When Elvis Costello burst on the scene in the late 1970’s, he quickly too his place as one of the 3 Angry Men of rock, along with Graham Parker and Joe Jackson. His first 2 albums, My Aim Is True and This Year’s Model, may be one of the best one-two punches ever thrown by a new artist. Both albums, which were produced by Nick Lowe of Rockpile fame, cracked the top 40 on the Billboard album charts, and received extensive critical praise. In 2003, Rolling Stone included My Aim is True and This Year’s Model in their list of the Top 500 albums of all time, with the former ranked #168 and the latter at #98. Elvis toured relentlessly in early 1978 in support of both albums, for the most part playing small clubs and college campuses. This FM broadcast captures him in St.Louis on January 31, 1978, 42 years ago today.

Marshal Crenshaw - 1990-01-30 - Philadelphia PA (SBD)

In 1989, Marshall Crenshaw released his 5th studio album, entitled Good Evening.  As has been the case throughout most of his career, the album received strong critical reviews, but failed to generate much commercial interest. Robert Christgau, the fabled rock critic who called Crensahaw's first 2 discs "perfect", gave Good Evening an A minus rating, commenting that "not since the debut has he sounded so at ease, so himself." The album featured Sonny Landreth, Graham Maby, David Lindley, James Burton and the Bodeans backing Crenshaw, yet neither strong reviews nor a strong supporting cast was enough, unfortunately, to drive sales. Nonetheless, Crenshaw went on tour in support of the album in early 1990. This soundboard recording captures him in Philadelphia on January 30, 1990. 3 decades ago this very day.  Note some sources claim this show took place on February 7 or February 15, but the source that provided the this recording believes January 30 is the correct date.

Bob Dylan launched the 1999 edition of his Never Ending tour in January, the first of 5 legs that would take him across North America and into Europe.  All in all that year, he would perform 119 shows, including a 38 show stint in the summer where he partnered with Paul Simon and another 26 shows in the fall where he toured with Phil Lesh & Friends. This soundboard recording captures him on night 3 of the first leg of the tour, in Daytona Beach on January 29, 1999, 21 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band - 1992-01-28 - Sapporo, Japan (SBD)

As the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Woody, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard recording captures the Allmans in Japan on January 28, 1992, 28 years ago today, during their early 1990s comeback!

Plant & Page - 1996-01-27 - Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (SBD)

After Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 in the wake of the death of drummer John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page each pursued other musical interests. In 1994, however, all that changed MTc approached Robert Plant to do an episode of the then wildly popular Unplugged series. Plant, not wanting to carry the banner of Led Zep's legacy alone, asked Page to join him. The passage of time seemed to heal any wounds from the past, and the duo again felt the musical connection that had made them rock legends. They taped the episode on August 25 and 26, pairing Led Zep classics with 4 new tunes. The show aired on October 12 to such an enthusiastic response that they not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded but also agreed to tour in 1995. The tour lasted over a year, finishing up in early 1996 with a series of shows in Asia and Australia. This soundboard recording captures the duo near the end of that historic tour in Brazil, on January 27, 1996, 2 dozen years ago today.

Traffic - 1973-01-26 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

When Traffic arrived at Winterland in San Francisco, CA on January 26, 1973, 47 years ago today, it was just about a week prior to the release of their 6th studio album, Shoot Out At The Fantasy Factory. While reviews of the disc weren't all that kind, it still climbed to #6 on the Billboard album charts. The band was also in the process of taping concerts for an eventual live album, which would be entitled On The Road. As such, they augmented their 3 piece line up with 3 members of the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. The MSR had provided backing on some of the greatest rock and R&B hits of the 1960s and '70s, including many classic Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield records. • If you are rude in your request, you're getting no response.  
• If you go through a bunch of posts and simply comment "Dead Link", you are not getting a response
• Also, I will no longer take re-post requests from Anonymous users. Most of the time, the issues outlined above are caused by folks who are Anonymous, so unless you have some kind of identity (such as Speedy, or Wolfclan or AZ Jones, or PigStreet, etc), I won't be honoring the request. Leon Russell - 1985-01-25 - Passaic, NJ (SBD)

Leon Russell rose to prominence in the early 1970s with a string of accomplishments that any artist would envy.  In early 1970, he organized the backing band for Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs & Englishmen tour, which included himself as well as host of musicians who had supported Delaney and Bonnie during their 1969/1970 tour. He also released his self titled solo album which included the first recording of what would become his signature tune, A Song for You. That song has since been covered by more than 40 different artists including the Carpenters, Ray Charles, Peggy Lee, Willie Nelson, Helen Reddy, Whitney Houston, Donny Hathaway, and Christina Aguilera. Also in 1970, Russell played piano on Dave Mason's album, Alone Together, most notably on the song Sad and Deep as You. In March 1971, he produced some tracks for Bob Dylan in including Watching the River Flow and When I Paint My Masterpiece., both of which prominently featured Russell's gospel-flavored piano. In August, he played a set as part of George Harrison's Concert For Bangladesh. He also played on Badfinger's album Straight Up, including piano on the band's hit single, Day After Day. On top of all that, Russell released 2 albums in 1971 - Leon Russell & The Shelter People in May and Asylum Choir II in November.  This soundboard recording captures him some 15 years later, at the Capitol Theater in Passaic NY, on January 25, 1985, 35 years ago today.  By the way, also on the bill that night were Kingfish and Jorma Kaukonen - if anyone has those show, I'd love to get my hands on them!

