1990s - #7: As long time readers of this blog know, I've spent numerous posts discussing the Dead's renaissance between 1989 and 1991. The number of official releases from that period is a testament to the caliber of the band's performances in that era, as they include:
  • a show from Philadelphia from July 7, 1989
  • the Giant Stadium Shows from July 9 and 10, 1989
  • The 2 night stand at RFK Stadium from July 12 and 13, 1989
  • the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989
  • the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989
  • the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990
  • the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990;
  • 2 (yes 2) box sets from Spring 1990, featuring every show from that tour - the only other tour to be released in its entirety besides Europe 1972
  • a show from from Mountain View CA from June 16, 1990
  • a show from from Pittsburgh from July 8, 1990
  • the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990.
  • a show from Paris from October 27, 1990
  • a show from Washington DC from June, 14, 1991
  • the Giants Stadium shows from June 16 and 17, 1991
  • a show from Pine Knob from June 20, 1991
  • a show from Madison Square Garden from September 10, 1991, featuring Bradford Marsalis
  • a show from Boston Garden on September 25, 1991
Without a doubt, those 3 years marked the last great period of the Dead's incredible career.  This soundboard recording captures the Dead during that run, in Greensboro, on March 31, 1991, 35 years ago today.

1980s - #7: When I was in collge, I had a good friend who went to UMass, where thanks to WBCN, he was clued in to the energing punk and new wave scene. One of the band's he introduced all of us to was Boston's own Robin Lane & The Chartbusters.  Their debut disc, with songs like When Things Go Wrong, Without You, and It Will Only Hurt A Little While, just to name 3, were the perfect blend of punk and new wave, all powered by Robin's slightly gravelly, definitely powerful, vocals. On August 10, 1980, I got to see Robyn at the Royal Manor North, one of the countless NJ rock clubs that thrived in the early 1980s.  If you lived in the area at the time, you'll recognize that name, along with other like Creations, the Cuss From Hoe, the Meadowbrook, the Fast Lane, the Stone Pony, etc (go here for a whole blog dedicated to those clubs). In any event, my buddies and I manged to find a spot on the floor directly in front on where Robin was standing.  As the night wore on, and the beer consumption increased, my friends swore that after each song, Robin was looking directly at me, smiling and trying to flirt.  Sure she was! Despite the beer, I was smart enough to know my friends were trying to get me to do or say something embarrassing.  In any event, the show was great and its a shame Robin and The Chartbusters never found mainstream success. This TV soundboard recording captures Robin back in Boston a few months prior to when I saw her, on March 3, 1980, 46 years ago today. Note - we originally posted this a few years ago but only had a single file of the whole performance.  This version has the tracks split out!

2000s - #7: As long time readers of So Many Roads Know, one of my favorite musicians is Marshall Crenshaw. Crenshaw is so under rated that he makes John Hiatt, whose lack of attention I have frequently mourned, look like Mr Popularity. Crenshaw was born in Detroit, MI but got his big break in New York, when he played John Lennon in the off Broadway production, Beatlemania. While in New York, he recorded Someday, Someway, a song that Robert Gordon covered and took to #76 on the Billboard charts in 1981. Crenshaw released his version the next year, which went to #36 in the charts, his only top 40 single. Crenshaw’s first 2 albums are must owns for every rock fan. Famed critic Robert Christgau summed those 2 discs up in one simple word - PERFECT. This soundboard recording captures Crenshaw, in Philadelphia on March 30, 2002, 2 dozen years ago today.

1960s - #7: As a crowd a half a million strong converged on Woodstock, a song that embodied festival's message of the peace and love was climbing the charts in the US. Get Togther, recorded by the The Youngbloods, which was originally released in 1967 to little fanfare, found new life in the summer of 1969. The tune's chorus, "Come on people now, Smile on your brother, Everybody get together, Try to love one another, Right now" seemed to have been written specifically to announce the message of the Woodstock generation. Ironically, The Youngbloods missed the festival, as their invitation arrived late as they were based in a small town north of San Francisco and hard to get in touch with. Their hit tune, however, made an appearance at Woodtsock, as it was the 2nd song played by Richie Havens, who opened the festival. This FM broadcast captures The Youngbloods about 5 months before Woodstock, in San Francisco, on AMarch 30, 1969, 57 years ago today.

2000s - #6: When the Rolling Stones released A Bigger Bang in September 2005, it was their first studio album in almost 8 years. To support the album, the Stones launched a massive world wide tour, that started at Fenway Park, and included a performance at the Super Bowl in February 2006. The tour continued for another 18 months, covering South America, Asia, several return trips to North America and finally ending in Europe in August 2007, 2 years after it began. The Stones set a record by grossing over $558 million for the 147 shows they performed. It truly was a Bigger Bang, especially for the bucks! This soundboard captures the band on March 29, 2006, 20 years ago today, in Sapporo, Japan, about 9 months into the tour.

