1984: Bruce Cockburn was born in Canada in 1945, and established a strong following in that country after he began his musical career. He didn’t have much impact in the US until 1980 when his single, Wondering Where The Lions Are, went to #21 on the Billboard charts. Then, his 1984 album Stealing Fire, produced the well known singles Lovers In A Dangerous Time and If I Had A Rocket Launcher.  This FM broadcast captures Cockburn on tour in support of Stealing Fire, in Germnay, on September 11, 1984, 42 years ago today.

1999 - We've brought you various shows from John Kadlecik over the last few years, but today we finally give you one from the band where he got his start, Dark Star Orchestra (DSO).  The tale behind DSO goes as follows: "After thumbing through the 1990 edition of DeadBase, John Kadlecik hit on the idea of performing complete Grateful Dead shows. Not everyone with whom he shared the concept had a positive reaction but, he says, "I was able to talk the band I was in at the time, Hairball Willie, into playing an entire second set as a contest. I can't remember the exact show now, although it had to be either 4-25-77 or 5-25-77. Nobody guessed correctly, but a few got the year right and the closest guess received some band merchandise. But that was pretty much it for a while.  In 1997 as John was looking to form a new band, a mutual friend suggested Scott Larned. "I had heard great things about Scott back when he was playing with the Junction. So I called him, and when he said 'I've got this idea about covering entire shows out of DeadBase,' I knew something was going to happen. John also called up  Kevin Rosen to play bass and local singer Lisa Mackey to play the part of Donna Godchaux. The band name came in a brainstorm session that discarded other likely candidates (such as "Terrapin Nation".) Through friend and club owner Ray Quinn they secured four Tuesday night gigs at Martyrs' in Chicago.  The first Tuesday (Nov. 11, 1997) saw only 78 people, the next week doubled that, the third exponentially doubled that and by the fourth week they had sold out. Obviously there was a demand for this. They signed on for four more weeks. By year's end they became the regular Tuesday night houseband routinely selling out the room."  Kadlecik got so good at playing the role of Jerry Garcia that in 2009 he was invited by original Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh to join Furthur.  In any event, this soundboard recording captures DSO on September 10, 1999, 27 years ago today.  As was custom at the time, they recreated a Dead show in its entirety, in this case a show from Philadelpia exactly 9 years prior to the day!

1994: In 1994, Warren Haynes and bassist Allen Woody of The Allman Brothers Band launched a side project called Gov’t Mule. Haynes and Woody, who were fans of power trios such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, recruited Matt Abts to handle the drums. The new band, affectionately known to its fans as The Mule, released their self titled debut album in October 1995. This soundboard recording captures them a little over a year prior to the release of that disc, on September 10, 1994, 32 years ago today, at Wetlands in New York City.

1989: If you’re as old as I am, you’ll remember Paul Masson Wines, and their slogan,“we shall sell no wine before its time.” That line was delivered in ultra serious tones by Orson Welles, who was eventually fired from that job when he admitted on talk show that he never drank Paul Masson wine. In any event, when I was watching those commercials as a kid, I never imagined that one day, Paul Masson wines would be associated with rock and roll. Yet, at some point in the late 1980s, perhaps recognizing that the Woodstock generation was gettting older and its tastes in beverages was changing, the vineyard began hosting rock concerts. This soundboard matrix recording captures Santana at the winery on September 9, 1989, 37 years ago today. By the way, now now known as the Mountain Winery, the venue’s annual concert series features up to 60 shows each summer.

1984: In June 1983, some 6 ½ years after the Last Waltz, The Band reunited. Well, at least 4/5 of the original group did, as Robbie Robertson chose to follow his own path. Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Richard Manuel played a series of small clubs in the summer of 1983, followed by a short run of shows in Japan in August, after which they launched an extended East Coast tour in the fall. The reunion was deemed a success, and the quartet went back out on the road in early 1984, playing almost continuously until September of that year. This sounboard recording captures them in Foxboro on September 8, 1984, 42 years ago today, leading in for Neil Young.

Steve Winwood - 1986-09-07 - Saratoga NY (SBD)

1986: After Traffic finally disbanded in 1974, Winwood launched a solo recording career. He had some chart success with his 1980 album Arc Of The Diver, but his 1982 disc, Taking Back The Night, did not fare as well. In 1986, however, Winwood released Back In The High Life, an album’s whose title accurately foreshadowed what transpired next. The disc sold over 5 million copies, and the single, Higher Love, went to #1. Winwood won 2 Grammy’s for the album, and was truly back on top of the rock world. This concert catches him the height of his solo success, playing a set filled with Traffic classics as well as tunes from his chart-topping album, in Saratoga, on September 7, 1986, 4 decades ago today. The opening Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys into Glad is a real highlight – just listen to the audience reaction when you download and play this one!

1991: As the decade of the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg's tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Greg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This TV soundboard recording captures the band in Mansfield on September 6, 1991, 35 years ago today.