Bob Weir - 1991-01-24 - Tempe AZ (SBD)

During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day,  Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros.  This FM broadcast captures Weir & Wassermann in their early days, on January 24, 1991, 29 years ago today, in  Tempe.

When U2 took the stage in their home country of Ireland on January 23, 1983, 37 years ago today as captured in this FM Broadcast, it had been just 3 months since the release of their debut album, Boy. The single from the album, I Will Follow, was the first by the band to receive extensive airplay in the US.  The tune was popular in dance clubs across the US, an hardly foreshadowed the more serious, political tone of their future music, nor their rise to become one of the most significant rock bands of the latter portion of the 20th century!

Joe Jackson - 1983-01-22 - Hitchin UK (FM)

In June 1982, Joe Jackson, the angry punk rocker, surprised fans and critics alike when he released the album Night and Day. The disc paid tribute to the wit and wisdom of Cole Porter, and was far more piano driven than earlier albums such as Look Sharp and I'm The Man. The album went to #4 on the US charts, making it his only album to crack the top 5. The single Stepping Out, reached #6, and earned Jackson Grammy Nominations for Record of The Year and Best Male Vocalist. This FM broadcast from Hitchin from January 22, 1983, 75 years ago today, captures Jackson on tour in support of the Night and Day album.

Los Lobos - 1998-01-21 - Venura, CA (SBD)

Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos was dropped by Warner records. The  band by the way, had not been resting on their laurels.  In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite.  Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. While working on a new record deal, Los Lobos did what they do best - go on the road and play concerts.  This soundboard recording captures the band in Ventura  on January 21, 1998, 22 years ago today.

Powered by the dynamic husband and wife duo of Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi, the band, which formed into 2010, won a Grammy for best blues album for their debut disc, Revelator, in 2011. Their follow up disc, Everybody’s Talking, was a live album released in 2012 that featured their unique take on a host of cover tunes, such as the title track. In 2013, they released their 2nd studio album, Made Up Mind, which climbed to #11 on the Billboard album charts. Then in January 2016, they released their 3rd studio album, Let Me Get By, which would eventually climb to #15 on the charts. Cleveland often gets a bad rap as a city, but it’s the home of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, so it can't be that bad. In any event, this post features Steve Winwood in Celeveland during his critically acclaimed and commercially successful Back in The High Life Tour. This FM Broadcast, from January 18, 1987, 33 years ago today, captures Winwood  playing a mix of tunes from latest solo album along with some of his best known songs from his days Traffic and The Spencer Davis Group. One note though – this whole show is one single track. I’m not that good at splitting tracks, so if anyone would be kind enough to do that, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Concerts For The Clinton Inauguration - 1993-01-17 - Washington DC (SBD)

He was dubbed the Rock & Roll President, which later became the title of a 1997 MTV documentary about his life.  He played saxophone on the Arsenio Hall show during his campaign for the Oval Office. He used Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow)" as his campaign theme song. Bill Clinton, the first baby boomer president, once thought of becoming a musician before life led him in a vastly different direction.  So, its hardly surprising that his inauguration on January 7, 1993, 27 years ago, today featured a veritable who's who of rock legends. This soundboard recording captures shows on the National Mall and at The National Building Museum celebrating the start of the Clinton presidency, featuring Bob Weir, The Band, Clarence Clmeons Stephen Still, Bob Dylan and a host of other rock legends.

The Byrds - 1991-01-16 - New York, NY (SBD)

On January 16, 1991, 29 years ago today, the 5 original Byrds - Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Michael Clarke and Chris Hillman –  put aside years of personal and financial disputes to reunite at the Waldorf Astoria for the band's induction onto the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This soundboard recording captures their performance that night, which sadly, it would be the last time the 5 original line up ever played together. Both Michael Clarke and Gene Clarke would pass away within the next 2 years. Of course, while those induction ceremonies closed some wounds, it opened others, as long time Byrds members such as Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, just to name 3, were completely ignored by the Rock Hall of Fame.  Note - the sound on this is a bit below our normal standards but its such a historic moment we had to post it!

The Pretenders - 1982-01-15 - New York, NY (FM)

In August 1981, the Pretenders released their 2nd album simply and appropriately titled, Pretenders II. The disc went to #10 on the Billboard charts and featured such tunes as Message Of Love, Talk Of The Town and The Adulteress.  It would be the last album recorded by the original Pretenders line up, as drug overdoes claimed the lives guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon iover the next 2 years.  This FM broadcast captures The Pretenders on tour in support of their 2nd album, on New York at The Riytz on January 15, 1982, 38 years ago today,

Elton John - 1998-01-14 - Paris, France (SBD)

On September 27, 1997, Elton John released the album The Big Picture, his 26th studio album at that point in his career. The album was dedicated to Elton John’s friend, popular fashion designer Gianni Versace, who was murdered a few months before the album's release. The album did well commercially, reaching #9 in the US on the Billboard charts and climbing all the way to #3 in the UK. Despite that success, Elton’s long time friend and lyricist Bernie Taupin, considered this disc his least favorite of all their collaborations. Within days of the album’s launch, Elton took to the road in support of the disc. The Big Picture tour began on October 8, 1997 in Atlanta and ran all the way through the end of 1998, with a few brief interruptions in March, May and June so Elton could perform with Bill Joel as part of their Face to Face tour. This soundboard recording captures Elton playing a solo show in Paris on January 14, 1998, 22 years ago today, as a warm up before returning to the US to continue the Big Picture tour.

