While I went to 50 Grateful Dead concerts, I only saw the late, great Bob Weir solo once, in July 1992 at the Meadowlands Summer Fest, which as mentioned in our Bruce Cockburn post earlier this month, was a concert arena set up in the parking lot at Giants Stadium. Oh the things promoter John Scher did to run a concert and make a buck. 

This soundboard recording captures Weir some 8 years later, fronting Ratdog at the Gathering Of The Vibes Festival in Bridgeport on June 24, 2000, 26 years ago today.  Weir and Ratdog get a little help from Les Claypool on several tunes.

Bruce Springsteen - 2000-06-17 - MSG, NY, NY (ALD Matrix)

I've attended 9 Springsteen concerts, in 4 different decades (70s, 80s, 90s, & 2000's) with 2 different backing bands (the E-Streeters and those other guys he played with in the 1990s, whoever they were!). On top of that, I've seen Bruce twice in the same year 3 times - 1978, 1992 and 2003! The other 3 shows I attended were in 1984, 1984, and 1988. If that's not enough, I saw Bruce in a 5th decade, the 2010s, when he, along with Miami Steve, were special guests of Paul McCartney on September 15, 2017 at Madison Square Garden, as mentioned in our Sir Paul post yesterday. Then in 2022, as alos mentioned yesterday, I saw Springsteen in a 6th decade, on June 16, 2022 as he was once again a guest of Macca's. So, that's 11 dufferent times I've seen Springsteen take the stage.

This ALD matrix recording captures Springsteen at Madison Sqaure Garden on June 17, 2000, 26 years ago today, during his reunion tour with the E-Street Band which hasd launced in 1999. After an 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in The Blue Brothers, to put the band back back together and go on the road. One high point of the tour was a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. Another was a 10-night, sold-out engagement at "The World's Most Famous Arena", which included this show. At key points in each concert, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Springsteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll. Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. With the band reunited, the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man, Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. It was clear that the Boss was glad to be back with his old comrades.

Elton John  - 2000-04-18 - Syracuse NY (Ex Aud)

Elton John was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994, along with the Grateful Dead, The Band, The Animals, Bob Marley and John Lennon, just to list a few members of that class. Elton was inducted by an Axl Rose of Guns & Roses, as unlikely a choice as you could imagine! During his acceptance speech, Elton acknowledged his longtime song writing partner, Bernie Taupin, who he brought him on stage to share the award.  Bernie was eventually inducted in the Musical Excellence category in 2023.

In any event, this excellent audience recording skips ahead 6 years after that ceremomy, to capture Elton in Syracuse on April 18, 2000, 26 years ago today.  Over a year prior, in February 1999, Elton launched a solo acoustic tour which would stretch into 2000 and feature shows in North America and Europe. My wife and I were fortunate to catch Elton near the end of the 1999 leg of that tour, on October 15, 1999 at Madison Square Garden. Elton played over 2 dozen songs in a show that lasted over 3 hours, with no breaks, making the 20,000 seat arena feel like an intimate piano bar. Truly one of the most memorable shows of the almost 175 concerts I have been fortunate enough to attend.

2000s - #3: When CSNY concluded their "Reunion Tour" at Wembley Stadium in late 1974, probably no one would have guessed that the foursome would not tour again for over 25 years.  In that time, the 4 band members worked together in various configurations (most notably the CSN trio) and even appeared together for special events such as Live Aid in 1985, but a full CSNY tour would not take place until the turn of the century.  Needless to say, therefore, the announcement of the CSNY2K tour, taking its name from the way overblown Y2K computer scare, was a major event and tickets sold out in a matter of minutes once they went on sale.  I was fortunate enough to get 2 for so the April 9,2000 show at the Continental Arena in NJ.  CSNY did not disappoint, playing 3 sets, 2 electric sandwiching an acoustic one, that included all their classics, as well as solo material, Buffalo Springfield tunes and even a nod to Crosby's days with the Byrds, when the band broke out 8 Miles High!  This soundboard recording captures CSNY during that historic tour, on March 14, 2000 in Atlanta, 26 years ago today.

2000s- #2: Between 1989 and 2014, the Allmans Brothers Band played over 200 shows at the Beacon Theater in New York City. Their annual residency, usually in March, became the stuff of legends. The Allmans not only celebrated their 40th anniversary in 2009 at the venue, with 15 sold out shows packed with guest stars, but also play their very last show as a band at the theatre. This soundboard recording catures the Allmans during their 2000 run at the Beacon, on March 11, 2000, 26 years ago today.

2000s - #3: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Dead & Company, Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This soundboard recording captures Weir and Ratdog in Norfolk on November 22, 2000, a quarter century today.

