Danko & Manuel 1984 - Back to Back - #1: Despite the fanfare surrounding the Last Waltz, including a full length film and a triple disc album, that November 25, 1976 show was not the last time The Band would play live. While Robbie Robertson moved on to a solo career, the other members of the group would work together in various configurations throughout the 1980s and 1990s. The Lone Star Café in New York, famous for a giant, 40 ft high, iguana sculpture that adorned the building, became a home away from home for the re-formed group. The Band played the club on countless occasions in the late 1980s, often playing 3 or 4 nights in a row, with 2 shows each night, invoking memories of how concerts at venues such as the Fillmore East were scheduled in the Woodstock era! I was fortunate to see them at the Lone Star on October 1, 1985. My table was directly in front of the band, maybe a mere 20 feet away! This soundboard recording captures 2 of the 5 original members of The Band - Rick Danko & Richard Manuel -  playing the early show at The Lone Star on February 1, 1984, 42 years ago today.  Downlaod this one, then come back later today for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Rick Danko - 1977-12-20 - Bottom Line, New York, NY (FM)

1977 - Written by Robbie Robertson and sung by Rick Danko, The Band's Christmas Must be Tonight is an often overlooked holiday gem. Composed in the style of scripture, the tune was Robertson's Yuletide gift to his new son Sebastian. The group didn't do the song any favors by burying it on the 1977 album Islands. a jumbled assortment of tunes thrown together to fulfill their recording contract with Capitol Records so that the Last Waltz soundtrack could be released on Warner.  In any event, this FM broadcast captures Danko out solo in the wake of the Last Waltz, performing the tune at the Bottom Line in New York City on December 20, 1977, 45 years ago today.

Well, at least 4/5 of The Band did, as Robbie Robertson decided to continue his solo ventures rather than rejoin Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Levon Helm and Richard Manuel. The seeds of that reunion were sown back in January of that year, when Danko and Helm launched a tour together that ran through April. This soundboard recording captures the duo’s 3rd show together, from Portland on January 28, 1983, 38 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Jorma Kaukonen  - 1987-11-23 - Troy, NY (SBD)

I've only seen Jorma once, on July 14, 1979 in Asbury Park NJ. While my buddies and I we really enjoyed the acoustic set, we actually left halfway through the electric set, as the band seemed to be jamming endlessly, with little direction or purpose. That may have reflected the fact that Jorma was a bit directionless at the time, even experimenting with some punk music, which was far removed from his musical roots. In any event, this soundboard recording captures Jorma at his acoustic best, with a little help from Rick Danko, in Troy on on November 23, 1987, 32 years ago today.

Gregg Allman & Rick Danko - 1991-06-01 - Lone Star Roadhouse, NY NY (SBD)

When Rick Danko played the Lone Star Roadhouse, a favorite venue for The Band. on June 1, 1991, 28 years ago this very day, instead of his normal band mates, he was joined on stage by the late, great Gregg Allman. The Allman Brothers were  just about to go out on tour, but Gregg got a jump start by playing this gig with Danko.  Its 2 sets, filled with Band & ABB classics. By the way, John Popper of Blues Traveler was one of the freinds playing with Allman and Danko.  According to Popper's biography, "Gregg and Danko we’re getting good and lit backstage and giving Popper some good natured hazing. Apparently, they made Popper go out and play some songs by himself for a while so they could keep partying... " (my thanks to my buddy Pig Street! for that tidbit!)

• According to legend, Duane Allman once said that Robbie Robertson of the band was his favorite guitarist
• The Band, The Grateful Dead and the Allman Brothers all played at Watkins Glenn, on July 28, 1973, a concert which drew 600,000 fans, still the largest single day attendance of any concert ever held in the US.
• The Allmans played a cover o The Night The Drove Old Dixie Down for the album Endless Highway, a tribute to The Band.

Jorma Kaukonen - 1986-06-21 - Kingston, NY (SBD)

In the Summer of 1967, Jorma Kaukonen was playing lead guitar for the Jefferson Airplane, one of the leading lights of the counter culture's musical revolution. Kaukonen was actually responsible for the band's name, inspired by a friend who had named his dog  "Blind Lemon Jefferson Airplane".  In any event, this soundboard captures Jorma almost 2 decades after the Summer of Love, in Kingston on June 21, 1986, 31 years ago today.
