Few bands in rock history have been as star crossed as Badfinger. The band was signed by Apple Records in 1969, and scored a top 10 hit in the US with the tune Come & Get It, written by Paul McCartney. Two more top 10 songs, and a top 15 single would follow in the net 3 years, with No Matter What, Day After Day and Baby Blue. Badfinger would get caught, unfortunately, in the chaotic unravelling of Apple, which made it difficult for the band to get paid. Moreover, their manager, Stan Polley, was embezzling what funds the bad did have. The financial crisis coupled with legal entanglements brought on by the demise of Apple proved too much for Peter Ham,.one of the founders of the band, to endure. He committed suicide at the age of 27 in 1975. Eight years later, Tom Evans of the band would do likewise. Two tragic ends to what was once a promising musical career. This soundboard recording captured Badfinger, before the dark times, during their triumphant 1972 tour promoting the album Straight Up and the single Day After Day, on April 7, 1972, 4 dozen years ago today.
