Crossroads Guitar Festival - 2007-07-28 - Bridgeview, IL (Part 4) (SBD)

Here's our 4th post of the day, containing parts 7, 8 and 9 of the 2007 Crossroads Festival, from July 28, 2007, 18 years ago this very day. First, Jeff Beck plays a sensational set, including a stunning reinvention of the Beatles’ A Day in the Life, in which he recreates all the elaborate vocal melodies and orchestrations with little more than the six strings of his guitar. Then, EC himself took the stage, for a set heavy on music from Derek and the Dominos. Derek Trucks sat in for the entire set, helping to push Clapton to be at his best. EC also got some help from Robbie Robertson for 2 songs, before reuniting with Blind Faith compatriot, Steve Winwood! And how fitting that they end their set with Crossroads! After that, Chicago blues Buddy Guy took the stage followed a 3 song finale featuring all the day's performers! A veritable legion of Guitar Gods all on stage at once!

Each iteration of the festival features an amazing array of acts, all hand picked by Slow Hand himself! 1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 1994-01-19 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction ceremony was another marked by both wonderous moments and lingering tensions. Jerry Garcia decided to skip the Grateful Dead's induction, though the rest of the band did their best to make light of the situation by bringing along a life size cardboard cut out of their lead guitarist.  Robbie Robertson of The Band was in attendance, but Levon Helm decided not to show up due to long running issues with Robertson. Paul McCartney, who skipped The Beatles' induction in 1988 due to legal dispues with his former bandmates and Yoko Ono, was on hand to induct John Lennon, He even hugged Ono at the end of his induction speech in an emotional reconciliation. If  only McCartney had performed in tribute to Lennon, instead of the odd pairing of Bruce Springsteen and Axl Rose who played Come Together. No one in attendance will ever forget Bono's tribute to the late Bob Marley - "Showman, shaman, human, Jamaican!" Perhaps the best musical moments of the night belonged to 2 men not inducted in 1994. Jeff Beck played a moving version of People Get Ready to honor Rod Stewart, who had to miss the ceremony due to an earthquake in Los Angeles.  And Chuck Berry strutted his stuff at the age of 68 on Roll Over Beethoven, backed by  Bob Weir and Bruce Hornsby.

David Bowie - 1973-07-03 - London, UK (SBD)

1970s - #2:  On June 6, 1972, David Bowie released his 5th studio album, the now legendary The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. The album tells the story of Bowie's alter ego Ziggy Stardust, a rock star who acts as a messenger for extraterrestrial beings. The character of Ziggy also helped shapre what became know as glam rock. While the album only went to #75 on the Billboard charts at the time of release, the disc is now considered one of rock’s greatest works. Rolling Stone, for example, ranked it at #35 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time. Bowie spent a year on the road in support of the album. This soundboard  recording from July 3, 1973, a half century ago today, captures the final show of that tour, as Bowie annouced during the show that he was officially retiring the character of Ziggy.

1983 - Stricken by multiple sclerosis, Ronnie Lane, the ex-bassist for both the Small Faces and Faces, organized a charity concert the Royal Albert Hall in London on September 20, 1983, 3 dozen years ago today, to raise money to combat the disease.  The show featured a star-studded line-up of British musicians, including Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Steve Winwood, Andy Fairweather Low, Bill Wyman, Kenney Jones and Charlie Watts. Lane appeared at the end of the show to thank the audience and the musicians, then took the  vocals on the closing tune, Goodnight Irene. The concert marked the first time Clapton, Beck and Page, each a former lead guitarist for The Yardbirds, performed together on stage. Santana - 1986-06-01 - Kuruizawa, Japan (SBD)

In the summer of 1967, Carlos Santana was living in San Francisco, the epicenter of the summer of love, trying to start music career while washing dishes at the Tick Dock diner to earn a living. Carlos describes the time as follows: "The summer of 1967 was the Summer of Love in most people’s minds. (…) For me and many musicians, this was also when we started to feel that the resonance of our convictions could change the world. For me, the summer of 1967 was also the summer of decisions. One day I saw the Grateful Dead stop by the Tic Tock in a limousine. (…) I saw them from the sink where I was washing dishes and said to myself, “I shouldn’t be doing this anymore.” (…) The other decision I had to make was to finally leave home. (…) Then I dropped LSD and had a bad trip. (…) I felt like I actually gave birth to myself that day. I went from believing the world was coming to an end to figuring out what I had to do to stop that from happening. (…) I felt like that the whole experience had given me power and brought me to my purpose in life. Stan and Ron listened to me talk. They heard the conviction. “We’ll be your managers,” they said. (…) Stan said one more thing. “You have to get rid of Danny and Gus---that’s the way it is, man. They are not bad people, but they’re not committed. They’re weekend musicians; you’re not. We can tell that. We’ll drop everything for you, but you got to drop them.” (…) I knew they were right, but Danny and Gus were my oldest friends in San Francisco. Making us late at the Fillmore kind of sealed it, but if anybody was going to tell them, I would have to be the one. (…) I said good-bye to Danny and Gus, and I finally said good-bye to living with my mom and dad and moved in with Stan and Ron on Precita Avenue. That was the nest that nurtured the birth of the band. (…) That really was the beginning of Santana right there."  Two tears later, Santana would play an incendiary set at Woodstock, and the rest as they say is history.  This soundboard recording captures them almost 2 decades years after the Summer of Love, in Japan on June 1, 1986, 31 years ago today.

Stevie Ray Vaughan  - 1984-03-19 - Honolulu, HI (SBD)

In May 1984, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble released their 2nd album, entitled Couldn’t Stand The Weather. While the disc did not receive as many accolades as their debut album, Texas Flood, it still climbed to #31 on the Billboard charts. Vaughan and Double Trouble toured North America, Europe, and Australia from February through December 1984 to support Couldn't Stand the Weather.