For those of you who are old like me, you'll remember when Labor Day weekend meant the Jerry Lewis telethon to raise money to find a cure for Muscular Dystrophy. The telethon would start Sunday night and run through Labor Day, with Lewis and countless guest stars appealing to viwers at home to call and donate. Sammy Davis Jr made numerous appearance on the telethon throughout the 1980s to help his old friend Jerry's cause.  This TV soundboard recording captures him at the 1988 telethon, in Las Vegas on September 5, 1988, 38 years ago today.

1982:  Today we bring you another one from the 1982 US Festival, a soundboard recording of a portion of  Fleetwood Mac's set from Day 3, September 5, 1982, 44 years ago today. In addition to Fleetwood Mac, the third day of the festival featured other more established rock acts, such Jimy Buffett, Jackson Brown, and The Grateful Dead.  Fleetwood Mac was on tour in support their 1982 disc, Mirage, which spent 5 weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts and certified as Double Platinum. The disc yielded 3 hit singles - Hold Me which went to at #4 on the Billboard charts, Love in Store which went to #22, and Gypsy, which reached #12.

Tom Petty - 1982-09-04 - US Festival, San Bernadino, CA (TV SBD)

1982: In the early 1980’s, Steve Wozniak, co-founder of Apple, had a vision. He would bring a large scale rock and roll festival to Southern California that would unite music, television, computer technology, and people, all while addressing logistical issues such as overcrowding, traffic control, and lack of facilities that had plagued earlier festivals. Thus, the US Festivals were born. Somehow, he pulled it off twice, in September 1982 and May 1983, hosting 2 events that were each attended by hundreds of thousands of fans with minimal issues, despite 115-degree heat at the first US show. The two festivals included large air-conditioned tents featuring the US Festival Technology Exposition, a dazzling display of then-cutting edge computers, software, and electronic music devices. Bill Graham handled booking and running the concerts, which clearly contributed to their operational success. Of course, Wozniak’s deep pockets didn’t hurt, as he could afford to lose almost $20 million on the 2 festivals. At the first festival, days 1 and 2 primarily featured new wave and punk bands such as The Clash, The Police, The B52’s, The Talking Heads, Pat Benatar ands Tom Petty. Black Crowes - 1995-09-03 - Mountain View, CA (SBD) 

1995: In November 1994, The Black Crowes released their 3rd album, entitled Amorica. The album cover, which featured a picture taken from a 1976 bi-centennial edition of Hustler that showed a bikini bottom that failed to cover all of a women’s pubic hair, generated a host of controversy. Some retailers refused to carry the album until the record company re-issued the disc with an alternate cover. Despite the controversy - or maybe because of it - Amorica climbed to #11 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the Black Crowes on tour in support of their controversial album, headlining the H.O.R.D.E. Festival, in Mountain View on September 3, 1995, 31 years ago today.

1986: In August 1986, Bruce Hornsby and the Range released their debut album, The Way It Is. The band also released the title track as the first single from the album and it would become Hornsby’s biggest selling song to date. Driven by the success of the single, the album climbed to #3 on the charts! Critical acclaim accompanied the album’s chart success. Then on February 24, 1987, he capped off an incredible debut year by winning a Grammy for Best New Artist! This FM Broadcast captures him in Philadelphia on September 3, 1986, 4 decades ago today and about a month after The WAy It Is hit record stores. In addition to playing the entire album, Hornsby provided a glimpse into his future as a member of the Grateful Dead, playinb a cover of I Know You Rider.

Steely Dan - 1994-09-02 - Dallas, TX (SBD)

After an Independence Day concert in Santa Monica in 1974, Steely Dan retired from touring to focus on studio recordings. Band leaders Walter Becker and Donald Fagan had tired of the grind associated with live performing and preferred to focus on song writing and album production. After producing 4 more albums (Kati Lied, The Royal Scam, Aja & Gaucho) between 1975 and 1980, Becker and Fagan announced a split in their partnership in June 1981. It would be another 12 years before the two would formally reunite, ironically, to produce 2 solo albums. Becker produced Fagan’s album Kamakiriad, while Fagan returned the favor by serving as co-producer on Becker’s 11 Tracks of Whack. Even more irony followed, as the two then reformed Steely Dan, not to record an album, but to go on tour! While their 2 solo albums didn’t sell all that well, their live concerts received rave reviews. They had such a good time on the road in 1993, they “did it again’ in 1994. 1989: In 1972, the Jefferson Airplane broke up, then found new life as Jefferson Starship, and later just Starship. But in 1989, 20 years after Woodtstock, for a brief moment the Jefferson Airplane flew once again. Original members Paul Kantner, Marty Balin, Jack Cassady, Jorma Kaukonen and Grace Slick reunited to record an album and tour. This soundboard recording captures the Airplane during that reunion tour, at the Garden State Arts Center in Holmdel, NJ on September 2, 1989, 37 years ago today.

