Well, in a month dedicated to Bruce Springsteen, there’s probably no better way to finish off our tribute than with a post featuring the man to who Bruce has been most often compared. On June 30, 1999, 15 years ago today, Eric Clapton fronted a sold-out benefit concert at New York's Madison Square Garden on June 30, 1999, to raise funds for the Crossroads Centre, the drug and alcohol rehab facility he established on the Caribbean island of Antigua. The event, billed as Eric Clapton and Friends, featured an opening set by EC, followed by performances by Sheryl Crow and Mary J. Blige, both backed by Slowhand on guitar. Clapton followed those 2 with another set of his own, after which, a special guest strode on stage. Bob Dylan took a night off from his tour with Paul Simon to join EC for a 6 song set. This soundboard recording captures Dylan’s entire performance, as well as the 2 song encore, which included Dylan returning to the stage for Bright Lights, Big City.

• Bruce Springsteen signed a record deal with Columbia Records in 1972, with the help of John Hammond, who had signed Bob Dylan to the same label a decade earlier.
• In his early days, Springsteen was often called the next Bob Dylan. For example, Peter Knobler of Crawdaddy once wrote “He sings with a freshness and urgency I haven't heard since I was rocked by 'Like a Rolling Stone.” 
• Springsteen inducted Dylan into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988. 
• Also in 1988, when Bruce headlined the Amnesty International Human Rights Now Tour, he included a cover of Dylan’s Chimes of Freedom in his set list. 
• Springsteen appeared with Dylan in Little Steven’s 1985 video for the song Sun City which was produced to protest apartheid. 
• According to legend, when Dylan first met Springsteen, Bob greeted Bruce by saying “Hey, I hear you’re the new me.”

Yesterday, we brought you Bruce from June 2008, during the latter part of his Magic tour.  Today we skip forward a year later and bring you a performance from the early stages of his Working On A Dream tour. Springsteen had released the Working On A Dream album om January 2009/ Like its predecessor,  the disc debuted ta #1 on the Billboard charts. Bruce went on tour in support of Working on A Dream in April 2009, with a focus, especially in Europe, on playing major festivals.  For example, this HQ audience recording from June 28, 2009, 5 years ago today, finds Bruce & The E-Street band on stage at the Hard Rock Calling Festival in London.

Tom Petty - 1987-06-27- Mansfield MA (SBD) 

After spending much of 1986 on tour as Bob Dylan’s backing band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers went back into the studio to work on a new album. The result was the disc Let Me Up (I've Had Enough) which was released on April 21, 1987. The album went to #20 on The Billboard charts, and yielded the single Jammin’ Me, which climbed to #18. Jammin' Me was co written with Bob Dylan. This soundboard recording captures Petty on tour in support of Let Me Up (I've Had Enough), in Mansfield on June 27, 1987, 27 years ago today.

Tom Petty/Bruce Springsteen Connections

• In an interview with Rolling Stone, Petty said that the song he wrote with the Traveling Wilbury’s, Tweeter and The Monkery Man, was meant as a tribute to Bruce Springsteen. 
• Bruce & The E-Street Band and Petty &amp The Heartbreakers headlined the 2012 Jazz fest in New Orleans.
• Several sources on the internet speculate that Springsteen finally agreed to do the Super Bowl half time after seeing Petty was successful playing the event. 
• Petty and Bruce both played at the 2012 Isle of Wight festival. 
• Springsteen and Petty both played at the No Nukes concerts at Madison Square Garden in September 1979.

Bruce Springsteen - 2008-06-27 - Paris, France (Ex Aud) 

On September 25, 2007, Bruce Springsteen released Magic, his 15th studio album and first with the E-Street Band since The Rising in 2002. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, becoming Springsteen's eighth #1 album in the US. Just a week after the album’s release, Bruce launched a world tour, which would run until August 30, 2008 and encompass 100 shows over 5 legs, 3 in the US and 2 in Europe. This excellent audience recording captures Bruce and the band on the 2nd European leg, on June 27, 2008, 6 years ago today. By this stage of the tour, the set lists had grown to 30 songs, with Bruce varying many of the song choices each night. For example, at this Paris show, Bruce inserted the rarely played For You and Janey Don’t Your Lose Heart into the set list.

