Dickey Betts - 1974-11-04 - Hempstead, NY (FM)

1974 - In September 1974, fresh off the chart topping success of the Allman Brother's album Brothers and Sisters, Dickey Betts released his first solo album entitled Highway Call. The album featured a more country sound, with Betts backed by legendary fiddle player Vassar Clements and acoustic guitarist Jeff Hanna. The disc was a commercial success, climbimg to #19 on the Billboard charts. Just about 2 months after the album's release, on Novemeber 4, 1974, 52 years ago today, Betts, accompanied by Clements, played a live set at Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead that featured tracks from the album alongside some Allman Brother's classics.  This FM broadcast captures that show, along with interviews with both Betts and Clements.

Bruce Springsteen - 1976-11-04 - Palladium, New York, NY (FM) 

1976: On September 15, 1976, the judge in the lawsuit between Springsteen and ex-manager Mike Appel ruled that Bruce was enjoined from any further recording with Columbia Records until the case was resolved. In addition, proceeds from Born To Run were tied up in various accounting disputes, some related to the lawsuit, so Bruce had no source of income. So, he went back out on the roads starting on September 26, for a brief run pf shows, which finished with 6 nights at The Palladium in New York, This FM Broadcast captures the final night of that run, on November 4, 1976, 50 years ago today. And what a finale it was. A pre-show bomb hoax results in Bruce jokingly asking the audience to look under their seats (obviously a far different atmosphere than today's post 9-11 world). Springsteen delivers stunning cover versions of It’s My Life and We Gotta Get Out Of This Place. To top it off, Ronnie Spector guests on three of her most famous Ronettes-era hits, all given inspired arrangements by the E Street Band. The lawsuits may have kept Bruce out of the studio, but it was clear he still ruled on stage.

Linda Ronstadt - 1976-11-03 - Los Angeles, CA (FM)

1976: In August 1976, Linda Ronstadt released the album Hasten Down The Wind, which became her 3rd straight million selling disc, making her the first female artist in history to accomplish that feat. The album also earned Linda her second of a record 10 Grammy Awards for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance The album was different from 1974's Heart Like A Wheel and 1975's Prisoner In Disguise in that she chose to showcase new songwriters as opposed to country rock tunes. The title track, for example was written by then up and coming songwriter Warren Zevon. One of the most famous tracks from the album, Someone To Lay Down Beside Me, was composed by the then little known Karla Bonoff. The album received huge critical acclaim, and also spent several weeks in the top 3 on the Billboard charts. Ronstadt went on tour later that year in support of the album, and this soundboard captures her a half century ago today, November 3, 1976, in Los Angeles!

Allman Brothers Band - 1972-11-02 - Hempstead, NY (FM)

1972: On November 2, 1972, 54 years ago today, the Allman Brothers Band made an appearance on ABC In Concert, as captured in this TV soundboard recording.  The show, which would be broadcast on December 8, would mark the debut of keyboardist Chuck Leavell.  It would also be the last time Berry Oakley wpuld play with the Allmans. Less than 2 weeks after this show was recorded , the Allman's would suffer another loss, Oakley died in motorcylce accident, just blocks from the site of Duane's fatal crash a year earlier.

Grateful Dead - 1977-11-01 - Detroit, MI (SBD)

1977: We open November with a show from the band I saw live most often, from the very year I attended my first of 50 of their concerts. On September 3, 1977, me, my buddies and, along with 150,000 others, made the pilgrimage to Englishtown NJ, to see the Grateful Dead play the largest concert in the state's history. The day was hot - over 100 degrees - and the band was even hotter. Another performance that added to the legend of 1977. I would see 49 more after that, at least 1 show every year except 1982, 1984, 1986 and 1992, with the last show being June 18, 1995, just 2 month's before we lost Jerry Garcia. My long strange trip with the Dead was short compared to folks who saw hundreds of concerts, but it was memorable, as over a dozen shows that I attended were good enough to be officially released. It's been 31 years since we lost Jerry, and I still miss the magic. Speaking of magic, this soundboard from recording captures the Dead on November 1, 1977, 49 years ago today, in Detroit, just 2 months after Englistown. As the fall tour wound to a close in November, the band was still in peak form, as evidenced by the fact that the November 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th shows were all officially released. 

