Of all of Billy Joel's albums, my two favorites are two of his earliest, Piano Man and Turnstiles. His breakthrough album, The Stranger, didn't do much for me, and his first #1 disc, 52nd Street, is on my list of albums I never want to hear again. That disc came out when I was in college and so many people were playing it constantly that I just couldn't take it any more. So, given those facts, why have I seen Billy Joel in concert on half a dozen occasions? Well, back in 1990 I met a girl. And we went out on a few dates. And she had tickets to see Billy, her favorite artist, at Yankee Stadium. And she invited me to go. And two years later we were married! And marrying her has been the best thing I've ever done in my life! So, whenever she wants to see Billy Joel, I gladly get the tickets. As I mentioned, we've seen him 6 times together - 1990, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2015, and 2016. By the way, if you like personal anecdotes like this one, you'll find a host more in my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT.
This soundboard recording captures Billy on the cusp of superstardom, at Carneige Hall on June 3, 1977, 49 years ago today. The setlist included 2 songs - Just The Way You Are and Scenes From An Italian Restaurant - from the soon to be released album The Stranger. That album would take the world by storm, climbing to #2 on the US charts, and selling over 10 million copies, becoming Columbia Records largest selling album up to that time. The disc yielded 4 top 25 singles, the aforemnetioned Just the Way You Are at #3, Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) at #17, Only the Good Die Young at #24, and "She's Always a Woman at #17. And the other tune from the album played at Carneige Hall, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, became a favorite of FM radio stations.

So similar yet different a story for me. I met my first wife at a record show when she was looking for a copy of Cold Spring Harbor, his first album. We got engaged in December 1989 before one of his shows and ended up seeing him three times while we are together. We are not together anymore yet, surprisingly, I can still listen to Billy and to Kim's other favorite artist, Phil Collins. But there are a lot of songs from the time of our breakup I can't bear to listen to. (I am remarried, and happily.) As for 52nd Street, I bought it as a junior in high school and loved it especially Until The Night, one of his best songs.
@Trivial Tony - a bittersweet tale. Glad you are happily remarried and enjoying life
Thank you for this great show! I've only seem the entertainer twice, but am always ready for more - He's great to see live. My experience with Billy was much more mainstream; I was aware of his earlier hits on the radio but when The Stranger came out, I was all over it. I do enjoy 52nd Street, but mostly for the lesser radio played tracks (Zanzibar, Stiletto and Half A Mile Away in particular). I was the same way with Glass Houses; the hits got played out, but several of the other tracks on the album really caught my attention. I love Close To The Borderline! His albums were off my radar, enough of what I heard on the radio, until Storm Front. Anyway, thanks so much again, and take care!