2020s - #7: In January 27, 2014, Billy Joel launched his residency at Madison Square Garden, an ongoing tour in which he would play the "World's Most Famous Arena" once a month until folks stopped buying ticktes. At his thirteenth consecutive monthly performance (January 9, 2015), Joel broke his 2006 record for the most consecutive sold-out shows at the venue. On July 1, 2015, Joel set the record for most shows at the Garden by a single artist; his 65th all-time show broke the record previously held by Elton John. While the resdiency had to be interupted on occaision for illness, scheduling conflicts, and most seriously, the COVID pandemic, it continued on for over a decade.  This TV SBD recoding captures highlights of the 100th show of the residency (and 146th overall at the Garden), on March 28, 2024, 2 years ago today.  The run would continue for 4 more shows, coming to an end on July 25, 2024, the 104th show of the residency and 150th in total at the World's Most Famous Arena.  Note - in typical TV fashion, all the advertising talked about this performance as Billy's 100th at the Garden, failing to point out it was the 100th since he began playing once a month, not his 100th overall at the venue. He had passed that mark at show 54 of the residency.

1980s - #7: In the early 1980s, James Taylor found his life falling apart around him. His marriage to Carly Simon ended, he was once again hooked on drugs, close friends John Belushi and Dennis Wilson both died tragically, and his music career had stalled. He thought it might be time to retire. Then he was invited to play at the Rock in Rio Festival in Rio De Janiero in January 1985 and his life changed dramatically. In an interview years later, Taylor described the experience as follows: “We put the band together and went down and it was just an amazing response. I played to 300,000 people. They not only knew my music, they knew things about it and were interested in aspects of it that to that point had only interested me. To have that kind of validation right about then was really what I needed. It helped get me back on track.” He penned the tune Only a Dream in Rio as a tribute to that night, filling the song with hopeful lyrics such as “I was there that very day and my heart came back alive.” This soundboard recording captures the rejuvenated JT about 15 months later, in Germany, on March 27, 1986, 4 decades ago today.

The disc would climb to #6 on the Billboard charts in the US, makling it Dylan's first top 10 album in the states. Across the pond, the album would go to the top of the British charts. With tunes such as Mr. Tambourine Man, Subterranean Homesick Blues, It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue, It’s Alright Ma (I'm Only Bleeding), and Maggie's Farm, the album would eventually be considered one of rock's masterpieces, with Rolling Stone ranking it #31 on its 2003 list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. This FM broadcast captures Dylan 5 days after the release of Bringing It All Back Home, in Santa Monica on March 27, 1965, 61 years ago today.

2000s - #5: While the last leg of the Elevation Tour is remembered for U2's remarkable tribute to the victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks, the early parts of the tour were a celebration of the band's amazing new album, All That You Can't Leave Behind. Following the mixed reception to their 1997 album, Pop, U2 returned to their roots for All That You Can't Leave Behind. At the time of the album's release, U2 said on a number of occasions that they were "reapplying for the job of the best band in the world". The public and critics heartily approved, as the disc sold over 12 million copies and won 7 Grammy Awards. The songs Beautiful Day, Walk On, Elevation, and Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of all reached the top 5 on the Billboard charts in the United Kingdom. Of course, many of the album's songs, especially Walk On, New York, and Peace On Earth, would take on new meaning in the wake of the events of 9-11.This soundboard recording captures the band in Sunrise on March 24, 2001, a quarter century ago today, and just about 6 months before that tragic moment.

1970s - #7: In 1971, the Allman Brothers lost founder, spiritual leader and guitar virtuoso, Duane Allman, in a motor cycle accident. In 1972, another motorcycle accident, just blocks from where Duane died, claimed the life of bassist Berry Oakley. Those twin losses would have finished most bands. The Allmans, like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, however, somehow reached new heights of success and popularity in 1973. The single Rambling Man reached #2 of the Billboard charts, and helped spur interest in other Southern rock bands, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Marshall Tucker Band. This soundboard recording captures the Allmans on tour during that historic year, Fort Worth, on March 24, 1973, 53 years ago today.

1979 - #6: In early 1979, The Police went on tour in North America in support of their debut album, Outlandos d’Amour. The tour kicked off on March 1 at the legendary Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles and ran until May 25, with the band criss-crossing the US and Canada. They often played 2 shows a night, and rarely took a day off. Given that the album had flopped when initially released, the band felt compelled to tour relentlessly in hopes of gaining exposure for themselves and airplay for their songs. The strategy seemed to work, as the album eventually climbed to the #23 position on the Billboard charts in the US, and rose all the way to the #2 position in the UK. In addition, 3 singles from the disc – Roxanne, Can’t Stand Losing You and So Lonely - charted in the top 20 in the UK in 1979. Roxanne also climbed to the #32 spot on the US Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the band early on in that tour, on March 23, 1979, 47 years ago today.