 

Response To All The Recent Comments About Link Issues - Please Read Carefully & Save For Future Reference

Just returned from a week of vacation and came across numerous comments about issues with download links.  Too many to repond to individually so let me answer alll of them with this post.

As you know, we had to introduce a 2 step process to download shows due to some new Google Blogger restrictions.

• The link in the post takes you to Mediafire, where you can download an MD file that contains the link to the music
• Simply open that MD file using Notepad or Word, copy the link you find at the top of the page, paste it into your browser, and hit enter.  You'll be taken to mirrored.to, which is the same multi-host platform we have been using for years.  Then choose one of the 12 hosts (I recommend Mediafire, SEND, GoFile or Buzzheavier as the easiest to use) and download the show.

We have been using the above process since October 18.  I've checked every link from October 18 until today and all are working fine. The problem folks may be encountering is that sometimes the MD file has a glitch where it may add some \ charcters to the mirrored.to link that shouldn't be there. Delete those \ characters and the link should work. 

As of tomorrow, 11/1 we will start using a TXT file instead of an MD file. The TXT file can be read via Notepad and should eliminate any issues with the extra \ characters in the mirrored.to link. (Please only use Notepad to open the TXT File - if you open it with WORD or anything else, you'll get the extra \ character issue.)

Billy Joel was part of the star studded 1999 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class, that also included Bruce Springsteen, Dusty Springfield, Curtis Mayfield, Del Shannon, Sir Paul McCartney, just to name a few.  Joel licked off the perfromances with Only The Good Die Young, the was joined by Bonnie Raitt to perform Runaway in honor of Shannon. He also sat in as Macca sang Let It Be!

This souindboard recording captures Joel in Miami on Octoiber 31, 1977, 49 years ago today, on the cusp of his hige commercial breakthrough with the album The Starnger.  That disc, released about a month earlier, would soon take the world by storm, climbing to #2 on the US charts, and selling over 10 million copies, becoming Columbia Records largest selling album up to that time. The disc yielded 4 top 25 singles, Just the Way You Are at #3, Movin' Out (Anthony's Song) at #17, Only the Good Die Young at #24, and "She's Always a Woman at #17. In addition, Scenes From An Italian Restaurant, became a favorite of FM radio stations.

The Band were part of the 1994 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class, along with John Lennon, the Grateful Dead, The Animals, and Bob Marley, just to name a few other inductees that year.  While Robbie Robertson was in attendance, Levon Helm decided not to show up due to long running issues with Robertson. Eric Clapton handled the induction speech and also sat in with the groupo when they performed The Weight.

This TV soundboard recording captures The Band on Saturday Night Live on October 30, 1976, a half century ago today.  Less than a month later, they would play the legendary LAst Waltz concert in San Francisco, retiring from live performing.  Of course, that turmed out to be just temporarly, as 4/5 of the group (all but Robertson) reunited in 1983.

Bob Seger was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2004, aong with George Harrison, Prince, Traffic, Jackson Browne, and ZZ Top. As mentioned in our Tom Petty post earlier today, the Hall confounded folks by including the Heartbreakers with Petty but ignoring the Sil ver Bullet Band when it came to Seger. 

This soundboard recording captures Seger, sans the silver Bullet Band, but with Jason Aldean on October 28, 2014, a dozen years ago today.  The two were filming an episode of the long running show, CMT Crossroads, which pairs which pairs country music artists with musicians from other music genres.

Tom Petty - 1989-10-28 - Mountain View, CA (SBD) 

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 2002, alongside The Ramones and Taking Heads, just to name 2 other members of the class.  Petty's induction continued the Hall's confusing position regarding backing bands.  For example, the Heartbreakers got in with Petty, but 3 years earlier, the E-Street band was left out when Springteen was inducted (that egregious error was finally corrected in 2014). Another example of that issue will be found in our next post later today.

This soundboard recoding captures Petty and the Heartbreakers at the Bridge School Benefit on October 28, 1989, 37 years ago today. Every year from 1986 to 2016, with the exception of 1987, Neil Young hosted the benefit show to raise funds to help children with severe speech and physical impairments. For Neil, the cause was a personal one, as his both his sons Ben and Zeke are afflicted with cerebral palsy.

