1980s - #5: In 1985, Edie Brickell, was invited to sing in a local folk rock group, New Bohemians. Soon after, she would join the band as lead singer. Three years later, their 1988 debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, became surprise critical and commercial success. The album sold over 3 million copies and climbed to #4 on the Billboard charts. The single, What I Am, went to # 7 on the Billboard charts and received extensive airplay on MTV. In addition, What I Am was featured in a 1989 episode of Miami Vice, an episode of Beavis and Butt-Head, an episode of Doogie Howser, M.D. and in the 1989 Patrick Dempsey film Loverboy.  This soundbaord recording captures them during that breakthrough year, in Chicago, on November 29, 1988, 37 years ago today.

Today we bring you highlights from Farm Aid 2020, broadcast on September 26, 2020, 5 years ago today.  Due to the COVID pandemic, no concert ws held. Instead the partcipating artists played live in a studi setting, sometimes from their own homes, with the perfromances streamed via a webcast.  We have sets from 4 artists - founders Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young, as well as Edie Brickell. Note - while the sound quality is generally excellent, some extraneous noise can be heard during Neil's set. You see, he decided to play his songs in a chicken coop in a farm, so you can occaisionally hear the hens clucking!!

Welcome to a post about another artist that folks may not realize had connections to Jerry Garcia.  In the summer of 1990, Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians led in for the Grateful Dead at several stadium shows. That led to her working with Garcia and Rob Wasserman on 2 songs three years later  - Zillionaire and American Popsicle - for the latter’s album, Trios. She then sat in with the Dead on September 20, 1993 at Madison Square Garden, and legend has it her pressence so inspired Garcia that he threw down a masterful version of Morning Dew. That guest spot also Garcia thinking about a new venture - a an improv band, and Edie Brickell signed on to be a key part of it. The band would have headed out on the road with other great musicians - Branford Marsalis, Bruce Hornsby, and Rob Wasserman were also to be part of the group - without any material, making it all up on the spot at each show. Garcia's wife at the time, Deborah Koons, put an end to any notion of a new band, so unfortunately, we never got to see what that incredibly talented group could have done on stage.

Thsi soundboard recording captures Edie and the New Bohemians about a year before they first encountered the Grateful Dead, in Mansfield, on August 25, 1989, 3 dozen years ago today.

In 1985, Edie Brickell was invited to sing with friends from her old high school in a local folk rock group, New Bohemians. Soon after, she would join the band as lead singer. Three years later, their 1988 debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, became surprise critical and commercial success. The album sold over 3 million copies and climbed tho #4 on the Billboard charts. The single, What I Am, went to # 7 on the Billboard charts and received extensive airplay on MTV. The band's follow up album, however, failed to excite critic or fans, and by 1992.the band was no more. Brickell married Paul Simon that year and launched a solo career in 1994. She has reformed the band on a variety of occasions since 1994, often times for charity or fund raising events. The band even recorded an album, Stranger Things, in 2006, and another, Rocket, in 2018.  This soundboard matrix recording captures Edie and the New Bohemians in her home town of Dallas, on April 17, 2017, just 2 years ago today.

Brickell married Paul Simon that year and launched a solo career in 1994.  She put the band back together though, for a 2 night reunion in late 1994 to raise money for Jahliese Blount, whose mother had been murdered This was the first of a 2 night reunion at Trees  in Dallas to support 4 year old Jahliese Blount. Jahliese's  mother, Jahdene, who was a friend of the band, had been murdered. You can read more on this story here. In 1985, Edie Brickell was invited to sing with friends from her old high school in a local folk rock group, New Bohemians. Soon after, she would join the band as lead singer. Three years later, their 1988 debut album, Shooting Rubberbands at the Stars, became surprise critical and commercial success. The album sold over 3 million copies and climbed to #4 on the Billboard charts. The single, What I Am, went to # 7 on the Billboard charts and received extensive airplay on MTV. Edie and the new Bohiemans led in twice for the Grateful Dead on July 12, 1990 and this show, a soundboard recording, from July 14, 1990, a quarter century ago today, but didn’t get on stage with the band either of those nights. She did, however sit in with them at Madison Square Garden on September 20, 1993 for 2 tunes, The Other One and Going Down The Road Feeling Bad.