The Who - 2007-06-24 - Glastonbury, UK (FM)

The Glastonbury festival has been rocking the UK every year since 1970, but not until 2007 did The Who headline the event. Opening with I Can’t explain, the band gave fans in attendance a 90 minute tour de force, covering the vast catalog of tunes with the energy and passion of a band that may never die, as they just might never grow old. The encore found just Peter Townshend and Roger, Daltrey on stage, the two surviving members of the band, playing a a quiet, acoustic version of Tea & Theatre, perhaps a reminder of the hole left by the deaths of John Entwistle and Keith Moon. This soundboard recording captures The Who’s entire performance from Glastonbury on, June 24, 2007, just 7 years ago today.

• Both Bruce and The Who played at the 12-12-12 concert to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. 
• Roger Daltrey's greatest hits album, Gold, includes a live cover of Bruce’s Born To Run.

Bruce Springsteen - 1978-06-24 - Portland, OR (SBD)

On May 23, 1978, Bruce Springsteen launched a 115 show tour that would last through the end of the year in support of his new album, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, which was released on June 2. Darkness was Springsteen’s first disc since Born To Run In 1975, the 3 years wait the result of a legal battle with his former manager, Mike Appel. All 10 songs from the album found their way into the Bruce’s set list at some point during the tour, with Badlands taking the prominent role of show opener. Perhaps the long wait for the album had increased the level of emotion among Bruce’s loyal fans, as thee shows on this tour are often described as intense. Springsteen biographer Dave Marsh wrote, for example, “"The screaming intensity of those '78 shows are part of rock and roll legend in the same way as Dylan's 1966 shows with the Band, the Rolling Stones' tours of 1969 and 1972, and the Who's Tommy tour of 1969: benchmarks of an era.” This soundboard recording captures Bruce early on during that tour, in Portland on June 16, 1978, 3 dozen years ago today. John Fogerty - 2007-06-23 - Glastonbury, UK (FM)

Unfortunately for those of us who like to collect live music, very few good bootlegs exits of Creedence Clearwater Revival. Moreover, for the longest time after that legendary band broke up, John Fogerty refused to play the classic tunes he wrote with CCR due to legal disputes with his former record company. That what makes this soundboard recording from Fogerty from June 23, 2007, 7 years ago today, so rewarding, John lit up the stage that day at the Glastonbury Festival with a set featuring 16 songs, almost every one of which was a CCR classic.

• Both John and Bruce played at the 2014 New Orleans Jazz Fest held from April 25 to May 4
• In October 2004, Bruce Springsteen,& John Fogerty participated in a series of concerts in 8 key states leading up to the Presidential election. Fogerty came out during Bruce’s set to play Centerfield, Déjà Vu All Over Again and Fortunate Son. He also joined Bruce during the encore.
• On October 29, 2009, during Day 1 of the Rock & Roll Hall Of fame 25th Anniversary Concert at Madison Square Garden, Fogerty joined Bruce on stage to play Fortunate Son, Proud Mary and O Pretty Woman.
• At CCR’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, Fogerty refused to play with his former band mates due to tensions over legal matters, so instead he was backed by Springsteen and Robbie Robertson.

The tragic events of Sept 11, 2001 brought an outpouring of support for the city of New York from the rock and roll community. From the America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon about a week after the attack to the Concert for New York in October, rock’s biggest stars – Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bill Joel, The Who, U2, and David Bowie, just to name a few – turned out to support the battered, but always resilient city. Few gave as much as did New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. He opened the telethon with the song My City of Ruins, originally written for Asbury Park, but now transformed into “a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters." From that tune emerged an entire album dedicated to the memory of 9-11, an album fittingly titled The Rising, because New York would not bow down to the terrorists who attempted to destroy her will. Springsteen’s work on The Rising was some of the best of his career. When the album debuted in early 2002, it went straight to number 1 on the charts, with glowing reviews from the critics. Springsteen took his message of hope on the road, launching The Rising Tour on August 7, 2002, at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey The tour would include 120 shows in North America, Europe and Australia, and run until October 2003. Bruce Springsteen - 2006-06-22 - New York NY (Ex Aud)

On April 25, 2006, Bruce Springsteen released the album We Shall Overcome: The Pete Seeger Sessions. Recorded without the E-Street Band, the album was Bruce’s first (and to this date only) effort that does not include original material. Instead, he covers 13 classic American folk tunes, all of which had been made popular by Pete Seeger, the legendary folk singer. Springsteen went on tour in support of the disc soon after its release, playing 4 warm up shows in Asbury Park and an appearance at The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Bruce then took the tour to Europe for 10 shows in May, before returning home ti the US. This excellent audience recording captures Bruce on the 3rd to last night of the tour, on June 22, 2006, 8 years ago today, at New York’s Madison Square Garden. This show gives you a far different look at Bruce, apart from the E-Street Band, focusing on covers rather than his own music, and makes for a unique addition to any live collection of his music.