As mentioned earlier this month, Muddy Waters was one of 3 blues legends who were iinducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987, with the other 2 being BB King and Bo Diddley.  That was the largest induction class in the Hall's lomg history.

Johnny Cash - 1972-10-27 - Tulsa, OK (SBD)

Johnny Cash, along with wife June Carter Cash, appeared at the first Farm Aid in 1985, one of the many country legends such as Glen Campbell, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and of course, founder Willie Nelson, to perform at the inaugural event.  Cash returned in 1993, performing as part of The Highwaymen.

This soundbaord recording captures The Man In Black 13 years before the first Farm Aid, perfroming in Tulsa on October 27, 1972, 55 years ago today.  That year, Cash released the album A Thing Called Love, which climbed to #2 on the country charts as did the the title track. Cash is joined by his wife Jiune, who has mentioned appeared with him at the first Farm Aid and Carl Perkins, who performed at the 1990 edition of the festival.

November's Theme At So Many Roads

For November 2026, our theme will be The 1970s. 

Few decades in music history were marked by as many transitions as the period from 1970 to 1979.The Beatles broke up, and Elvis Presley left us way too soon. The Stones did some of their finest work early in the 1970's, only to fall prey to the excesses of the times, before rebounding near the end of the decade. Some stalwarts of the 1960s, such as the Grateful Dead and CSNY, took extended time off in the 1970s. Other Woodstock era groups underwent a metamorphosis, emerging in a new form. For example, the Jefferson Airplane became the Starship, while the Byrds broke up but reemerged as McGuinn, Clark and Hillman. Bob Dylan underwent his own series of dramatic changes, producing masterpieces such as Desire and Blood on Tracks, and disasters such as Street Legal, then converting to Christianity and recording Slow Train Coming. Led Zeppelin became the biggest band in the world, paving the way for the rise of heavy metal. New genres of rock emerged, such as punk, new wave, progressive rock and glam rock. Bruce Springsteen brought the Jersey Rock scene to national prominence. Singer/song writers such as Billy Joel, Elton John and James Taylor took center stage on the rock scene. Artists such as Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles created a highly polished sound that would come to be known as album oriented rock. Multi-platinum mega albums, such as Frampton Comes Alive, Hotel California and Rumours ruled the charts. And everybody seemed to play live at Budokan. Such were the 1970's, and you'll get a taste of all of it in November here at So Many Roads!

The Police - 1979-10-26 - Miami, FL (FM)

The Police entered the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame as part of the Class of 2003, which also featured fellow New Wave/Punk artists Elvis Costello & The Clash.  Gwen Stefani made the induction speech and the band played 3 songs during the ceremony - Roxanne, Message In A Bottle, and Every Breath You Take.

This FM broadcast captures the band near the start of their Hall Of Fame career, in Miami on October 26, 1979, 47 years ago today.  The band was on tour in suppior of their 2nd album, Regatta De Blanc, which had been released in September. That disc would reach the #25 spot on the Billboard charts in the US. It would be even more successful in the UK, climbing all the way to #1.

Neil Young - 1986-10-25 - Atlanta, GA (SBD)

Like the Allman Brothers who we discussed earlier this month, Neil Young was another member of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 1995, which featured the induction of Led Zeppelin. For Neil, it was his second induction, the first having come two years earlier as a member of Buffalo Springfield.

This soundboard recording captures Neil in Atlanta on October 25, 1986, 4 decades ago today.  That tour with Crazy Horse was a comeback for Young, who spent the early part of the decade recording music that confounded his fans and critics alike. After signing on with Geffen Records, he released a series of albums that hardle included the stuff folks had come to know and love: Trans in 1982, an experiment in electronic music, Everybody's Rockin' in 1983, a rockabilly album with the Shocking Pinks, and Old Ways in 1985, a country music disc. In fact, his own record label sued him for making music that was "unrepresentative of himself".  The 1986 In A Rusted Out Garage tour found Neil once again stomping around on stage, with Crazy Horse at his side, playing the fierce, ragged, searing music that had become his hallmark.

