Those of you have been long time visitors to So Many Roads know that Marshall Crenshaw is one of my favorite rockers, a musician whose talents, unfortunately, have simply never been appreciated by the masses. Famed critic Robert Christgau has heaped praise on Crenshaw’s first two albums, calling them perfect - go here to read the review. Trust him - he’s knows of what he speaks! Unfortunately, I've only gotten to see Crenshaw once, at the famed Maxwell's in Hoboken back in October 1996.  I was supposed to see him for a 2nd time at the Stanhope House in March 2020, and then the pandemic hit. Live music has returned, but Crenshaws appearance in Stanhope was never rescheduled and the venue is now closed.

This WNEW-FM broadcast captures Crenshaw at The Ritz in New York on August 1, 1987, 39 years ago today. Interesting note - on bass for Marshall is Graham Maby, the same Graham Maby who played with Joe Jackson!

Marshall Crenshaw Live - Re-Post Folder

In our continuing series of folders containing re-posts of live shows previously shared on this blog, today, at the request of several long time followers of So Many Roads, we bring you a folder of Marshall Crenshaw live shows.

Grab them while you can as due to space limitations this folder can't stay up forever. That said, please don't hammer the folder as that will set off alarm bells and may get it taken down by Mega. Grab a few shows each day, the come back for more the following day.

Enjoy the tunz!

In April 1982, Marshall Crenshaw released his self-titled debut album. I bought it on the advice of a buddy, who had heard about Mr. Crenshaw on WBCN-FM while attending college at UMass. The disc went on my turntable and rarely came off! Why Crenshaw never took rock by storm is beyond me. The album has everything – catchy tunes, great hooks, excellent vocals, Beatle and Buddy Holly influences (FYI - Crenshaw played John Lennon in an off-Broadway production of Beatlemania and portrayed Buddy Holly in the movie, La Bamba). Songs such as Cynical Girl, Someday Someway, and Rocking Around in NYC get in your head, grab you and never let go. Yet, while he received critical acclaim, super stardom never followed. By the way, Crenshaw’s 2nd album, Field Day, released in June 1983, is just as good and includes the near perfect (at least I think so) Whenever You're On My Mind.  This soundboard recording captures him between the release of those 2 discs, on Soundstage, on May 2, 1983, 43 years ago today.  One note - while everything on line indicates that May 2 is the performance date of this show, I suspect it may be the broadcast date. Seems hard to believe that Crensahw would perfrom a show in May 1983, a month before a new album came out, and not include a single track from it in his set.  Either way, its a great recording!

2000s - #7: As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw, in Philadelphia on March 30, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today.

Crenshaw 1983 - Back To Back - #1: This FM broadcast captures the under rated and under appreciated Marshall Crenshaw on June 27, 1983, 41 years ago today, live in New Haven, CT. By the way, some of the notes and the artwork with this bootleg gave the date as 8-27, but a check of the official Marshall Crenshaw website revealed that he was in Los Angeles that day. He was in New Haven, CT, however, on 6-27, leading in for U2! This show features tunes from Crenshaw’s 2nd album, Field Day, including Whenever You're On My Mind, One Day With You, Monday Morning Rock, and Try. By the way, if anyone thinks that I might sing the praises of Mr. Crenshaw just a little too loudly, I ask that you read this piece by Robert Christgau, the dean of American rock critics. In that article, he calls Crenshaw's first 2 albums perfect. Download this show, see if you agree with the legendary Mr. Christgau's assessment, then stop back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back to Back set.

2000s - #5: As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw, in at the legendary Stone Pony in Asbury Park on February 16, 2001, 2 decades ago this very day!

Thirty five years ago today, on December 22, 1985, La Bamba & The Hubcaps hosted their 3rd Annual Christmas show at the Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ. The event was a fund raiser for the Foundation To Find & Protect America's Children. La Bamba was actually Richie Rosenberg, a trombonist who had played with Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes. Through originally from Philadelphia, Rosenburg relocated to the Jersey Shore once he became part of the Jukes. Several of Rosenburg’s friends showed up to help him celebrate Christmas 1985, including Gary US Bonds, Marshall Crenshaw, Gene Cornish of the Rascals, and David Johansen, as his alter ego Buster Poindexter! This WNEW FM broadcast captures all the festivities, including a final set where everyone joins in for a host of holiday classics! Download this one, then comeback tomorow for the 2nd annual party!

This soundboard recording captures the vastly underated and under appreciated Marshall Crenshaw at the Ritz on December 19, 1984, 3 dozen years ago today.  Crenshaw was on in tour in support of his fiorst two albums, discs that famed critic Robert Christgau called "perfect". In keeping with our theme this month, during the encores, Mr. Crenshaw throws in a snippet of Feliz Navidad.