Neil Young - 1989-01-13 - Tulsa, OK (SBD)

Neil Young has always been a man who marched to the beat of his own drummer. Just take a look a the years 1988 to 1990 for a perfect example. In 1988, Neil briefly reunited with Crosby, Stills and Nash to record the album American Dream, but he chose not to tour with his sometime band mates. The next year, he recorded the solo album Freedom, a disc which included several songs featuring the heavy use of feedback and distortion. In 1990, he was back with Crazy Horse, recording the album Ragged Glory, an album similar to Freedom in its use of distortion. Those 2 discs foreshadowed the rise of grunge, with musicians such as Nirvana's Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder, citing Young as a major influence. So while Neil was in the studio making music with CSNY and Crazy Horse, what was he doing on stage? What else but touring with an entirely different band, The Restless, comprised of Ben Keith, Frank Sampedro, Rick Rosas and Chad Cromwell.  This soundboard recording captures Neil & The Restless on January 13, 1989, 31 years ago today, in Tulsa. the 3rd night of the tour.

Blondie - 1980-01-12 - London, UK (FM)

In October 1979, Blondie released Eat to the Beat, the follow up album to the critically acclaimed disc Parallel Lines.  While not quite as commercially successful as its predecessor, Eat To The Beat was certified Platinum in the United States, spent a year on the Billboard charts. and reached  #17.The disc climbed all the way to #1 on the charts in the UK. Blondie also released a video version of the album, featuring a music video for all 12 tracks, the first time a band had ever attempted such a project.  This FM broadcast captures Blondie in London on tour in support of Eat To The Beat, on January 12, 1980, 4 decades ago today.

Grand Funk Railroad - 1982-01-11 - Cleveland, OH (FM)

After a string of hits, such as We're An American Band and Locomotion, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Grand Funk Railroad broke up in 1976, with the 3 original members - Mark Farner, Don Brewer and Mel Schnacher - going their separate ways. In 1981, Farner and Brewer reunited as Grand Funk Railroad, recording the album Grand Funk Lives.  The band went on tour in support of the new disc in 1982.  This FM broadcast captures Grand Funk dung that reunion tour, in Cleveland on January 11, 1982, 38 years ago today.

Spin Doctors - 1990-01-10 - New York, NY (SBD)

In August 1991, the Spin Doctors released their debut album Pocket Full Of Kryptonite, but it barely received any commercial or critical notice. It took almost a year before folks picked up on the album, bolstered by MTv playing videos of Two Princes and Little Miss Can't be Wrong. Sales suddenly took off, with the album certifying gold by September 1992, and reaching triple platinum status by June 1993. The disc peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts, and the 2 singles mentioned previously both cracked the top 20.  By the way, the album got its title from a line from its opening track, Jimmy Olsen's Blues, which didn't chart when originally r;eased, but eventually cracked the Billboard Top 100 as after the band's big commercial breakthrough. This soundboard recording captures the band at one of their favorite  venues, Wetlands, about 2 years prior to their commercial breakthrough, in January 10, 1990, 3 decades ago this very day.

The Runaways - 1978-01-07 - Palladium, NY (FM)

In the mid 1970’s, 5 young women – Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Sandy West, Cherie Currie and Micki Steele (later replaced by Peggy Foster and then Jackie Fox) – formed a band and the rest as they say, is history. Punk and Heavy Metal were two emerging trends in the mid 70s, and The Runaways proved that those genres were not the exclusive domain of the boys of rock and roll. They released their first album in 1976, then headlined shows with opening acts such as Cheap Trick, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and Van Halen. In the summer of 1977 the group arrived in Japan for a string of sold out shows. At the time, the only bands selling more albums in Japan than the Runaways were ABBA, Kiss and Led Zeppelin. They were mobbed by fans on their visit, and Joan Jett later described the mass hysteria as being like Beatlemania. This FM Broadcast captures the band a few months after their triumphant visit to Japan, on January 7, 1978, 42 years ago today at the Palladium in New York. By that point, Currie had left the band, and tensions were rising between the other members. In addition, while The Runaways were huger overseas, they had yet to breakthrough in the US. In just about a year, the band would break up, due to creative differences between Jett, who wanted the band to play more punk and new wave music, and Ford, who pushed to steer the group more toward hard rock and heavy metal. Download this show, therefore, to catch the Runaways at their peak, and get a glimpse at what Joan Jett and Lita Ford sounded like before their highly successful solo careers.
