In 1996 VH1 launched Storytellers, a program in which artists performed in front of a small audience, and recounted stories about their music, writing experiences and memories. The show had its hey day between its debut and 2002, when 67 of its 98 episodes aired. This soundboard recording captures James Taylor's edition of the show, recorded in New York on May 31, 1997, 29 years ago today. Taylor had recently released the studio album "Hourglass," his first studio album in six years. It was seen as a comeback for him, both commercially and critically. The disc was his first Top Ten album in the U.S. in 16 years, selling over a million copies. It also won him a Grammy Award for Best Pop Album. Note: a thanks to Albums That Should Exist for the original files.

Jerry Garcia (Reconstruction) - 1979-05-30 - Palo Alto, CA (SBD)

Reconstruction was another side project Jerry Garcia was involved in during the decade of the 1970s. Founded by Garcia's long time bassist, John Kahn, in early 1979, Reconstruction was built around Jerry and a quartet of jazz players. According to the Jerry Garcia website, it's unclear if Garcia was supposed to be permanent member of the band. By the time they started to perform in January 1979, however, Jerry was officially in. That limited performances to when the Grateful Dead were off the road. On a couple of occasions, they attempted to sub Jerry Miller on guitar, but the crowds expected to see the "real" Jerry" each time. Reconstruction played just over fifty shows during 1979, all on the west coast. This soundboard captures one of those shows, in Palo Alto, on May 30, 1979, 47 years ago today!

David Johansen - 1978-05-29 - Cleveland, OH (FM)

Long before he was doing a lounge act as Buster Poindexter, David Johansen was part of the punk/new wave scene. In the early 1970s, he was a member of the New York Dolls, along with Johnny Thunders and Sylvain Sylvain. The Dolls, along with The Velvet Underground and The Stooges, were pioneers of the punk movement. After the Dolls split up, Johansen struck out on his own, releasing his self-titled debut album in 1978 followed up by In Style in 1979. The 2 discs included tunes which would become staples of his live shows, including Funnky But Chic, Melody, Frenchette, You Touched Me To and Girls. This FM broadcast captures Johansen on his first solo tour, at The Agora in Cleveland on Ma9 27, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today.

The Clash - 1983-05-28 - US Festival, Devore, CA (TV SBD) 

 Over Memorial Day Weekend 1983, Steve Wozniak of Apple hosted the 2nd US Festival (the first has been discussed here) at Glen Helen Regional Park near Devore, California. Over 650,000 people attended the 3 day event, and Wozniak lost over $12 million! Each day featured a different musical genre. Opening Day, May 28 was New Wave Day, with such acts as The Clash, English Beat, INXS, Flock of Seagulls, Stray Cats and Men At Work. I'm not quite sure how the last 2 qualified as New Wave! Day 2, was Heavy Metal Day and included Van Halen, Ozzy, and Judas Priest. Finally, day 3 was Rock Day (as if the other 2 days weren't rock??) and featured U2, David Bowie, Stevie Nicks, Joe Walsh and, this post's featured band, the Pretenders. This TV SBD recording captures The Clash from the US Festival on opoening day, May 28, 1983, 43 years ago today.  By the way, this set almost didn't happen as The Clash got into a dispute with the local promoters about their fee for the show.  Moreover, it turned out to be the last gig Mick Jones ever played with the band. Carole King - 1973-05-26 - Central Park, New York, NY (TV SBD)

In the late 1960s, in the wake of her separation from husband and song writing partner, Gerry Goffen, Carole King left her hometown of New York City and moved to Laurel Canyon in Califoria.  Working with producer Lou Adler, King recrded her masterpiece, Tapestry, in 1971, an album that went to #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed in that spot for 15 consecutive weeks.  The album won 4 Grammy Awards, and also spawned the #1 single, It's Too Late.  Two years after that success, King made a triumphant return to New York City. Adler called promter Ron Delsner and explained that Carole wanted to do something special for her original hometown.  Delsner agreed to stage the first ever concert on Central Park's Great Lawn, a free event that would attract over 100,000 fans.  This TV soundboard recording captures that famed concert, when Carole King returned home, on May 26, 1973, 53 years ago today.

In the Bible, you’ll find the Three Wise Men. In the bible of new wave music, you’ll find the Three Angry Young Men, Graham Parker, Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson. Jackson’s debut album, Look Sharp was released in the UK in January 1979, and then in the US in April of that same year. Propelled by the single Is She Really Going Out With Him, which climbed to #21 on the Billboard Charts, the album did even one better, reaching the #20 position. Jackson arrived in the US for his first tour at just about the same time the album hit record stores. This FM broadcast captures him during that tour at the in Boston on May 25, 1979, 47 years ago today. Download this one to hear Angry Joe not only play tunes from Look Sharp, but also preview 2 songs (Friday and the title track) from his 2nd album, I’m The Man, which would be released later that year.

