In addition to seeing Neil with CSNY in April 2000, I've seen him on 5 other occasions, 3 solo acoustic shows (1989, 1992 and 199), and 2 concerts with Crazy Horse, in Godfather of Grunge mode in 1991 and a presentation of Greendale in 2004. You never quite knew what you would get when you went to see Mr. Young.

Speaking of Crazy Horse, in 1996, Neil Young reunited with on again, off again backing band to record the album Broken Arrow. Filled with hard edged tunes featuring extended jams, Broken Arrow was another in a sting of albums that featured Neil’s electric side. In fact the only album in that decade that highlighted his acoustic folk tunes was Harvest Moon in 1992. Otherwise in the 1990’s, Neil was working with The Horse, Pearl Jam, and Sonic Youth to test just how loud he could play and how much feedback he could generate. Neil and Crazy Horse went on the road support of Broken Arrow including headlining the 1997 HORDE Tour, a fitting role for the man nicknamed the Godfather of Grunge. as npted above. This soundboard captures Neil on August 10, 1997, 17 years ago today in Saratoga. Download this one, and be sure to turn it up loud when you listen!

Like the Allman Brothers who we discussed yesterday, Neil Young was another member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1995, which featured the induction of Led Zeppelin. For Neil, it was his second induction, the first having come two years earlier as a member of Buffalo Springfield.

This excellent audience recording captures Neil 4 years after that 2nd induction, in New York on April 219, 1999, 27 years ago today.  I saw Neil 3 nights later at the same venue - a superb solo acoustic show!

1990s - #5: On September 22, 1985, Neil Young, Willie Nelson & John Mellencamp, inspired by Bob Dylan's pleas at Live Aid to help the family farmer in America, launched Farm Aid intending to do just that! That first concert, which was held at the University of Illinois, attracted 80,000 fans and raised over $9 million. Over the past 4 decades, the effort has raised well over $75 million to help America's family farms while also serving a a key organization to raise awareness of the importance and plight of those farmers. This TV SBD recording captures highlights from Farm Aid 1992, held in Texas, on March 14, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today. The line up is filled with rock and roll hall of famers, including the 3 founders!

Neil 1991 - Back To Back - #1:  In late 1990, Neil Young released his 20th studio album, and 6th back by Crazy Horse, entitled Ragged Glory. The album's garage rock sound earned Neil the honorary title of "Godfather of Grunge".  The disc went to #31 on the Billboard Charts and earned outstanding critcal reviews. Kurt Loder, for example, called the album a "great one", which was a "a monument to the spirit of the garage - to the pursuit of passion over precision".  In addition, the Village Voice ranked it as the album of the year in its annual poll.  In early 1991, Neil and the Horse went on tour in support of Ragged Glory.  This soundboard recording captures them in Buffalo on February 16, 1991, 35 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set

Over the years I've seen Neil 6 times - 3 acoustic shows, 2 electric shows and once with CSNY. I've seen him play quiet, heartfelt,, spare renditions of his tunes, and I've seen him stomp around, backed by Crazy Horse, like a man possessed, living up to his nickname as the Godfather of Grunge. I've seen him perform the rock opera Greendale and I've seen him help turbo charge his on again, off again band mates Crosby, Stills and Nash. No matter what, one thing remained constant in all these performances - Neil stays true to himself and plays what moves him at the moment.

This excellent audience recording captures Neil just a few months after I saw him live for the first time, doing an acoustic show in the Netherlands on December 13, 1989, 3 dozen years ago today.

Neil 1986 - Back To Back - #1: Neil Young, unlike The Who, The Stones and Pink Floyd,  didn’t vanish for a good chuck of the 1980s - it only seemed that way! In 1979, Neil was at the top of the rock world, as he was honored as artist of the year for his album Rust Never Sleeps. The disc, which is clearly some of Neil's finest work, was also recognized as album of the year. Yet, on the heels of that masterpiece, Neil would enter one of the least productive periods of his career. To put it mildly, the early 1980's were not the best of times musically for Neil Young. After signing on with Geffen Records, he released a series of albums that were baffling to fans and critics alike. From Trans in 1982, an experiment in electronic music, to Everybody's Rockin' in 1983, a rockabilly album with the Shocking Pinks, to Old Ways in 1985, a country music disc, Neil's run of releases were hardly the stuff folks had come to know and love. In fact, his own record label sued him for making music that was "unrepresentative of himself". By late 1986, Neil finally began to emerge from this experimental stage of his career, reuniting with Crazy Horse for Live In A Rusted Out Garage tour. With the Horse at his side, Neil again was stomping around on stage, playing the fierce, ragged, searing music that had become his hallmark, as evidenced in this soundboard recording from Minneapolis from October 17 1986, 39 years ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Note - while the sound quality is generally excellent, some extraneous noise can be heard during Neil's set. You see, he decided to play his songs in a chicken coop in a farm, so you can occaisionally hear the hens clucking!!

Today we bring you highlights of the first Farm Aid, held in Champaign, IL, 4 decades ago today.  We've used AM, FM and TV soundboard sources to bring you as much of the show as possible, so many artists that I couldn't list them all in the labels accompanying the post.  We even have Bob Dylan's appearance alongsideTom Petty.  It was, of course, Dylan's somewhat controversial comments at Live Aid that prompted Neil Young, Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp to embark on this 40 year old venture known as Farm Aid that has raised almost $80 million to supoport the American family farmer.  You can donate here.