Of course, success hadn’t come overnight at all, as Zevon had toiled for years in Los Angeles as a song writer, contributing tunes to albums by artists such as Linda Ronstadt and The Everly Brothers, as well as to the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy. In addition, he had released 2 albums prior to Excitable Boy, though neither garnered much attention. Excitable Boy helped the general public understand what the rock community had know for years, namely that Zevon was an incredibly gifted song writer, able to cast a cynical eye on events, politics, celebrities and even himself. This soundboard recording captures Zevon playing tunes from Excitable Boy at the Park West in Chicago, on March 23, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today.

1990s - #6: In rapid succession in 1995 and 1996, Graham Parker released the albums, 12 Haunted Episodes and Acid bubblegum.  AllMusic noted that the former was an artistic rebirth for Parker, boasting a quiet set of intimate songs about simple, domestic concerns that had tenderness, even when he was bitter.  In contrast,  they noted that the latter blasts out of the speaker with the snarly rage that distinguished his seminal late '70s albums that unfortunately often sounds like a parody of classic Parker instead of an inspired return.  This soundboard recording captures Parker on tour in support of both discs, in Philadelphia, on March 22, 1996, 27 years ago today.

1980s - #4: As long time readers of this blog know, I’ve written extensively about how in 1987 Jerry Garcia returned to the stage from a diabetic coma that almost cost him his life. That year was also a time when the Dead achieved a new level of popularity, as the MTV generation, captivated by the innovative video for Touch Of Grey, climbed on the bus. In addition, the summer of 1987 featured 6 historic shows where the Dead served as Dylan’s back-up band. Moreover, on September 18, 1987 at Madison Square Garden, I attended my favorite Grateful Dead concert, a show which has also been recognized as one of the best of the 1980s. The mood at all of the 1987 concerts was incredibly festive, as Dead Heads rejoiced that the band’s spiritual leader was still “truckin’ on”. Solo Beatles - Re-Posted Links

A few months ago, we reposted every Paul McCartney & Wings show on this site - most o fthose links are still working by the way!

Today we bring you re-posted links for all the solo shows we have from:
  • John Lennon
  • George Harrison
  • Ringo Star
Use the sidebar where it says LABELS to click on the artistsabove to be taken to the posts we've put up for each of them.  Then scroll to the show you want and the new link will be there.

These new links, like all free ones, will expire in 30 to 60 days.  That said, don't hammer the links all at once - that's the fastest way for the host to delete them for overloading traffic.  Grab a show or two a day, then come back the next day for another couple, and so on.

At some point, we'll re-post all the Beatles live shows as well as all of Sir Paul's from his solo career post Wings.  That's a ton of links so bear with us until we have time to get to those!

Enjoy the tunz!

Dunhill Records claimed that the band sold over 40 million record albums during that stretch. Soon after their run of hits ended, the band disbanded in July 1976. They reformed in 1981, and went on tour in 1983. This soundboard recording captures the band in Portland on March 19, 1983, 43 years ago today. 1970s -#4: In early 1973, Paul McCartney agreed to star in a television special for the British ATV network in order to settle his two-year legal dispute with Sir Lew Grade. As the owner of the network and its music publishing division, which included the Beatles' Northern Songs catalogue, Grade had objected to Maccartney crediting his wife Linda as his co-writer since 1971, citing her lack of professional experience as a songwriter and musician. McCartney's commitment to the television project allowed him to retain the 2nd composer's publishing royalties, which otherwise would have been assigned to Grade's company. The TV show, entitled James Paul McCartney, was Paul's first such special since the Beatles' 1967 television film Magical Mystery Tour. The show's closing section featured a tape of McCartney & Wings performing live on March 18, 1973, 53 years ago today. By the way, this early version of Wings featured Henry McCullough on guitar.  He'd be replaced by Jimmy McCulloch  by the time of the Wings Over The World Tour in 1975/1976. One other note - Long Tall Sally was included in the US broadcast of the TV show while The European version of the program rsubstituted it with Hi Hi Hi.

1960s - #5: On March 17, 1967, the Grateful Dead released their self titled debut album, one of a host of incredible first albums from that legendary year. The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Traffic, Janis Joplin, and the Jefferson Airplane (with Grace Slick) also released their debut discs that year. Even then, however, the Dead were far more about what transpired on stage than in the studio. The day after their album hit record stores, March 18, 1967, 59 years ago this very day, the Dead found themselves at Winterland in their home town of San Francisco. Per the Day Of The Dead website, this soundboard recording, is a "quintessential, elemental piece of raw, primal Dead that just cannot be missed."  The show also features one of the only two available live recording of the tune Golden Road To Unlimited Devotion.  Download this one, then while you listen, read more about it here.

01. All I Want To Be (Is By Your Side)
02. Lines On My Face
03. Baby, I Love Your Way

2010s - #7: The 1976 album Frampton Come's Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. The disc that came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album. If you want to read more about the impact of Frampton Comes Alive and the dramatic changes in music in 1976, pick up the book, I Hate New Music, by Dave Thompson. In any event, this webcast recording captures Frampton perfroming 3 songs from his landmark disc for the NPR show, Tiny Desk Concert, 4 decades after the release of his landmark album, on March 17, 2016, 10 years ago today.