On June 29, 1984, Bruce Springsteen launched the Born In The USA tour in support of the album of the same name, a 156 show extravaganza that ran until October 5, 1985. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the top 10 for the duration if the entire tour. Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ grade, ranking it as the best disc of 1984. Rolling Stone gave it a 5 star review, and would eventually rank it as #85 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time. The video for Dancing In The Dark, the first single from the album, received extensive airplay on MTv which helped propel it to the #2 position on the Billboard singles charts. In all, the album would yield seven top 10 singles. The tour, which featured Nils Lofgren on guitar in place of Miami Steve Van Zandt, who had left the E-Street Band to pursue a solo career. The 1985 leg of the tour marked the first time Springsteen played outdoor stadiums, including his first 6 shows at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford NJ. Today’s soundboard, however, goes back about a week before the madness and mania of the Born In The USA tour. On June 21, 1984, 3 decades ago this very day, Bruce and the E-Streeters stopped in on a small club called the Village in Lancaster PA for an unannounced, half hour warm up show. Only about 500 people were in the club, a far cry from the 50,000 plus crowds that filled stadiums across the US during the tour’s Closing Leg.

In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in The Blue Brothers, to put the band back back together. The Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band reunion tour launched in April 1999 and stretched until July 2000. On highpoint of the tour was a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. Another was a 10-night, sold-out engagement at New York City's Madison Square Garden, including this show from 14 years ago today on June 20, 2000. At key points in each show, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Springsteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll. Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. With the band reunited, the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man, Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. For the Dead, the summer of 1992 marked the last real high point in the band’s long storied career. Soon after this tour, Garcia suffered another medical set back , related to the 1986 incident that left him in a diabetic coma. The Dead were forced to cancel their fall tour. While they hit the road again in 1993, the Dead never quite regained form in the last few years leading to Garcia’s premature death in 1995. As captured in this soundboard recording, however, the boys pulled out all the stops at this show in Washington DC, on June 20, 1992, 18 years ago today. As they emerged from the drums/space segment, a loud airhorm blared, signaling the return of Casey Jones to the band's set list for the first time since November 2, 1984!  They band would only play that tune 3 more times before their end in 1995. Grateful Dead/Bruce Springsteen Connections

• Bruce’s long time saxophonist, right hand man and best friend, Clarence Clemons sat in with the Grateful Dead for at least 5 shows in 1988 and 1989. In addition, Clarence played several concerts with the Jerry Garcia Band in the fall of 1989. Clarence joined a select list of horn players to sit in with the Dead, which included such legends as Branford Marsalis and David Murray.
• In both 1988 & 1991, The Dead set a record by playing 9 nights at Madison Square Garden, the most in a single run by any band up to that time. Bruce broke that record in 2000 with 10 shows. While the Garden claims the record is 12 shows, by Billy Joel in 2006 and again in 2014, those runs were over several months (4 in 2006, 12 in 2014). The Dead’s 9 shows were over just 11 days, while Bruce’s 10 concerts were across 21 days. 
• Bruce played 24 shows at Giants Stadium before it was demolished. The Dead are second with 14 concerts at that venue. 
• Both Bruce and The Dead have played Buddy Holly’s Not Fade Away as part of their live shows.

James Taylor - 1986-06-17 - Berlin, Germany (FM)

In the early 1980s, James Taylor found his life falling apart around him. His marriage to Carly Simon ended, he was once again hooked on drugs, close friends John Belushi and Dennis Wilson both died tragically, and his music career had stalled. He thought it might be time to retire. Then he was invited to play at the Rock in Rio Festival in Rio De Janiero in January 1985 and his life changed dramatically. In an interview years later, Taylor described the experience as follows: “We put the band together and went down and it was just an amazing response. I played to 300,000 people. They not only knew my music, they knew things about it and were interested in aspects of it that to that point had only interested me. To have that kind of validation right about then was really what I needed. It helped get me back on track.” He penned the tune Only a Dream in Rio as a tribute to that night, filling the song with hopeful lyrics such as “I was there that very day and my heart came back alive.” This soundboard recording captures the rejuvenated JT about 18 months later, in Berlin, on June 17, 1986, 28 years ago today.

