Grateful Dead 1980 - Back To Back - #3:  As promised yesterday, here's the 3rd installment in our Back To Back Set featuring the Grateful Dead at Radio City Music Hall in 1980. And also, as promised, here's a host of background on that run, including how I got to attend this show! For a brief moment in 1979, it looked like Radio City Music Hall, the landmark art deco theater nicknamed the Showplace of the Nation, would be closed and tuned into office space. More enlightened thinking prevailed and the theater was instead renovated and reopened in 1980. In addition to the physical transformation the building underwent, the venue also took a new approach toward booking acts. For the first time ever, rock and roll bands were added to the roster of performers that graced the hallowed theater. In October 1980, the fall of my senior year, I interviewed the concert director at Radio City Music Hall for an article in my school newspaper’s semi-annual “College Student’s Guide To Arts and Entertainment”. We discussed the theater’s change in booking policy, including the fact that the Grateful Dead would play 8 nights at Radio City later that month. Not only did I get a great story, but I also came away with 2 tickets to the last night of the Dead’s upcoming run, on Halloween. The Radio City Shows, along with ones previously performed at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco and the Saenger Performing Arts Center in New Orleans, commemorated the band’s 15th anniversary, and included an acoustic set to open the night. The contrast between the Dead’s audience, in tie dye and costumes on Halloween, and the stately confines of Radio City, was quite a sight to behold. The entire show was broadcast to movie theaters throughout the country via closed circuit television. The Dead rose to the occasion that night, playing a stellar acoustic set that included an instrumental version of Weir’s Heaven Help The Fool; one of the only 2 times they performed Sage and Spirit; and outstanding versions of Monkey & The Engineer, Birdsong and Ripple. Two beautifully played electric sets followed, and the band sent everyone off to trick or treat with a very special Uncle John’s Band for an encore. This soundboard recording captures every note of that October 31, 1980 performance that took place 41 years ago today. Jefferson Airplane 1966 - Back To Back - #1. In late 1966, the Jefferson Airplane recruited Grace Slick, and the rest, as they say, was history. Over the course of the next 6 months, the Airplane took center stage as one of the leading bands of the new psychedelic rock movement that emerged from San Francisco. Their breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, produced by the Dead's Jerry Garcia, and released in February 1967, spawned two huge hits, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit, both powered by Grace's vocals. The Airplane played at the Human Be-In in January and then at the Monterrey Pop Festival in June, helping inaugurate the Summer of Love, in which thousands of young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco.  This soundboard recording captures the Airplane just about a week after Grace joined the band, on October 25, 1966, 55 years ago today.  Download this one, then come backk tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Grateful Dead 1989 - Back To Back - #1: In 1989, the Grateful Dead’s traditional East Coast tour started about a month later than normal. The Dead were having a variety of issues with concert venues that fall. For example, one traditional tour stop, Madison Square Garden in NY, was under construction, forcing the band to re-locate to the Byrne Arena in New Jersey. When the band arrived in NJ in mid-October, they turned the last night of their stay on October 16, Bob Weir’s 42nd birthday into one of the great shows of the decade, which was later officially released as the album, Nightfall Of Diamonds (I was lucky enough to be in the audience that night!). Another regular tour stop, Hampton VA, no longer wanted the band to play in their city due to crowd control issues, including having thousands of Dead Heads camping out days prior to the show. To circumvent the ban, The Dead booked themselves into the Hampton Arena under the pseudonym “Formerly The Warlocks”. They then played 2 shows for the ages, during which they brought back songs such as Death Don’t Have No Mercy and Attics of My Life, which hadn’t been played in almost 20 years! Those shows also were both officially released as was their concerts in Miami on October 26.  The entire tour found the band on fire, as evidenced by this soundboard recording from Charlotte from October 22, 1989, 32 years ago today. The Who 1982 - Back to Back - #1: The Who were yet another of the legendary rock bands who went on hiatus for a large part of the 1980s. In the fall of 1982, The Who launched a 40 date tour of the US and Canada to support their latest album, It’s Hard. On December 14, during their 2nd show in Richfield, Ohio, Pete Townshend announced that it would be their last concert in the US. It clearly appeared that The Who was calling it a career. As a result, their performance on December 17, 1982 was broadcast on both FM radio and Pay Per View TV as the general perception at the time was that it would be the final concert ever. Of course, despite calling this their farewell tour, the Who eventually returned to touring in 1989 and haven’t stopped. Even as I type are playing live shows during their 50th anniversary tour. Cream - 1968-10-19 - Los Angeles, CA (SBD) 

Cream 1968 - Back to Back - #1: In August 1968, Cream released the double album, Wheels of Fire, which went to the top of the charts in the US and reached the #3 position in the UK. The album included soon to be classics such as White Room and Born Under A Bad Sign, as well as an incredible live version of Crossroads. Despite the album’s commercial and critical success, Cream was on its last legs as a band. Lead guitarist Eric Clapton had grown tired of the psychedelic jamming that become Cream’s trademark and wanted to go in a new direction. He was heavily influenced at the time by The Band’s debut album, Music From Big Pink, with its simpler approach to songs that drew from such genres as folk, country and blues. Clapton was also tired of playing peace maker between bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker. With all 3 members in agreement that the end had come, Cream launched a farewell tour, which consisted of 22 shows at 19 venues in the US between in October and November 1968, as well two concerts at the Royal Albert Hall in London on November 26. This  soundboard recording from Los Angeles captures them during that Farewell Tour on October 19, 1968, 53 years ago today! Fleetwood Mac - 1975-10-17 - Passaic, NJ (early) (SBD) 

Fleetwood Mac 1975 - Back to Back - #1: Once a blues based band propelled by Peter Green’s guitar work, Fleetwood Mac underwent an incredible transformation in the early 1970s. The band went through a 10 different lineup changes, with the final step being the departure of Bob Welch and the arrival of Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks. The result was what is now known as the classic Fleetwood Mac line up – Buckingham, Nicks, Mick Fleetwood, John McVie and Christine McVie. The newly constructed band released a self titled album in July 1975, which at first received very little attention. The band toured relentlessly in support of the disc, however, and 15 months after its release, it climbed to #1 on the US charts. The .album also produced 3 top 20 singles – Over My Head, Rhiannon, and Say You Love Me. Of course, more was still to come from this line up, as in 1977, hey would release Rumours, one of the biggest selling albums of all time. This soundboard recording captures Fleetwood Mac during the early days of their tour in support of their just released disc, playing a set list that featured only a few songs from that album. The band was still in transition, playing older tunes, even ones from the Peter Green era, to appease longtime fans, while slowly acclimating them to the band’s new line up and direction.
