While I went to 50 Grateful Dead concerts, I only saw Bob Weir solo once, in July 1992, as mentioned in our Bruce Cockburn post earlier this month.  That show was at the Meadowlands Summer Fest, which turned out to be a stage and seats set up in the parking lot at Giants Stadium. Oh the things promoter John Scher did to run a concert and make a bucks - you'll find even more in my book.

This soundboard recording captures Weir about a year earlier, in Pasadena on August 31, 1991, 35 years ago today.  Weir was accompanied by Rob Wasserman.  The two started working together in the late 1980s as a duo, and then formed the core of Ratdog, which in 1995, played their first show on August 8, 1995, the night before Jerry Garcia passed away.

As discussed in other posts on this blog, for musch of the early 1990s, when he wasn't on stage with the Grateful Dead, Bob Weir was touring with bassist Rob Wasserman, a partnership that began in the late 1980s.  his soundboard recording, however, captures Weir solo, doing an acoustic perfrormance to raise money for Jerry Brown's campaign for Governor, on May 10, 1992, 34 years ago today.

Bob Weir - 1990-01-10 - Maui, HI (SBD)

1990s - #2: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This soundboard recording captures Weir and Wasserman, in Maui on January 10, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.  NOTE:  Just hours after I posted this Bob passed away.  A sad, sad day. May he rest in peace.

As discussed yesterday, Bob Weir played twice at Farm Aid as a member of the Grateful Dead, with both appearances being simulcasts.  Weir actually showed up live for Farm Aid in 2023, playing a set backed by the Wolf Brothers.

This soundboard recording captures Weir backed by Rob Wasserman at The Ritz in New York City on September 28, 1991, 34 years ago today. Today, we bring you highlights from Farm Aid 2023, held in Noblesville, IN on September 23, 2023, 2 years ago today.  This TV soundboard recording captures full sets from the 3 founders - Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, as well as performances by 2 Bobs - Weir and Dylan. Weir hadn't appeared at Farm Aid since 1987, when part of the Grateful Dead's Madison Square Garden show was simulcast for the Farm Aid crowd.  Dylan, who had participated at the first 2 Farm Aids in 1985 and 1986, had not made an appearance since.  His participation in Farm Aid 2023 was not advertised in advance,  so the crowd was stunned when he took the stage.

Jerry Garcia 75th Birthday Celebration - 2017-08-04 - Morrison, CO (FM)

While we lost Jerry on August 9, 1995, his spirit and music lives on 3 decades later. The surviving members of the Grateful Dead have continued to play music in various configurations such as The Other Ones, the Dead, Furthur, ratdog, Phil Lesh & Friends, and Dead & Company, just to name a few. Musicians such as Warren Haynes, who were inspired by Jerry, have played tribute concerts in his honor, such as the Symphonic Celebration we posted yesterday. When Jerry Garcia passed away in 1995, the Grateful Dead's long strange 3 decade trip came to an unexpected end. The members of the band decided, at least temporarily, not to continue to play together out of respect for Jerry. They would change their minds in 1998 and reform as The Other Ones, and later play as the Dead and now as Further. In 1996 and 1997, however, they took a different approach to touring. The Further Festival made the rounds in the summer of those 2 years, a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Planet Drum, kindred spirits Hot Tuna, the Black Crowes, and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby, just to name a few. This soundboard recording captures the entire Furthur Festival from Cincinnati on July 16, 1997, 28 years ago today. The performances include two jams that were highlights of each stop on the tour, featuring the the various members of each band sitting in with one another, adding to the festival feeling!

2010s - #6: Since end of the Grateful Dead with the passing of Jerry Garcia in 1995, Bob Weir has continued to spend a huge portion of his life on the road.  From shows with Ratdog with s long time bass player Rob Wasserman, to post Dead spin offs such as The Other Ones, The Dead, Furthur and Dead & Company, to unique pairings with the National and the Wolf Bros, Weir may be playing live now more than ever before in his long storied career. In 2012, he did a solo acoustic tour, which he desribed to Rolling Stone magazine as "a lot of fun for me, because I get to be alone with the song. And I get to hear every little nuance; if my instrument does something that I wasn’t expecting, I get to chase that. Chase that down a little bit. It’s simple enough so that I can hear everything that I’m singing and playing, and I’m hearing stuff that I wouldn’t, in an ensemble, be able to hear. And I’m working with that stuff so that the songs are showing me new sides of themselves."  This soundboard recording captures Weir during that tour, in Charlottesville on April 26, 2012, 13 years ago today

Weir & Wasserman 1990 - Back To Back - #1: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This excellent audience recording captures Weir & Wassermann in their early days, in Hawaii, on Janaury 6, 1990, 35 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Jerry Garcia & Bob Weir - 1987-12-17 - San Francisco CA (SBD)

As mentioned in numerous earlier posts, Jerry Garcia made a miraculous comeback in 1987, escaping death’s door when he finally emerged from a diabetic coma. After re-teaching himself to play guitar, Jerry rejoined the Grateful Dead and the band embarked on one of their best tours in years. The fall 1987 shows, especially those at Madison Square Garden, were especially memorable, with the 9-18-1987 show often being cited as one of the best of the decade. Soon after the fall tour ended, Garcia embarked on a new venture. Jerry took up residence at the historic Lunt-Fontanne Theater in New York’s Broadway district from October 15 to October 31.  Garcia played 18 concerts in 13 days, with 5 days featuring both the traditional Broadway matinee and a late show. Each show consisted of an acoustic set followed by an electric set.  As the year came to a close, Garcia, along with Grateful Dead bandmate Bob Weir, and long time collaborator, bassist John Kahn, played an acoustic set at a benefit concert hosted by Joan Baez to raise funds to fight AIDs.   This soundboard recording captures their set that night, December 17.1987, 37 years ago today, with Joan sitting in for the 3 three songs.