Warren Zevon - 1996-09-01 - Laytonville, CA (SBD)

1996: After achieving commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980’s, Warren Zevon’s career took a host of twists and turns. He battled alcoholism and obsessive compulsive disorder. He  also served as musical coordinator and occasional guitarist for an ad-hoc rock music group called the Rock Bottom Remainders, a collection of writers performing rock and roll standards at book fairs and other events. The group included Stephen King, Dave Barry, Matt Groening and Amy Tan, just to name a few. He occasionally filled in for Paul Schaffer as bandleader for David Letterman’s Late Night Show. And he continued to release albums and tour. This soundboard recording captures him in Laytonville on September 1, 1996, 3 decades ago today, on tour in support of his 1995 album, Mutineer.

Bruce Springsteen - 1985-09-01 - East Rutherford, NJ (Ex Aud)

1985: On June 29, 1984, Bruce Springsteen launched the Born In The USA tour in support of the album of the same name, a 156 show extravaganza that ran until October 5, 1985. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed in the top 10 for the duration if the entire tour. Robert Christgau gave the album an A+ grade, ranking it as the best disc of 1984. Rolling Stone gave it a 5 star review, and would eventually rank it as #85 on its list of the 500 best albums of all time. The video for Dancing In The Dark, the first single from the album, received extensive airplay on MTv which helped propel it to the #2 position on the Billboard singles charts. In all, the album would yield seven top 10 singles. The tour, which featured Nils Lofgren on guitar in place of Miami Steve Van Zandt, who had left the E-Street Band to pursue a solo career. The 1985 portion of the tour saw Springsteen visit Asia, Australia and Europe, before returning to the US to play his first American outdoor stadium shows, including 6 shows in August at Giants Stadium in his home state of New Jersey.  I had tickets for the August 30th show, but due to a tremendous rain storm that concert had to be moved until September 1.  This excellent audience recording captures that rescheduled show, which toook place 41 years ago today, a 30 song marathon that included Santa Claus Is Coming To Town to end the night! Chistmas came early for all of us at Giants Stadium that night!

Bob Weir - 1991-08-31 - Pasadena, CA (SBD)

While I went to 50 Grateful Dead concerts, I only saw Bob Weir solo once, in July 1992, as mentioned in our Bruce Cockburn post earlier this month.  That show was at the Meadowlands Summer Fest, which turned out to be a stage and seats set up in the parking lot at Giants Stadium. Oh the things promoter John Scher did to run a concert and make a bucks - you'll find even more in my book.

This soundboard recording captures Weir about a year earlier, in Pasadena on August 31, 1991, 35 years ago today.  Weir was accompanied by Rob Wasserman.  The two started working together in the late 1980s as a duo, and then formed the core of Ratdog, which in 1995, played their first show on August 8, 1995, the night before Jerry Garcia passed away.

The Go Go's - 1981-08-31 - Cherry Hill, NJ (FM)

Believe it or not, I've seen the Go Gos on 3 occasions - in November 1981 at the Palladium in New York, in January 1982 leading in for the Police at Madison Square Garden, and then again in July 2000 on a bill with the B52s and Psychedelic Furs.

Of course the height of their success came in the early 1980s. In June 1981, The Go Go's released the single, We Got The Beat, and the accompanying video became a mainstay om the then fledgling MTV channel. A month later, the band released the album Beauty and The Beat, which steadily climbed the charts until it reached the top spot, where it remained for 6 weeks. The Go Go's had taken the music world by storm, and made history in the process. Beauty and The Beat became the first album entirely written and performed by an all-female band to top the charts. Today the disc is recognized as one of the cornerstones of the new wave movement. This FM broadcast captures them during those heady days on August 31, 1981, 45 years ago today,  at the Emerald City night club in Cherry Hill, NJ. The Police - 2007-08-30 - Stockholm, Sweden (Ex Aud) 

I saw The Police just once, in January 1982, at Madison Square Garden, but what a historic show it was. The Go Gos, who opened, had the #1 album on the Billboard charts at the time. The Police, who headlined, had the #2 album on those charts! New Wave had arrived, commanding the charts and selling out "The World's Most Famous Arena."

Today we skip ahead over 2 decades from that legenday show. On February 11, 2007, The Police reunited after being apart for almost 20 years for a performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. As they took the stage for the Grammy’s, the trio proclaimed "Ladies and gentlemen, we are The Police, and we're back!” The next day, at a press conference at the Whisky a Go Go, they announced they would launch a world tour starting in Vancouver on May 28. The tour would last well over a year, with the final show played held on August 7, 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Police sold 3.7 million tickets and grossed $358 million during their reunion sojourn, making it the third-highest-grossing tour of all-time at its conclusion. This excellent audience recording captures The Police on August 30, 2007, 19 years ago today, in Stockholm near the beginning of their historic reunion tour.

I've seen James Taylor just once, last year at the PNC Bank Arts Center, on August 30, 2025, exactly 1 year ago today. It was a perfect night of folk rock under a starlit late summer sky.
