1979 Punk & New Wave #4: While mainstream rock and roll fans may not have discovered many punk/new wave bands until 1979, The Ramones had already been playing for over 5 years at that point. In 1974, The Ramones played at CBGBs, the now legendary and defunct rock club in the Bowery District in NY, 74 times! They signed their first recording contract in 1975, and released their first album in 1976. Their hard driving, straight ahead, stripped down, anti-establishment, incessant form of rock, with no song longer than 2 ½ minutes, coupled with the black leather jackets, t-shirt and jean wardrobe, combined to usher in a new era of rock music. The Ramones were the clear leaders of the punk movement in NY, taking a stand against the mid 70s trends toward overblown and/or overly sentimental rock songs and albums. This soundboard recording captures the band on October 31, 1979, 35 years ago today, in Evanston IL. Side note #1: Just 4 months after this show, The Ramones would release the album End Of The Century, which found the leaders of the Punk movement working with Phil Spector and taking a turn toward a more pop oriented sound! Side note #2: I would see The Ramones for the 1st and only time on July 18, 1981, at a bar fittingly called the Hole In The Wall.

Electric Proms #4: Our final show in our Electric Proms fourplay is an FM broadcast featuring Neil Diamond on October 30, 2010, 4 years ago today. Diamond closed the festival, which turned out to be the last set ever performed at the Electric Proms series. In January 2011, the BBC announced the cancellation of all future Electric proms shows due to financial cutbacks. For Diamond, it was his first concert in almost 2 years. As he took the stage, he remarked “I've not performed for two years and I was wondering before I came out here tonight, 'Are you going to make a fool out of yourself?' And the answer is absolutely, yes. I have every intention of doing that." In truth, what Diamond did was wow the crowd. He played a mix of tune from his soon to be released album Dreams, such as I’m A Believer, which Neil wrote but was made famous by The Monkees, Ain't No Sunshine and Midnight Train To Georgia as well as classics such as I Am… I Said, Sweet Caroline and Brother Love's Travelling Salvation Show. If Electric Proms had to end, it couldn’t have left on a higher note.

1979 Punk & New Wave #3: In October 1979, Pat Benatar released her first album, In The Heat of The Night. Having already released 2 singles that year that failed to chart, expectations for the album were minimal. Benatar herself said "My album was the last of a bunch by female singers to come out so I was told not to expect much, even though Mike Chapman was producing." Instead, the album went to #12 on the Billboard charts, propelling Pat to stardom. The next single, Heartbreaker, released in December 1979, was a smash hit, climbing to #23 on the charts. As the 1970s became the 1980s, Pat Benatar would become the leading lady of rock and roll, winning 4 consecutive Grammy Awards for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance, from 1980 to 1983. All that was in the future though, when Pat played in Boston on October 20, 1979, 35 years ago today.

The Who - 2006-10-29 - London (FM)

Electric Proms #3: So far, our Electric Proms fourplay has featured Sir Paul from 2007, and Elton &Leon from 2010. Today we go back to 2006, the inaugural year of the festival, for a set from The Who. Of course, at that point, The Who consisted of just 2 of its original 4 members, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend, as Keith Moon and John Entwistle had passed away in 1978 and 2002, respectively. Zach Starkey - yep, Ringo's son - was now on drums and Pino Palladino handled the bass. Simon Townshend, Pete's brother provided a 2nd guitar and backing vocals while John "Rabbit" Bundrick rounded out the band on keyboards. The Who were actually in the middle of the US leg of their World Tour in October 2006, but took a brief break to be in London to serve as the closing act for the Electric Proms. The band played a string of their greatest hits, along with several numbers from Townshend's latest mini rock opera, Wire and Glass. This soundboard recording captures the entire Electric Proms performance, from October 29, 2006, 8 years ago today. .

Rockpile - Alone & Together #4: Our last entry in our Rockpile fourplay is an soundboard recording that captures Nick Lowe with Paul Carrack on October 29, 1982, 32 years ago today. In 1981 after the breakup of Rockpile, Lowe recorded a solo album entitled Nick The Knife. The disc, however, has several ties to his former band. First, it includes a slowed down cover of the Rockpile tune, Heart. Second, both drummer Terry Williams and guitarist Billy Bremner from the band back Lowe on the album. So too do guitarist Martin Belmont, from The Rumour and Paul Carrack, formerly of Squeeze. When Lowe went on tour in support of the album, his backing band, Noise To Go, consisted of Carrack, Belmont, James Eller and Bobby Irwin.