Elvis Costello - 1999-06-16 - Toronto, Canada (SBD) 

While Elvis Costello started his career as an angry young punk rocker, his style has evolved and changed throughout his long career. In late 1996, Elvis Costello broke up his long time band The Attractions due to tensions between himself and bassist Bruce Thomas. He spent time over the next two years working in collaboration with Burt Bacharach. Costello had long been a fan of Bacharach, and even recorded his song, I'll Never Fall In love Again, for the 2nd Austin Powers movie. The duo released the album Painted From Memory in 1998, and even played a limited series of intimate live performances in support of the disc. After concluding the shows with Bacharach, Costello decided to continue to play a similar style of concert, and recruited long time keyboardist, Steve Nieve to accompany him on tour. The two embarked on The Lonely World Tour in early 1999. This soundboard captures Costello and Nieve on June 16, 1999, 15 years ago today, in Toronto. Amnesty International - 1986-06-15 - East Rutherford, NJ (FM)

In 1986, Amnesty International celebrated its 25th anniversary of fighting for human rights across the globe. To help raise awareness of the agency’s work, artists as diverse as U2, The Police, Peter Gabriel, Lou Reed, Bryan Adams, Joan Baez and thr Neville Brothers, banded together for a series of 6 concerts in June of that year. To provide some perspective on how important these shows were to the performers involved, The Police reunited for the last 3 shows of the tour after not playing live in over 2 years, then wouldn’t tour again until 2007! This FM broadcast captures the final show at Giants Stadium show on July 15, 1986, 28 years ago today, a sold-out, all-day event, running from noon until 11 pm. In addition to the 6 featured acts, the Giant Stadium show included such performers as Third World, Jackson Browne, Max Weinberg, Peter Paul & Mary, The Hooters, Stanley Jordan, Miles Davis, Little Steven, Howard Jones, and Joni Mitchell. The performers featured songs about politics, freedom and courage, including anthems such as Sun City, Invisible Sun, Sunday Bloody Sunday, and I Shall Be released. MTv televised the entire concert, while Westwood One handled the national radio broadcast. Of course, while the concert was a spectacular musical event, the question remained as to whether it had achieved its intended purpose. The answer appeared to be a solid yes, as about after tour concluded, US membership in Amnesty International increased by 45,000, while letters written by concert goers led to the release of 2 political prisoners of conscience.

Note: Bruce is connected to every band that played on June 15, 1986 since he headlined an Amnesty International tour 2 years later in 1988. Since I do have a life outside this blog and don’t have unlimited time, I decided to only write about his connections to U2 as those are among the most interesting. 

U2/Bruce Springsteen Connections

• On September 25, 1987, Little Steven (that’s Miami Steve of Bruce’s E-Street band) and The Disciples of Soul opened for U2 at JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. Later that day, Bruce, who was on hand to see his old friend Miami Steve perform, joined U2 during their set for a rendition of Stand By Me.
• At a 2011 concert at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey, Bono ended U2’s set by reciting the lyrics to Jungeland as a tribute to the late great Clarence Clemons, Bruce’s long time friend and sax player. •
• U2’s Bono inducted Springsteen into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, If you get a chance, listen to that speech. If you’re ever lucky enough to be inducted into something, you want Bono to be the guy to do it!
• In 2005, Bruce returned the favor, inducting U2 into the Rock Hall. 
• Both Bruce and Bono backed Paul McCartney on Let It Be during the 1999 Rock & Roll Hall of fame induction ceremonies. 
• Springsteen and U2 both played the 25th Anniversary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame concert at Madison Square Garden in October 2009. Bruce closed night 1 on October 29, while U2 closed night 2 on October 30. Bruce stopped by on night 2 during U2’s set to play Because The Night and I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.

Southside Johnny - 1977-06-14 - Bottom Line, NY (FM)

When Bruce Springsteen took the rock world by storm in 1975, he opened the door for other Jersey Shore acts to try to hit the big time.  Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes are probably the 2nd best known band from that era.  Their first three albums, I Don't Want To Go Home (1976), This Time It's For Real (1977), and Hearts Of Stone (1978), were filled with Stax R&B influences.  All 3 discs were produced and arranged by Steve Van Zandt, the group's co-founder, who also played guitar in Springsteen's E Street band.  Van Zandt's tune, I Don't Want To Go Home, became Southside's signature song, an evocative mixture of horn-based melodic riffs and sentimental lyrics. The band's repertoire also included The Fever, Talk to Me, This Time It's For Real, Love on the Wrong Side of Town, a wonderful cover of Sam Cooke's Having A Party, and the definitive version of Springsteen's Hearts of Stone.  Unfortunately, Van Zandt left the band in 1979, and they never did achieve national prominence.  That said, Southside and the Jukes have always been fantastic live performers, as evidenced in this FM Broadcast of their show at the Bottom Line on June 14, 1977, 37 years ago today.  Legendary R&B singer Ronnie Spector joins the band for several songs, making this a classic performance you should add to your collection.  By the way - this is not the same show as the officially released "Live at The Bottom Line" album.  That one took place several months earlier in October 1976.  So this performance is a-ok to post for your enjoyment!

