I've only seen the Neville Brothers live in concert on one occasion - on July 10, 1989 when they sat in during the 2nd set with the Grateful Dead! My seats were so far away from the stage that I initially thought the folks who joined the Dead on stage that night were Los Lobos, who had led in. Only when I read the concert review in the paper the next day did I learn it was the Nevilles!

This soundboard recording captures the Neville Brothers some 4 years after I saw them, in Virginia, on August 9, 1993, 33 years ago today.

Neville Brothers Live - Re-Post Folder

In our continuing series of folders containing re-posts of shows previously shared on this blog, today, at the request of a dear friend of mine, we bring you a folder of The Neville Brothers.

Grab them while you can as due to space limitations this folder can't stay up forever. That said, please don't hammer the folder as that will set off alarm bells and may get it taken down by Mega. Grab a few shows each day, the come back for more the following day.

Enjoy the tunz!

PS: The re-post folders for Marshall Crenshaw, SNL, America, the Beach Boys, and BS&T are still up.  Just go here, scroll down to find the re-post folder you're looking for, and a new link will be availbe on that post.  And then go here to discover a host of other prior re-posts and how to find them!

* with the Neville Brothers

On September 3, 1977, I attended my first Grateful Dead concert - me, my buddies and 150,000 others at Englishtown NJ, the largest concert in the state's history. The day was hot - over 100 degrees - and the band was even hotter. Another performance that added to the legend of 1977. I would see 49 more after that, at least 1 show every year except 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1992, with the last show being June 18, 1995, just 2 month's before we lost Jerry Garcia. My long strange trip with the Dead was short compared to folks who saw hundreds of concerts, but it was memorable, as a dozen shows that I attended were good enough to be officially released. It's been 27 years since we lost Jerry, and I still miss the magic.

This soundboard recording captures the band in Pittsburgh on July 6 1987, 35 years ago today. I saw the band 8 times in 1987 and its one of my favorite years for a couple reasons, First, that's the year of my favorite all time Dead show, September 18, 1987 at Madison Square Garden, which can be found on the 30 Trips Around The Sun box set, Second, having thought we lost Jerry in 1986, when he fell into a diabetic coma, every show in 1987 was an outpouring of love. We were just so happy he was back on stage, making the music he, and we, all loved. Love is real, not fade away!

The Neville Brothers are one of many bands that I learned about through my affinity for the Grateful Dead. The Dead played both Iko Iko and Hey Pocky Way in concert, 2 tunes often found in the Neville's repertoire. This soundboard captures the Nevilles in Boulder, CO on April 18 2008. 11 years ago today.
