EC 1985 - Back To Back - #1: For Eric Clapton, 1985 was a year in which he returned to worldwide prominence. Working with Phi Collins, he released the album, Behind The Sun, in March 1985, which was a huge improvement of his previous effort, 1983’s Money and Cigarettes. It was also his first album after spending time in rehab for his addiction to alcohol. Fueled by the single Forever Man, which received extensive play both on radio and on MTV, Behind The Sun climbed into the top 40 on the Billboard charts. The album also yielded the single, She's Waiting, which was included as part of EC’s set at Live Aid in July 1985. That Live Aid appearance, which also included White Room and Layla, showed the world a healthy and rejuvenated Slowhand, who could still play with the best of them.  This excellent audience recording captures him early on in that comeback year, in Scotland on February 27, 1985, 41 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of thos Back To Back set.

Stones 1990 - Back To Back - #1: On August 29, 1989, the Rolling Stones released the album Steel Wheels, their first disc in 3 years. Two days later, they launched a US tour in support of the album, their first live concerts in the US since 1981, a stretch of 8 years. During that time, stories had abounded that the tensions between Jagger and Richards might lead to the end to the band. So, fans were relieved that the Glimmer Twins had resolved their issues and fired up that the Stones were returning to the stage. The album went to #3 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed one spot higher than that in the UK. In addition, The tour was a massive financial success. After completing their North American run in late 1989, the Stones took the tour to Japan in early 1990. This soundboard recording captures them in Tokyo, on February 26, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back to Back Set.

Lou Reed 1983 - Back To Back - #1: In 1980, Lou reed stopped touring for almost 3 years, spending time instead in the studio working on 2 albums, The Blue Mask and Legendary Hearts.  While neither cracked the top 150 on the Billboard charts, both received rave critical reviews, with the Robert Christgau, for example, giving each an A rating. Reed finally returned to the stage in early 1983, touring in support of both discs.  As part of that tour, he played 4 dates at the legendary Bottom Line nightclub in New York in late February/early March 1983, performing 2 shows each night.  Tickets were just $12.50. This soundboard recording capturs the soundcheck and early show from the opening night of the run, on February 25, 1983, 43 years ago today.  Download this one, then comeback later today for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT: UPDATED & EXPANDED EDITION

Countless "truth is stranger than fiction" tales, 177 magical concerts, 100 unique bands, 50 years of finding a way to the next show, and 10 Rules Of The Road all add up to 1 ordinary guy's extraordinary love letter to live rock & roll.

And now, the book with a 4.4 star review on Amazon just got even better - welcome to the updated and expanded 2025 edition of TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT: AN ORDINARY GUY'S LIFETIME OF LIVE ROCK & ROLL!

The new edition is 582 pages, with over 250 pages of brand new content including:
  • updates elements to every section of the book – the rules, the essays, the concert summaries, and the statistics.
  • more tales from my 20th century concert adventures that I dredged out of my memory that didn't make the first edition
  • details of all the shows I’ve attended since 2021, after the first edition was published, until today
  • complete re-writes of Rules #2, #5, #6, #7, # 8 and #10, as well as the Grateful Dead essay, have been almost completely re-written.
  • consolidating the Song Selection essays from three to two but adding more songs to each remaining chapter in the process, doubling the number of tunes covered from 40 to 80.
  • replacing the discarded song essay, with a new one about the relationship between rock & roll and Broadway, a unique pairing that only really came into focus for me in the last year or so.
  • adding numerous new charts/tables to the statistics section
  • quadrupling the number of setlists from shows I attended.
  • re-editing the entire book to clean up some areas that either seemed cumbersome or didn’t flow well
  • reformatting the entire book to give it a more professional look and feel.
It's bigger! It's  better! It's the perfect holiday gift for the rock and roll fan in your life!  And the paperback is still only $14.99!

Furthur 2010 - Back To Back - #1: Furthur named after the psychedelic bus used by Ken Kesey and his Merry Pranksters in 1964, was the 3rd post Grateful Dead band, following the Other Ones and the Dead, to feature multiple members of that group In this case, Bob Weir and Phil Lesh teamed up to launch Furthur in 2009. The band toured from 2009 to 2014, with a host of supporting players and numerous guest sitting in along the way. This soundboardrecording captures the band in Delaware on February 22, 2010, 16 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow and the next day for parts 2 and 3 of this Back To Back set.

Historical notes: The Grateful Dead, of course, served as the house band in 1967 for Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, which were chronicled in Tom Wolfe's book, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. The bus, Furthur was driven by Neal Cassady, the inspiration for the character Dean Moriarty in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, who is referenced in the Grateful Dead tune The Other One in the line "Captain Neal at the wheel of the bus to Never Never Land".

