EC 1985 - Back To Back - #1: For Eric Clapton, 1985 was a year in which he returned to worldwide prominence. Working with Phi Collins, he released the album, Behind The Sun, in March 1985, which was a huge improvement of his previous effort, 1983’s Money and Cigarettes. It was also his first album after spending time in rehab for his addiction to alcohol. Fueled by the single Forever Man, which received extensive play both on radio and on MTV, Behind The Sun climbed into the top 40 on the Billboard charts. The album also yielded the single, She's Waiting, which was included as part of EC’s set at Live Aid in July 1985. That Live Aid appearance, which also included White Room and Layla, showed the world a healthy and rejuvenated Slowhand, who could still play with the best of them. This soundboard captures EC on July 17, 1985, 41 years ago today, in Los Angeles on toour in support of Behind The Sun. EC 1974 - Back To Back - #1: The year 1974 marked EC's triumphant return to the top of the rock world. After playing at the Rainbow Concert in January 1973, Clapton worked to kick his heroin addiction and finally was united with long time love Patti Boyd, who had been the inspiration for Layla. He recorded the album 461 Ocean Blvd in the spring of 1974. The disc would go to #1 on the Billboard charts after its release, as would the single from the disc, I Shot The Sheriff. EC went on the road in support of the album in June 1974, his first tour since 1970. Throughout this tour, Clapton would often sound a bit sloshed, as a new demon had replaced his addiction to heroin, namely a growing dependency on alcohol. This soundboard recording captures EC during that comeback tour, at Madison Square Garden in NY on July 13, 1974, 52 years ago today. I saw EC twice in concert, both times at Madison Square Garden. The first was in April 1987, one of the best shows I've ever attended and then again in April 1990. The 1987 show was actually taped for a live album, but that project was shelved and it was never released. I saw Steve Winwood for the first and only time (so far) in Morristown on September 24, 2025. Incredibly fortunate to catch him at a theater that seats just 1000 people! He played all the tunes expected from his solo career, and stints with the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith. By the way, I got to hear both EC and Winwood play Can't Find My Way home live!

What I haven't seen unfortunately, is Clapton and Winwood on stage together.  They first collaborated, of course, in Blind Faith way back in 1969.  In the early 21st century, they joined forces once again after almost 4 decades, playing together in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011.  This excellent audeince recording captures the duo in Belgrade on June 2, 2010, 16 years ago today.

Eric Clapton is the only person inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame on 3 different occasions - as a member of the Yardbirds in 1992, then with Cream in 1993 and finally as a solo artist in 2000. By the way, he was also a member of Derek & the Dominoes, Blind Faith and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers (Mayall is in, the band isn't), three other bands that deserve Rock Hall consideration!

This IEM matrix recording captures Eric on stage in Tokyo on April 14, 2025, just a year ago today, just about two weeks after his 80th birthday!!

Here's our 4th post of the day, containing parts 7, 8 and 9 of the 2007 Crossroads Festival, from July 28, 2007, 18 years ago this very day. First, Jeff Beck plays a sensational set, including a stunning reinvention of the Beatles’ A Day in the Life, in which he recreates all the elaborate vocal melodies and orchestrations with little more than the six strings of his guitar. Then, EC himself took the stage, for a set heavy on music from Derek and the Dominos. Derek Trucks sat in for the entire set, helping to push Clapton to be at his best. EC also got some help from Robbie Robertson for 2 songs, before reuniting with Blind Faith compatriot, Steve Winwood! And how fitting that they end their set with Crossroads! After that, Chicago blues Buddy Guy took the stage followed a 3 song finale featuring all the day's performers! A veritable legion of Guitar Gods all on stage at once!

