1991: On October 25,1991, concert promoter Bill Graham, along with his girl friend, Melissa Gold, and pilot Steve Kahn, were killed when the helicopter Kahn was flying crashed near Vallejo, California. Love him or hate him, and there were many in both camps, Graham was a legendary figure in the music business, the man who ran both the Fillmore East and Fillmore West, as well as Winterland; who produced the Last Waltz and the US portion of Live Aid; who managed both the 1986 and 1998 Amnesty International Tours; who in conjunction with Steve Wozniak helped mastermind the creation of the Shoreline Amphitheatre; and who, was the driving force behind bringing the San Francisco sound of bands such as The Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Big Brother and The Holding Company to national prominence. It seemed only fitting , therefore, that after his tragic death, his life was honored with a free concert in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Dubbed Life, Laughter and Music, the concert for Bill, Melissa and Steve drew over 300,000 fans, all gathered to pay tribute to the man nicknamed Uncle Bobo. Rock’s royalty also turned out in honor of Graham, as the concert featured, among others, Jackson Browne, Santana, Journey, CSNY, Joan Baez, John Fogerty and the Grateful Dead. The Dead just may have been Bill’s favorite band, as he once said of them “They are not just the best at what they do, they are the only ones who do what they do”. This FM recording captures every moment of the Life Laugher and Music concert, which took place on November 3, 1991, 26 years ago today. Download this one and while you’re listening, take a moment to remember Bill, and all the joy the concerts he produced brought to millions of us around the world.