Electric Proms #2: Much has been written about Buffalo Springfield’s reunion concerts in October 2010, an event 42 years in the making, including an entire post right here on this blog just days ago. Believe it or not, that same month, 2 other rock legends reunited, also after not playing together for 4 decades! Elton John and Leon Russell first met at Elton’s initial US show at the Troubadour in Los Angeles in 1970. They played several shows together later that year, including a legendary show at the Fillmore East on November 21. At that time, Elton was still climbing the ladder to super stardom while Leon was already established as one of the finest session musicians and songwriters in the business. The two then lost touch; so much so that when Elton called Leon in early 2009 to discuss working together, Leon was completely shocked as they had not spoken for almost 35 years. Elton had been listening to Leon’s music while on safari in Africa, and was so moved that he felt compelled to reach out to his long lost friend and inspiration. That phone call led to a recording session, during which Elton and Leon produced the aptly titled album, The Union. For Elton, The Union marks a return the acoustic-based, country-flavored sound of his early recordings like Tumbleweed Connection. It also presented an opportunity to garner renewed recognition for one of his idols. “If Leon can get the accolades he deserves and be financially O.K. for the rest of his life, I will have done something decent with my music,” Elton said in a call from his home in France. For more on this historic reunion, read this article. The duo followed up the album’s release with a brief concert tour starting at the Beacon Theater in New York on October 18 and ending in Florida on November 21. They played one date together outside the US, on October 28, 2010, 4 years ago today, at The Electric Proms Festival at the Roundhouse in London. This FM broadcast captures every note of that historic performance, including the entire Union album, classic Leon tunes such as Delta Lady and Song For You, and a host of Elton’s best songs, such as Burn Down The Mission, Levon and Tiny Dancer. By the way, pay special attention to the tune In The Hands of Angels,, which Leon wrote for Elton. The song tells the tale of the album, and was Leon’s way to thank Elton, the guv’ner” in the lyrics, who “knew all the places I needed to go” and made him “feel the love down deep inside.”

Bruce Hornsby - 1998-10-27 - Oakland, CA (SBD) 

Hornsby at Yoshi’s #1. In 1998, after several years of performing solo, Bruce Hornsby formed the Noisemakers, a new backing band consisting of John "JT" Thomas on keyboards, Bobby Read on woodwinds, JV Collier on bass, Doug Derryberry on guitar, and Michael Baker on drums, who was eventually replaced by Sonny Emory. The Noisemakers provided Bruce with new opportunities to reinvent his music in innovative and creative ways. In fact, at this point, Hornsby stopped planning set lists for his concerts, instead taking spontaneous requests from the audience to build each performance. Within each show, Hornsby encompassed rock, jazz, blues, country, Broadway and classical music all within a jam band framework. He often interspersed snippets of tunes from other artists into his own songs, such when The Band’s Don’t Do It was incorporated into Western Skyline. In addition to experimenting with the Noisemakers, Hornsby also used 1998 to innovate and grow as a solo artist. He headlined at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in Oakland, playing a 10 night run of solo concerts, with 2 shows a night, in late October and early November 1998. This soundboard recording includes both shows the opening night of the run, On October 27, 1998, 16 years ago today. November's Theme At So Many Roads

The 11th day of the 11th month of 2014 marks the 5th Anniversary of So Many Roads, so to celebrate, our theme for next month is Concerts from the 1970s.  That's the  decade when I went to my first concert, that spawned my love for live music, which in turn led me to collect bootleg tapes, which eventually led me to start So Many Roads.

Electric Proms #1: In October 2006, BBC Radio 2 launched the Electric Proms festival, which ran for 5 years until recently cancelled due to financial issues. The festival’s website provided the following description of the event: “Radio 2 Electric Proms showcases unique performances from world class artists. These concerts are not just another date on the tour, but a show especially created for the BBC by the world's most loved musicians to create new moments in music. Performances may include exclusive collaborations, using orchestras or something completely new played out to an intimate audience at the iconic Roundhouse, London.” During its brief history, Electric Proms featured some of the biggest names in rock, including Robert Plant, Ray Davies, Elton John, The Who and Neil Diamond In year 2, Paul McCartney played Electric Proms on October 25, 2007, 7 years ago today. This was the last of only 6 shows that McCartney played that year, all designed to promote his latest album, Memory Almost Full, which had been released in June of that year. This soundboard recording of that show captures Sir Paul in fine form in an intimate setting that truly lets him interact with the audience. Maybe he found inspiration from the anagram that can be made from the album’s title: “for my soul mate LLM" (the initials of Linda Louise McCartney)..

Stephen Stills - 1976-10-25 - Palladium, NY (FM)

Guitar Gods Go Solo #4: As both the guitarist for Buffalo Springfield and CSN, Stephen Stills is a two time inductee in to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That said, his solo work apart from those 2 bands can clearly stand on its own. He appeared on the Super Session album in 1968 with Al Kooper and Mike Bloomfield, which went to #12 on the Billboard charts. His debut solo album in 1970, in the wake of his success with CSNY, yielded the top 15 single Love The One You’re With. In 1971, Stills played guitar for the Bill Withers album, Just as I Am, including the Grammy-winning song, Ain't No Sunshine. The next year, during one of CSNY’s many break up, Stills formed Manassas, and the band’s debut album went to #4 on the Billboard charts. He’s released 8 other solo albums in addition to his debut, and while not all measured up to his earliest work, there’s no question he has built an enduring legacy. This FM broadcast captures Stills at the Palladium in New York on October, 25, 1976, 38 years ago today. At the time, Stills was on the outs with all 3 of his former partners. Neil had left him without warning in the middle of the Stills-Young Band tour earlier that year. Crosby and Nash were angry with him (and Neil) for wiping their vocals from early recordings of the Long May You Run album, after the pair had to leave the recording session to fulfill other contractual obligations. Eventually, all was forgiven and CSN reunited in 1977 and have been together ever since, while Neil rejoined the trio many years later, in 2000, for a series of tours to launch the new century.

