I saw Blondie in concert once, on July 8, 1979 as part of a double bill with Rockpile at Belmont Race Track.  More on that show when we get to our Rockpile post in a few days.

This FM broadcast captures Blondie over 3 decades later, in Liverpool on August 1, 2011, 15 years ago today. The band was on tour in support of their 9th studio album, enitled Panic of Girls, which had been released in May. It was  their first disc of new material in nearly 8 years, since 2003's The Curse of Blondie. By the way, Blondie paid tribute to the fact that they were in The Beatles' home town by playing Please Please Me!

Blondie 1979 - Back To Back - #1: After achieving m0dest commercial success were their first 2 albums, Blondie hit it big with their third album, Parellel Lines.  Released in September 1978, the disc went to #1 on the UK charts and climbed to #6 on the Billboard charts in the US.  The single from the disc, Heart Of Glass, did even better, climbing all the way to #1 in both countries. This soundbaord recording captures Bliondie on tour in support of Parellel Lines at the early show at the Convention Center in Asbury Park on July 7, 1979, 47 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back later today for the 2nd half of this Back to Back set.

I saw Blondie in concert once,  on July 8, 1979 as part of a double bill with Rockpile at Belmont Race Track.  The contrast between the punk rockers and the Belmont betting clientele, many of who looked like Oscar Madison from the Odd Couple,  is a sight I'll never forget.  The show was also part of a run of 4 concerts in 3 weeks, as the night before I saw Stephen Stills at The Garden State Arts Center, and then the next 2 Saturdays I would see Jorma on July 14 and the Allman Brothers on July 21.

2006 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2006-03-13 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

As could be said about many of the rock & Roll Hall Of Fame induction ceremonies, the 2006 version was "the best of times, the worst of times."  Ozzy and Black Sabbath finally got inducted, but opted to have Metalica play a set of Sabbath tunes. The Sex Pistols no showed, and sent a scathing letter comparing the hall to a urine stain. Blondie's induction was over shdowed by the fact that Debbie Harry wouldn't allow former bandmates Frank Infante and Nigel Harrison to perform, the result of years of tension between the three. The surviving members of Lynyrd Skynyrd performed 2 tunes, getting some help from Kid Rock on Sweet Home Alabama. The most fun that night - 2001 Hall Of Famer Solomon Burke performing a tribute to the late, great Wislon Pickett.

In another example of band infighting erupting at an induction ceremony, while all 7 members of Blondie were in attendance, Debbie Harry, Chris Stein and Clem Burke would not let Frank Infante, Jimmy Destri, Nigel Harrison and Gary Valentine perform.

Blondie - 1980-01-12 - London, UK (FM)

In October 1979, Blondie released Eat to the Beat, the follow up album to the critically acclaimed disc Parallel Lines.  While not quite as commercially successful as its predecessor, Eat To The Beat was certified Platinum in the United States, spent a year on the Billboard charts. and reached  #17.The disc climbed all the way to #1 on the charts in the UK. Blondie also released a video version of the album, featuring a music video for all 12 tracks, the first time a band had ever attempted such a project.  This FM broadcast captures Blondie in London on tour in support of Eat To The Beat, on January 12, 1980, 4 decades ago today.

After David Johansen closed his set at The Paradise on May 27, 1978, 41 years ago today, another new wave/punk icon took the stage. In early 1978, Blondie, led by Deborah Harry, released their second album, Plastic Letters, which slipped into the bottom quarter of the Billboard top 100 albums at #78. The disc enjoyed far more success in the UK. What no one at the Paradise could imagine, however, is that by the end of the year, Blondie would become an enormous success in the US. The album Parallel Lines, released in September, would hit #6 on the US charts, propelled by the single Heart Of Glass, which climbed all the way to the top spot.