Sheryl 1997 - Back To Back - #1:  When your debut album goes to #3 on the Billboard charts, and wins 3 Grammys, as Tuesday Night Music Club did, you've established quite a standard for future releases. For Sheryl Crow, however, that hardly seemed to be an issue. In 1996, her self-titled second disc went to # 6 on the charts, earned her 2 more Grammys, and included such hits as Everyday Is A Winding Road, If It Makes You Happy and Hard To Make A Stand. The album also received significant critical acclaim. For example, the Village Voice ranked it at #26 in its list of the best albums of 1996. Rolling Stone selected it as one of the essential albums of the 1990s while also naming it the 44th greatest album of all time by a female artist. This soundboard recording captures Sheryl at the tower Theatre on February 20, 1997, 29 years ago today, on tour in support of her 2nd album. Shery is joined for 3 songs by Jakob Dylan of the Wallflowers, who were leading in for Sheryl on this tour.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

JGB 1978 - Back To Back - #1: In the winter of 1978, Jerry Garcia went on tour in support of the album Cats Under The Stars, which he recorded in late 1977 and released in April 1978. Unlike Bob Weir, who made some unique choices in the session musicians that helped him record Heaven Help The Fool, Garcia stayed tried and true, working with long time bass player John Kahn, keyboardist Merl Saunders, and drummer Ron Tutt, as well as Grateful Dead members Keith and Donna Jean Godchaux. Garcia also recruited vocalist Maria Muldaur, know for her 1974 hit Midnight at The Oasis, to provide backing vocals for the disc. Kahn, The Godchaux's and Muldaur were all part of the tour band as well, with Buzz Buchanan on drums being the only member of the live ensemble not to have played on the album. Many folks consider this 1978 tour one of the finest by the Jerry Garcia Band, with both the March 18 and March 22 shows having been officially released. I also saw Garcia live for the first time on this tour, on March 17 at the Capitol Theater. This soundboard matrix recording captures Gracia near the end of the west coast leg on the tour, in San Rafael on February 18, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Here's a link to a Mega folder containing 61 FM or SBD concerts in mp3 320.  They are all from my request list.

All are single files, however that need to be split into tracks.  For every show in the folder, I have provided a corresponding info file that contains the set list.  (Note: there's 1 info file for the 2 Elton John shows from 2000-02-17)

If anyone wants to split any of these into tracks, I'd be very appreciative. If you do, just share a link to the split tracks in a comment below this post.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Enjoy the tunz.

NOTE 1: As folks split shows, I will remove them from the folder to avoid duplication!

Joe Jackson - 1980-02-16 - Boston MA (SBD)

Joe Jackson 1980 - #2: As promised, here's the 2nd half of our Same Tour, Different Show entering featuring Joe Jackson in 1980. This one is an FM Broadcast from Boston from February 15, 1980, 46 years ago today. By the way, some confusion exists about this date. The download actually includes a 2nd copy of the show dated February 23.  Some sources say that February 23 was the broadcast date, with February 16 being the actual concert date. Others sources, however, indicate that the show was postponed from February 16 to February 23 because Joe was suffering from a sore throat. Whether February 16 or February 23 is correct, this concert features Angry Joe at his best.

Neil 1991 - Back To Back - #1:  In late 1990, Neil Young released his 20th studio album, and 6th back by Crazy Horse, entitled Ragged Glory. The album's garage rock sound earned Neil the honorary title of "Godfather of Grunge".  The disc went to #31 on the Billboard Charts and earned outstanding critcal reviews. Kurt Loder, for example, called the album a "great one", which was a "a monument to the spirit of the garage - to the pursuit of passion over precision".  In addition, the Village Voice ranked it as the album of the year in its annual poll.  In early 1991, Neil and the Horse went on tour in support of Ragged Glory.  This soundboard recording captures them in Buffalo on February 16, 1991, 35 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set

Joe Jackson - 1980-02-15 - Capitol Theatre, Passaic, NJ (SBD)

Joe Jackson 1980 - #1: When Joe Jackson hit the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ on February 15, 1980, 46 years ago today, he was in full Angry Joe mode. He was touring in support of his first 2 albums, both released in 1979, Look Sharp and I'm The Man. And as I entered the theater for the show, I was hardly in a Valentine's Day mood. I was in the process of being dumped by a girlfriend, so I was ready for a defiant, edgy, punk, new wave performance.  And I got it.  Joe delivered a fiery set, propelled by Graham Maby's base, that included an unexpected cover of the Harder They Come!  Songs like Is She Really Going Out With Him and One More Time, delivered with reckless abandon, resonated perfectly with me. Download this soundboard recording of the show, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different show entry. `By the way, you can actually see the show here.

JRAD 2025 - Back To Back - #1: Formed in 2013, Joe Russo's Almost Dead (JRAD) are one of the many Grateful Dead offshoots and cover bands that emerged in the wake of Jerry Garcia's death in 1995. Of course, JRAD has a bit more credibility tha most such bands since their leader, drummer Joe Russo, was part of Furthur with Bob Weir and Phil Lesh, as well as a member of the 2014 line up of Phil & Friends. This soundboard matrix recording captures JRAD in Atlanta on February 14, 2025, just a year ago today. Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back to Back set.