Warren Zevon - 2000-05-29 - South Shields, UK (SBD or Ex Aud) 

2000s - #6: On January 25, 2000, Warren Zevon released his 10th studio album, entitled Life'll Kill Ya. The disc barely cracked the Billboard 200 rankings, peaking at #173, while critical success was moderate, with Rolling Stone and Allmusic both giving the album 3.5 star ratings. Several of the album's songs deal with the topic of death. For example, My Shit's F***ed Up is a mournful lament about the aging process and the inevitable decay that accompanies it. The title track and Don't Let Us Get Sick also feature death as a theme. Perhaps Warren had a premonition of what was in store - just 2 years later he was diagnosed with mesothelioma, and he passed away from the disease on September 7, 2003. This soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures Zevon on tour in support of the album in South Shields, on May 29, 2000, a quarter century ago today.

In 1999, the Pretenders released their 7th studio album, entitled ¡Viva El Amor!, which is Spanish for Long Live Love. The album’s cover photo of Chrissie Hynde was taken by Linda Eastman shortly before she passed away in 1998. While not as successful as the band’s prior disc, Last Of The Independents, Viva El Amor generally received good reviews, including a 4 star rating from Melody Maker and an A- grade from Robert Christgau. On October 3, 2000, Paul Simon released his 10th solo studio album, The album was nominated for a Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 2001, making Simon the first artist to be nominated in that category in five consecutive decades (1960s-2000s). In 2006, Paul McCartney became the only other artist to match that feat when his disc Chaos and Creation in the Backyard was nominated. The album went to #19 on the US Billboard charts and to #20 on the UK charts. The Who - 2000-08-29 - Houston TX (SBD)

The Who were one of the few English bands to play Woodstock, but their set is the stuff of legends. The band didn't take the stage until 5 am Sunday morning due to all the rain delays and equipment issues. Their 25 song set featured the rock opera Tommy, followed by Summertime Blues, Shakin All Over, My Generation and Naked Eye. While the band was playing We're Not Going to Take It, the sunrise occurred at precisely at the most dramatic moment in the song. The band was so pleased at the aesthetic effect of this coincidence that they arranged special lighting at future concerts to try and mimic it. During their performance, Peter Townsend had a run in with activist Abbie Hoffman. Hoffman went on stage between songs, grabbed a mic, and began ranting about the recent arrest of radical John Sinclair. Townshend, none too happy that Hoffman had violated what he called the sanctity of the stage, swung his guitar at Hoffman and kicked him off the stage.

This soundboard recording captures The Who 31 years after Woodstock in Houston on August 29, 2000. The 2000 tour featured original members Peter Townshend, Roger Daltrey and John Entwistle, along with Zack Starkey on drums and John Bundrick on keyboards. The band played 38 dates, beginning on June 6 in New York, and concluding on November 27 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Sadly, it would be the last tour included Entwistle. On June 27, 2002, just days before their next US tour was due to begin, Entwistle was found dead from a heart attack at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Cocaine had played a role in triggering the fatal attack.

Los Lobos 2000 - Back To Back - #1: Incredibly in 1998, less than a dozen years after their commercial breakthrough with the album By The Light Of The Moon and their cover of La Bamba, Los Lobos were dropped by Warner records. The band, by the way, had not been resting on their laurels. In 1995, they released the critically acclaimed children's album, Papa's Dream. That same year, Los Lobos won a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Performance for the tune Mariachi Suite. Unfortunately, mixed reviews for the album Colossal Head, released in 1996, led to their dismissal by Warner. In 1999, the band signed with Hollywood Records and released the album, This Time,  This soundboard recording captures them on tour in support of that disc, in Santa Ynez Valley on June 16, 2000, 2 dozen years ago today. Bruce Springsteen - 2000-03-31 - Denver CO (IEM)

As mentiond earlier this month. Bruce Springsteen entered the Rock & Eoll Hall of Fame in 1999.  His faithful backing band, the E-Street Band, however, didn't get inducted until 2014, when who else, but Bruce made the induction speech.

2000 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony - 2000-03-06 - New York, NY (TV SBD)

The 2000 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame ceremony was highlighted by the inductions of Eric Clapton, Bonnie  Raitt and James Taylor, all of whom not only performed solo, but also particated in the All Star Jam to close the night. For Clapton, it was his 3rd induction, after having been recognized as a member of Cream and The Yardbirds.  Diana Ross performed God Bless The Child in honor of Billie Holiday's imduction, while Ray Charles played Nature Boy to commerate Nat King Cole. The Lovin Spoonful reunited to play 2 songs, while Patti Smith performed People Have The Power in honor of Clive Davis's induction.  The ceremony also featured the first inductions into a new category, Sidemen.
