances had long known, namely that few acts could command a stage like Bruce and the E Street Band. The Bottom Line shows ere a defining moment in the band’s history. "It was our coming-out party," Springsteen said. "And some sort of transformation occurred over those five nights. We walked out of that place in a different place." The early show on August 15, 1975, 47 years ago today was broadcast live on WNEW-FM in New York. On August 15, 1965, the Beatles would once again make historywhen they took the stage at Shea Stadium, in Flushing Queens in New York City.  The show was the first on their 1965 summer tour, but more importantly, it was also the first-ever stadium rock concert. Beatlemania required a setting larger than any band before had ever needed. Rock & roll would never be the same after this show. Today's mega outdoor events, complete with video screens, giant stages, special effects and pyrotechnics are the legacy of the Beatles performance that August night in Queens. Introduced by eEd Sullivan they would play 12 songs in just 30 minutes, but the impact has lasted a life time. The night before their concert at Shea, The Beatles recorded their 4th appearance on the Ed Sullivam show,  Their first, of course, back on February 9, 1964, became the most watched television program of all time a that point in history.  This 1965 appearnace would be the last time they played live for Ed Sullivam  Future appearances would simply include promotional videos for their lates singles (Yes, long before MTv, The beatles created the music video!). This soundboard recording captures all 6 sonsg from that August 14, 1965 taping, which took place 57 years ago today. TV audiences wouldn't get to see it, however, until it was broadcast on September 15, 1965, when it garnerd a 60% share of the audience, yet another testament to the popularity of the Fab Four!

Frank Sinatra - 1981-08-13 - Sao Paolo, Brazil (SBD)

During the spring and summer of 1981, Freank Sinatra recrdied what woul dturn out to be his last solo album for Reprise Records, the label he founded in 1960!  The disc, entitkled She Shot Me Down, would also turn out to be the next to last solo album of his long, illustrius career. Theough not a commercial success, harkened back to the triumphs of Sinatra's Capitol years, a thought-provoking set of torch songs with soaring strings, lyrics fraught with loss and regret, and heart-rending, world-weary vocals.  In between recording sessions for the disc, Sinatra played a series of concerts in South America, 1 in Buenos Aries, Aregentina and 3 in Sao Paolo, Brazil.  This soundbaord reocrding captures Fran;s first night in Sao Paolo, on August 13m 1981, 41 years ago today.

Dick Latvala Memorial Concert - 1999-08-12 - Petaluma, CA (SBD)

In the 1970s. while living im Hawaii, Dick Latvala began to collect recordings of Grateful Dead concerts, often mailing other tapers marijuana in exchange for tapes. He maintained personal notebooks filled with commentary about particular Grateful Dead shows. As described by Grateful Dead archivist Nicholas Meriwether, Latvala "catalog[ed] his tapes in a series of notebooks, detailing their origin and provenance—who taped it and with what equipment—as well as when, where, what they played. He usually noted especially strong renditions as well as his impressions, which he would often revisit later, critiquing his critiques." Dick moved back to California in the early 1980s, going to work at the Grateful Dead's Front Street office in San Rafael. Prior to Latvala's arrival, the band did not actively maintain an archive of their recorded concerts. It was Latvala who convinced the band about the importance of maintaining such an archive. In 1993. Latvala eventually became the curator of Dick's Picks, a series of commercially released recordings of live Grateful Dead performances.  Latvala passed away on August 6, 1999 at the age of 56 from a heart attack. Six days later, and 23 years ago this very day, on  August 12, 1999, Bob Weir, Mickey Heart, Dave Nelson, and a host of others paid tribute to Latvala with a concert in Petulma as captured in this soundbord recording. But the concert wasn't his only legacy.  The Dick's Pick's series of releases continued until 2005, when volume 36 completed the run.  And in 2012, Dead archivist David Lemieux picked up where Dick has left off, launching the Dave's Picks series, which just reached voulme 43!

They recorded a double album, of just 14 songs, which flopped both critically and commercially upon release. They played about 30 concerts in the UK and about the same number in the US, mostly at small clubs and theaters. Their tour was marked by massive drug abuse and alcohol consumption. They split apart almost as quickly as they came together, with tension between the band members and paranoia due to all the drugs making it impossible for them to record a 2nd album. They were Derek and The Dominos, and their one studio effort, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, is now regarded as one of the masterpieces of rock and roll. The title track is one of the most famous songs in rock history, and other tunes from the album, such as Bell Bottom Blues, Anyday, Keep on Growing, and Why Does Love Have To Be So Sad, are all classics. It is one of the albums I grew up with, that I bought just about 2 years after its release, that I wore out the groves on, that helped foster my everlasting love for all things rock and roll. This sometimes excellent, most times very good, audience recording captures Derek & The Dominos in London on August 11, 1970, 52 years ago tday.  NOTE - this in an upgrade from previous recordings but its still far from perfect. It's not the quality we usually post but its Derek & The Dominoes, so we'll make ana exception!

Steve Miller - 2012-08-10 - Vienna VA (ALD)

Steve Miller was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1943. His parents were friends with guitar legend Les Paul, who encouraged young Steve’s interest in music. Miller later spent time in Dallas, Chicago and New York, honing his guitar skills. By 1966, however, he had found his way to San Francisco, and became part of the twin music and cultural revolutions that emerged from the City By The Bay. Miller originally played the blues, but by 1973, his music began to change, taking on more of what would soon be called an AOR sound. His tune the Joker went to #1 on the Billboard charts, and Miller set out to replicate that success with his next album. When Fly Like An Eagle was released in 1976, the album would be certified quadruple platinum, and climb to #3 on the Billboard charts. The title track would go to #2 on the Billboard singles chart, Take The Money and run would reach #11, and Rock’n Me would go all the way to the top spot. Miller continued to release successful albums and singles during the rest of the decade and into the early 1980s, but after the release of album Abracadabra in 1982 which went to #3 on the Billboard chars he never again had a major hit record. He continued to tour relentlessly, however, and draws crowds to this day This ALD recording captures Miller about 3 decades after his last hit album, and a decade ago today, in Vienna VA on August 10, 2012.