On January 12, 1993, at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles, Cream was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. When Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce took the stage that night, it marked the first time in 25 years that they had played together in front of a live audience. For a few moments, all the tensions and anger that had ripped the band apart were forgotten, as Cream demonstrated why they were part of rock royalty, playing 3 of their classic tunes -- Sunshine of Your Love, Born Under A Bad Sign, and Crossroads. The band had rehearsed for their induction the previous day at the Power Plant Studios in LA. They had been wary about performing, but once they began to rehearse, it was as if they had never been apart. Of course, despite how well the 2 days went, it would be another 12 years before Cream again played together on stage! By the way, for EC, it was the 2nd of his record 3 inductions, the other 2 coming in 1992 as a member of the Yardbirds and then in 2000 as a solo artist.

This excellent audience recording captures Cream during that reunion a dozen years after their induction, on the 2nd of 3 nights at Madison Square Garden, on October 25, 2005, 21 years ago today.  Earlier in the year, they had played 4 nights at the Royal Albert Hall in London on May 2, 3, 5 and 6.  Those 7 shows were the last time thr trio ever played together.

Smokey Robinson was elected to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987, as part of the largest class in the institutions's history! The inductees included blues legends, BB King, Bo Diddley, and Muddy Waters, as well as soul greats Aretha Franklin, the first woman ever inducted to the hall, Marvin Gaye, and Jackie Wilson. Early rock legends such as Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Ricky Nelson, and Bill Haley also were part of the class of 1987. During the ceremony, Smokey led an all star jam on Going To A Go-Go.

Santana - 1979-10-24 - Osaka, Japan (FM)

Santana was part of the 1998 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class that also featured The Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and The Mama's & The Papas. Interestingly, while Peter Green was inducted with Fleetwood Mac, he performed alongside Santana on Black Magic Women, a song he wrote during his tenure with Fleetwood Mac, but that was made famous by Santana.  

This soundboard recording captures Santana in Japan, on October 24, 1979, 47 years ago today. At the time, Santana began to move away from the traditional fusion of Latin, jazz, rock and blues toward a more album oriented rock (AOR) sound. That transition began with the album Inner Secrets in 1978, and continued on with Marathon in 1979 and Zeebop in 1981.

Changes At So Many Roads - Updates - Please Read Carefully

Recently, Google Blogger posted new terms of service which appear to be taking a stronger stance about downloads of music and video files.

To be safe, we're made some changes here at So Many Roads effective October 18:

• mentions of downloads will vanish from the site - such as the Download Tutorial and Re-Post policy.

• download links will no longer go directly to the music files - rather, they will download a text file that will contain the link to the music. The text file is MD format which can be read via Notepad - just like a text file - or Word. Be careful if you open the MD file in Notepad using Syntax view or if you open in Word as that may add some \ charcters to mirrored.to link that shouldn't be there. Delete those \ and it should work.

• the text file will also contain our download tutorial and the re-post policy.

So, the site wil be a little less instructive and transparent, while the download process wil be a bit more cumbersome, but I'm trying my best to keep this place afloat.

I'll post this message a few more times between now and November 1,  After that, all communication oin this subject will be done via comments under posts.  You'll only see another post on this matter if we have to make any further changes.

Bob Dylan - 1998-10-23 - Minneapolis, MN (SBD)

The 1988 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class included arguably the greatest British and American rock performers of all time, The Beatles and Bob Dylan. The former Mr. Robert Zimmerman was inducted by Bruce Springsteen, one of the countless rock stars who at one point in their carrer was labeled the "next Bob Dylan".  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone at the ceremony supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second. 

This soundboard recording captures Dylan ten years aftter his induction, on October 23, 1998, 28 years ago today, in Minneapolis. Dylan was on tour in support of his 30th studio album, Time Out Of Mind, which had been released in September 1997. The disc was a comeback for Dylan, who had not released any original material in over 7 years. Time Out Of Mind reached #10 on the Billboard charts in the US and won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Contemporary Folk Album and Best Male Rock Vocal Performance.

Ray Charles was part of the introductory Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Class of 1986, alonside side such legends as Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, James Brown, Little Richard, and Jerry Lee Lewis.  Of course, what else would you expect for a man nicknamed GENIUS.