Rockpile - 1978-10-24 - Bottom Line, NY (FM)

Rockpile - Alone & Together #3: Our 3rd entry in this fourplay final features Rockpile in its entirety. For a band that released only one album, Seconds of Pleasure, Rockpile has an amazing legacy. What many folks don't know is that songs like Cruel to Be Kind, credited to Nick Lowe, and Girls Talk, credited to Dave Edmunds, were really recorded while they were working together as Rockpile! Because the two were on different labels, however, they could not credit the band! Moreover, it’s a bit strange, to say the least, that an English group that started as a new wave band also was known for its strong rockabilly influences. Unfortunately, Rockpile had a short lived career as tensions between Lowe and Edmunds split the band apart. Fortunately for me, I got to see them during their 1979 tour, on July 8, as the lead-in band for Blondie as part of the Summer Concert Series at Belmont Race Track. Unfortunately, I've never been able to find a tape of that show. I do have, however, this WNEW-FM broadcast from the Bottom Line in NY on October 24, 1978, 3 dozen years ago today.

Dave Edmunds - 1994-10-23 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

Rockpile: Alone & Together #2: We previously brought you some solo Nick Lowe as part of our Rocpile fourplay, so now let’s focus our attention on the band’s other front man, Dave Edmunds. Since his heyday in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Edmunds as often found himself playing live in collaborative ventures with other rock stars. For example, he was a member of both the 1989 and 1999 versions of Ringo Starr’s All Starr Band. In 1990, he hosted the Rock & Roll Revue, which also featured Kim Wilson (Fabulous Thunderbirds(, Graham Parker and Dion. That said, Edmunds still found time for some solo shows, such as this one on October 23, 1994, 2 decades ago today, in San Francisco. This FM broadcast captures him on tour in support of Plugged In, which at this point, is the last album of new material released by Edmunds.

Simon & Garfukel - 1966-10-21 - Baltimore (SBD)

Duos #3: We continue our fourplay focusing on rock duos with a show from one of the most successful though turbulent, partnerships in rock history. On January 21, 1966, the single, The Sounds of Silence, hit number 1 on the Billboard Charts. Ironically, the song had been released 2 years earlier on Simon and Garfunkel’s first album, Wednesday Morning, 3 AM, an album that had been a commercial flop. Moreover, at the time the song entered the charts, Simon and Garfunkel were not working together, the duo having broken up in 1965. Commercial success got them back together, resulting in the release of 2 classic albums in 1966.  In January, they released The Sounds of Silence, capitalizing on the success of the single! Then in October, they released Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. The 2 discs firmly established the genre we now call folk rock, and were filled with songs which today are classics, including I Am a Rock, Richard Cory, Scarborough Fair, Homeward Bound, and The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy). This soundboard recording, from John Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, on October 21, 1966, 4 dozen years ago today, captures Simon and Garfunkel just a few days after the release of Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. 1979 Punk & New Wave #2: We continue our fourplay looking at punk rock and new wave in 1979 with an FM broadcast of Joe Jackson in Chicago on October 20, 1979, 35 years ago today. As I’ve mentioned in the past, in the Bible, you’ll find the Three Wise Men. In the bible of new wave music, you’ll find the Three Angry Young Men, Graham Parker, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. Jackson’s debut album, Look Sharp was released in the UK in January 1979, and then in the US, in April of that same year. Propelled by the single Is She really Going Out With Him, which climbed to #21 on the Billboard Charts, the album did even one better, reaching the #20 position. He released his 2nd album I’m The Man, on October 5, 1979, just about 2 weeks before this show. That disc would go to #22 on the Billboard charts. While not quite the one two punch of Elvis Costello’s first 2 albums (My Aim Is True and This Year's Model), Jackson’s debut and follow up discs made it clear he would be a musical force in the years to come.

Rockpile - Alone & Together #1: As long time readers of this blog know, I’m a big fan of Rockpile and its 2 front men, Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. So here’s a fourplay dedicated to both their work as a band and as solo artists. This WNEW-FM broadcast captures Lowe on Oct 19, 1985, 29 years ago today, at The Ritz in NY. Billed as Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit, this show also features Paul Carrack, of Ace and Squeeze fame, on the keyboards behind Nick. In fact, the set list includes Carrack’s two best know tunes, How Long and Tempted. Also, included is Shake and Pop, which is basically the same song as They Called It Rock, just with different lyrics for the chorus. Typical Nick Lowe, the master of satire! By the way, if you don’t own Lowe’s first album, Jesus of Cool, which was released in the U.S. as Pure Pop For Now People, then you’re missing one of the great pop albums of all time. .
