Joan Osborne never got to know Jerry Garcia, but she most certainly built relationships with other members of the Grateful Dead. In 2003, she toured with The Dead, adding her vocals to those of Bob Weir and Phil Lesh.  In 2005 and 2006, she continued her association with Lesh, playing numerous shows with Phil and Friends. Often times in those collaborations, she'd take lead vocal on Garcia tunes, such as Stella Blue and Sugaree.  All that time singing Garcia tunes gave her a vast appreciation for the the man's catalog of songs, his vocals, and his prowess on guitar.  So much so, that in 2022, in honor of Jerry's Birthday, she played a series of concerts where she performed his music, one of which we posted back in October 2024. 

This soundboard recording captures Joan both before  Jerry passed and she hit it big with the tune One Of Us, peforming at the legendary Stone Pony on August 20, 1993, 32 years ago today.

2020s - #3: Earlier this month, we brought you an Elvis Costello's concert where he honored the late, great, Jerry Garcia. Today, we have a soundboard recording of Joan Osborne performing a similar tribute, on October 15, 2002, just 2 years ago today.  Joan had sang many of these songs in concert as a member of The Dead in 2003 and Phil and Friends in 2006. The show had originally been scheduled for August 1, 2022, which would have been Garcia's 80th birthday, but Joan came down with Covid, so it had to be postponed.   NOTE - thanks to the blog Albums That Should Exist for the original share.

In 2003, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann launched The Dead, the successor to the Other Ones and the 2nd band formed by former members of the Grateful Dead after the death of Jerry Garcia. The Dead would play together until Spring 2009. Jimmy Herring, Rob Barraco, Joan Osborne and Warren Haynes were part of a rotating crew of musicians supporting the former GD members. This soundboard matrix recording captures The Dead during their summer tour, at Jones Beach on August 9 2003, 2 decades ago today and 8 years to the day after the death of Jerry Garcia. .

2000s - #3: In 2007, Joan Osborne released the album Breakfast In Bed, which conatianed numerous covers of soul tunes from the 1960s and 1970s, such as What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted?, alsonside 6 new original tunes, including Heart of Stone.  When she toured later that year, however, her set list did far more than simply showcase her new album, as evdienced from this soundbaord recording from Camden from July 13, 2008, 15 years ago today.  She resched back to her early days for such tunes as St. Theresa and One of Us.  She also drew upon her time with The Dead (the 2003 incarnation of the band, not the original Grateful Dead) and Phil Lesh & Friends, including Brokedown Palace in the set. Finally, she previewed her forthcoming album, Little Wild One which would be released in September 2008, playing both Cathedrals and  Hallelujah In The City? from that disc.

The disc, appropriate;l titled Songs Of Bob Dylan features Joan's take on classics such as Highway 61 Revisited and Tangled Up in Blue, as well as lesser known tracks such as Dark Eyes and Ring Them Bells. This soundboard matrix recording from May 7, 2016, 7 years ago today, captures Joan about a year before the release of that disc.  Her set list, in addition to her original tuness, included 2 tracks that would eventially appear on her Dylan album, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go and Buckets Of Rain, plus another Dylan cover that didn't make the album, Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You.

2000s - #4: While Phil Lesh took an occasional vocal during Dead concerts, he hardly seemed like the type to front a band. Yet, once the Dead officially disbanded in 1995 after Jerry Garcia's death, he did exactly that. In 1998, he began playing under the moniker Phil Lesh and Friends. Over the years, the friends have included a virtual who’s who or rock and roll, including Jorma Kaukonen, Warren Haynes, Stanley Jordan, Steve Kimock and Derek Trucks, just to name a few. This version of Phil & Friends, as captured in this soundboard recording from the Beacon Theater in New York on February 12, 2006, 17 years ago today, includes Trey Anastasio and Joan Osborne.

In 2003, she toured with The Dead, adding her vocals to those of  Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, while gaining an appreciation for the Grateful Dead's vast catalog of songs. In 2005 and 2006, she continued her association with the Lesh, playing numerous shows with Phil and Friends.  In 2009, she blended her relationships with the Dead and the Holmes Brothers, playing solo shows featuring Grateful Dead tunes while backed by the Fabulous ones. For those of you unfamiliar with The Holmes Brothers, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk."  I saw them dozens of times in small clubs in New York City in the late 1980s and was always amazed by their version of The Beatles tune “And I Love Her”,  as they totally reworked it and made it their own. This soundboard recording captures The Holmes Brothers in Portland on July 6, 2014, just 4 years ago today, backing Joan Osbourne.