To commemorate the event, the band launched The Who Hits 50! tour, which Roger Daltrey hinted on numerous occasions would be band's "long goodbye". Turn out, they have launched 2 tours since, released a new album and don't seem to show any signed of retiring! In any event, this soundboard (or excellent audience) recording captures then during that 50th anniversary run, at Mohegan Sun Arena on May 24, 2015, 11 years ago today.

After several years of relentless touring, Huey Lewis and the News took some time off from live shows in 1989 with one notable exception. In May of 1989, promoter Bill Graham presented a series of benefit concerts, called "In Concert Against AIDS at multiple venues across the Bay Area. The goal was to to raise awareness about the deadly disease, while also raising funds for both research and care for those afflicted in the Bay Area. Huey Lewis and The News took part in that effort, playing a concert on May 23, 1989, 37 years ago today, at Slim's in San Francisco.

Rolling Stones - 1976-05-22 - London, UK (SBD)

On April 23, 1976, The Rolling Stones released Black & Blue, their first studio album in 2 years. The disc had originally been intended for release in 1975 prior to the Stone’s tour of North America, but was delayed as the band auditioned a variety of guitarists to take the place of Mick Taylor. The candidates included Steve Marriott, Harvey Mandel, Wayne Perkins, and even Peter Frampton, but in the end, The Stones chose Ronnie Wood. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts in the US and took the #2 spot in the UK. The first single from Black & Blue, Fool To Cry, climbed to #10 on the Billboard charts. Critical reviews were mixed, however, as Robert Christgau gave the record an A-, but Lester Bangs claimed that Black and Blue was “the first meaningless Rolling Stones album.” The band launched a European tour on April 28 in support of the disc, playing 41 shows in 2 months. This soundboard recording captures the Stones in London, on May 22, 1976, 5 decades ago today.  Billy Preston sits in with them for two of his songs, Nothing From Nothing and Outta Space.

Bruce Hornsby - 1996-05-21 - Northampton, MA (SBD)

For Bruce Hornsby, the year 1996 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of his Grammy Award winning debut album, The Way It Is. Rather than look backward, however, Hornsby continued to find ways to push his musical style forward. The cover of his recently released album, Hot House, featured an imagined jam session between bluegrass legend Bill Monroe and jazz legend Charlie Parker, two genres of music that Hornsby incorporated into the songs on that disc. The album also featured guest appearances by such diverse artists as Bela Fleck, Pat Metheney and the late Jerry Garcia. During this period, Hornsby's concerts took on a more improvisational tone, as he often took requests from the audience, rather than work from a set list. He would challenge himself to find ways to seamlessly string together diverse requests, turning the album versions of songs into more complex arrangements. As he says on his website, "I think of my songs as living beings that evolve and change and grow through the years." In his continuing quest to grow and evolve his music, Hornsby also participated in the Furthur Festival in the summer of 1996, one of the many Grateful Dead family endeavors launched in the wake of the death of Jerry Garcia. His band played along with Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and others. This soundboard recordinmg captures Hornsby a few weeks before th Furthur tour, in Northampton on May 21, 1996, 3 decades ago today.  His focus on collaborating with diverse artists is evident as he gets some help from Jimmy Herring, Kofi Burbridge and John Molo during the show.

When Rockpile unexpectedly disbanded in 1981, Dave Edmunds made wholesale changes in his musical life. He switched record labels, moving from Swan Song to Arista. He put together a new band, which included guitarist Mickey Gee, bassist John David, pianist Geraint Watkins, and drummer Dave Charles. That group would record and tour with Edmunds throughout the rest of the 1980s. Amidst all that change, one thing stayed the same -- Edmunds' ability to play good old straight ahead rock and roll. This FM broadcast captures Edmunds and his new band in Washington, DC on May 20, 1982, 44 years ago today. In addition to songs from his then soon to be released album DE7, Edmunds also plays tunes from his days with Nick Lowe, as well as his 1970 hit, I Hear You Knockin'.

In early 1976, Billy Joel returned to New York after spending almost 4 years in Los Angeles. He recorded Turnstiles, his 4th album, at Ultrasonic Studios in his native Long Island. Three of the album's tracks celebrate his return home by specifically referencing New York: Summer, Highland Falls, New York State Of Mind and Miami 2017. In addition, the opening number, Say Goodbye to Hollywood, is his not so fond farewell to the West Coast. While the album only climbed to #122 in the Billboard charts, it did help launch Billy on his first headline tour. This FM broadcast captures Joel i Australia on May 19, 1976, 50 years ago today.