Live Aid - 1985-07-13 - London, UK & Philadelphia, PA (Part  3) (FM)

Welcome to our 3rd and final post of the FM Broadcast of Live Aid from July 13, 1985, 4 decades  ago today.  This post features the finales at both Wembley and JFK. In London, Paul McCartney played Let It Be, but was not joined on stage by George and Ringo, despite a flurry of rumors. In fact, at one point, when Geldorf and Bowie walked on stage to sing back up for Paul, an announcer briefly yelled "there will be a reunion" before quickly correcting himself! Wembley closed with a rendition of Do You Know Its Christmas by all the performers, after which Sir Paul and Pete Towshend triumphantly hoisted Geldorf up on their shoulders. At JFK, the final acts included Eric Clapton making a triumphant return to the world stage; Phil Collins arriving from London via the Concorde to play a solo set, then playing drums for a reunion of the 3 surviving members of Led Zeppelin; and a solo set by Neil Young followed by his reunion by Crosby, Stills, and Nash. With Mick Jagger and Keith Richards feuding at the time, the Rolling Stones did not appear. Instead, Jagger played with Tina Tuner, while Richards and fellow Rolling Stone, Ron Wood, backed Bob Dylan, the last performer at JFK. Dylan stirred controversy with his remarks about redirecting some of the money to US farmers, which would lead to the first Farm Aid concerts. Live Aid ended with the all star finale at JFK playing We Are the World, the US song written for the event. An amazing and memorable day! I watched and listened to all of it, and had dozens of Maxell tapes of the show. Now we all have a digital recording of one of the most memorable events in rock history, an event that truly showed the power of rock music to make a difference. After a highly successful tour in 1985, including a triumphant appearance at Live Aid, Eric Clapton took most of 1986 off. The few shows he did play, however, featured a brand new band. Whereas in 1985, 6 or 7 band members backed EC, the 1986 group featured only 3 other musicians - Nathan East on bass, Greg Phillinganes on keyboards and Phil Collins on Drums. Collins also served as the producer for Clapton’s latest album August, which he released on November 24, 1986. This sounboard recording features EC's new 4 piece band, at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, on July 10, 1986, 39 years ago today.

The Silver Clef Award Winners Concert  - 1990-06-30 - Knebworth, UK (SBD)

Knebworth House in England, an estate from the 15th century, has been the site of major rock festivals since 1974 (go here for more info) when the Allman Brothers drew a crowd of 60,000.  In 1979, Led Zeppelin made their return two live performing with 2 concerts at Knebworth. The Rolling Stones, Queen, Genesis and Van Morrison, as well as dozens of other rock acts, also have graced the stage at Knebworth. On June 30, 1990, 35 years ago today, Knebworth hosted the Silver Clef Awards for outstanding contributions to music in the UK, resulting in an incredible star studded line up, including Eric Clapton, Elton John, Mark Knopfler, Pink Floyd, Robert Plant, Jimmie Page and Sir Paul McCartney. The concert was so big that it was broadcast on the radio world wide. WNEW-FM in NY carried the broadcast, and I filled several Maxell tapes with the historic performances from that show. Of course, then CD's happened, and the tapes sat in a box, as did my 2 Nakamichi tape players! Fortunately, thanks to the digital age, we now have the full FM broadcast of that historic show.

The 1980s saw a resurgence of benefit concerts/festivals where rock artists used the power of their music and popularity to spur social & political change. While Live Aid may be the best known of those efforts, it was far from the only one. On June 11, 1988, 37 years ago today as captured in this FM broadcast, Wembly Stadium hosted Freedomfest, officially know as the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute, a concert celebrating the life and sacrifices of the anti-apartheid revolutionary and freedom fighter. The show was also designed to help pressure the Apartheid government of South Africa to release him from jail. The concert featured dozens of musical acts and entertainers, including Eric Clapton, Dire Straits, Stevie Wonder, Sting, Tracy Chapman, Joe Cocker, Jackson Brown, and Steve Van Zandt (who appropriately played the song, Sun City, protesting Apartheid), just to name some. The show was broadcast live to 67 countries and an audience of over 600 million people. The political pressure Freedomfest place on South Africa had the intended results - 20 months after the show, Mandella was released from prison, having spent 27 years in jail. By 1994, apartheid ceased in South Africa, and Mandella was elected President of the country, a nation which would become a multicultural democracy under his leadership.