Southside Johnny/Bruce Springsteen Connections

• As mentioned above, Miami Steve Van Zandt of Bruce’s E-Street band was also a cofounder, along with Johnny Lyon, of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Van Zandt served as the band’s guitarist, songwriter, arranger and producer. 
• As mentioned in an earlier post this month, Southside Johnny played as part of Bruce’s Dr Zoom && The Sonic Boom band. 
• Southside has been a guest at several of Bruce’s holiday shows, including ones in 2000, 2001, and 2003.
• Both Bruce and Southside joined Jon Bon Jovi at a January 31, 1998 benefit show for Patrick King, a Long Beach NJ police officer killed in the line of duty.
• Southside and Miami Steve have done several charity concerts together, including 2 found on tis blog - a November 11, 1987 concert for Missing Children and a November 21, 1993 show for Hungerthon. 
• Basically, the sage of the Jersey Shore sound can’t be written without constantly referring to the connections between Bruce and other members of that scene such as Southside Johnny.

Bruce Hornsby - 1990-06-14 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD or HQ Audience)

In July 1990, Bruce Hornsby released his last album with The Range, entitled A Night On The Town. The disc went to #20 on the Billboard charts, and featured contributions from Jerry Garcia on Barren Ground and Across The River. Less than 3 months later, Hornsby would join Garcia as part of the Grateful Dead in the wake of keyboardist Brent Mydland’s death due to a drug overdose. Just 2 weeks before A Night On The Town hit stores, Hornsby gave a preview concert in Los Angeles on June 14, 1990, 2 dozen years ago today. Those in attendance got to see a guest appearance by Garcia, who joined Hornsby for live renditions of Barren Ground and Across The River.

• At Springsteen’s December 7 and 8, 2001 Holiday shows in Asbury Park, NJ, Hornsby joined the Boss on stage. Hornsby played Spider Fingers and End of the Innocence, then later in the show sang a duet with Springsteen on You Sexy Thing!
• Both Hornsby and Springsteen have played Buddy Holly’s Not Fade Away as part of their live shows. 
• Hornsby joined Springsteen on stage on November 11, 2005 at Old Dominion University to play Across the Border.

In February 2004, Elton John took up residence at the Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas for a nightly show entitled The Red Piano. Elton originally was slated to perform 25 shows a year at Caesar’s over 3 years, but wound up doing over 40 shows annually from 2003 through 2008, before ending the run with around 20 Las Vegas performances in 2009. After closing the Red Piano, Elton played numerous Face To face shows with Billy Joel, as well as embarking on his own tour. Unlike the Red Piano shows which only featured 15 songs, the set lists during his 2009 tour encompassed anywhere from 25 to 30 tunes each night. Allman Brothers Band - 1992-06-11 - Los Angeles CA (SBD)

As the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard recording captures the Allmans doing an acoustic set on June 11, 1992, 22 years ago today, in Los Angeles as part of a benefit show for the IRSA. And if anybody knows what the IRSA is, please leave a comment below!

Allman Brothers/Bruce Springsteen Connections

• Bruce was a fan of the Allman’s original lineup, especially of the 2 guitar, 2 drummer format of the band. He had an opportunity in March 1971 to open for the Allmans but had just recently disbanded his group, Steel Mill. For the gig, therefore, Bruce formed an impromptu band, initially called Bruce Springsteen & the Friendly Enemies, but quickly renamed Dr. Zoom & The Sonic Boom. The band not only had 2 guitarists and 2 drummers like the Allmans, but also 2 keyboard players and 2 saxophone players. Zoom & Boom would only last 4 gigs, but many of the band members be part of Bruce’s future endeavors, including Steve van Zandt, David Sancious, Garry Tallent, Southside Johnny and Vini Lopez.
• Legend has it that Springsteen tried to get into the Allmans’ dressing room during those March 1971 gigs, but was thrown out by none other than Duane Allman himself. 
• For some reason, many listeners believed that Greg Allman’s 1989 solo hit, I’m No Angel, was actually a tune sung by Bruce Springsteen (I have no idea why - I most certainly don’t hear the similarities!).