In early 1976, Hall & Oates released the single Sara Smile, on RCA records, which became the group’s first top 10 hit. Then in July, their former record company, Atlantic, re-released the single She’s Gone, hoping to capitalize on the success of Sara Smile. It worked, as the song climbed to #7 on the Billboard charts. RCA had the last laugh, however, when the band’s next single, Rich Girl, from the 1976 album, Bigger Than Both of Us, became the duo’s first number one hit! This soundboard recording captures Hall & Oates during their climb to the top of the charts, in London on May 18, 1976, a half century ago today.

Marshall Tucker Band - 1981-05-16 - Jackson, NJ (FM)

The late 1970s and early 1980s were a difficult time for Southern Rock. The genre began to fall out of favor with the rise of punk and new wave music. Lynyrd Skynyrd fell victim to a tragic plane crash in 1977, which killed band members Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines and Cassie Gaines. The Allman Brothers dissolved, reformed and then dissolved again. Capricorn Records, which was the home to the Allmans and a host of other southern rock artists, including the Marshall Tucker Band,, collapsed in 1979 due to financial issues. The MTB would suffer its own tragedy just 4 months into the decade of the 80s, when bassist Tommy Caldwell died in an auto accident. Lead guitarist Toy Caldwell would leave the band 4 years later. Southern Rock, which has risen to prominence in the middle of the 1970s, would never again be the same. This FM broadcast captures the MTB during that difficult period, in New Jersey on May 16, 1981, 45 years ago today.

In 1981, Joan Jett released the 2 albums that would forever define her career. In January of that year, Bad Repulation hit stores, and rose all the way to #51 on the Billboard Charts. That disc was followed in November by the album, I Love Rock and Roll. Powered by the title track, which would spend 7 weeks as the #1 single in the US, Jett's 2nd album climbed all the way to the #2 position on the charts. This soundboardt recording, from May 15, 1981, 45 years ago this very day, captures Joan in Boston, about half way between her 2 album releases. The set includes tunes from both discs, as well as some classic rock covers, such as Summertime Blues and Rebel Rebel.

In October 1981, U2 released their second album, October, to mixed reviews. The band had struggled with this disc, often feeling conflicted between the themes of religion and spirituality contained in the songs and the rock and roll life style they were living. Recording was further complicated by the fact that a briefcase containing lyrics was stolen by fans, through it was eventually returned. Perhaps the band reached a bit too far with October. Years later Bono himself said about the album, "Can you imagine your second album—the difficult second album—it's about God?" In any event, despite the less than stellar reviews and poor sales of October, the band toured extensively in support of the disc. This soundboard recording captures them in the Netherlands on May 14, 1982, 44 years ago today.

Gin Blossoms - 1993-05-13 - Solano Beach, CA (SBD) 

On August 4, 1992, the Gin Blossoms released the album New Miserable Experience, which quickly became the band's breakthrough disc. The first single released from the album, Hey Jealousy, reached #25 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went to #4 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The album would eventually go quadruple platinum in sales. Some of that success was overshadowed, however, by the suicide of band founder, Doug Hopkins, who had been dismissed from the group right before they made it big due to his issues with alcohol. This soundboard recording captures the Gin Blossoms on tour in support of their debut disc on May 13, 1993, 33 years ago today.

Bob Dylan - 1976-05-12 - Austin, TX (SBD)

In late 1975, after releasing the album Blood On Tracks earlier in the year, Bob Dylan launched the Rolling Thunder Revue tour. Dylan recruited a host of other musicians to join him on this tour, including Joan Baez, Roger McGuinn, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Mick Ronson, Kinky Friedman, T Bone Burnett, and Bob Neuwirth. Patti Smith was also invited to be part of the Revue, but politely declined. According to Larry Sloman, who documented the tour, "onstage it was like a carnival. After intermission, the curtain rose to an incredible sight, Bob and Joan, together again after all these years. The tour met with tremendous critical acclaim. For example, Clinton Heylin Wrote "The Rolling Thunder Revue shows remain some of the finest music Dylan ever made with a live band."  Them after releasing the album Desire in early 1976, Dylan went back on the road with the Rolling Thunder Review for a series of Spring shows.  This soundboard captures the tour in Austin on May 12, 1976, a half century ago today!  Note: this one was too big for MirrorCreator so tested a new transfer host.
