1990s - #6: In 1999, after a long, 11 year separation, Bruce Springsteen, decided, to paraphrase the immortal words of John Belushi in The Blue Brothers, to put the band back together. The Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band reunion tour launched in April 1999 and stretched until July 2000. On highpoint of the tour was a record sold-out, 15-show run at Continental Airlines Arena in New Jersey. Another was a 10-night, sold-out engagement at New York City's Madison Square Garden. At key points in each show, usually during Tenth Avenue Freezeout and his newest song, Land of Hope and Dreams, Springsteen played the role of preacher, calling on his disciples in the crowd to feel the healing power of the Ministry of Rock and Roll. Another special moment each night occurred during If I Should Fall Behind, a song written while Springsteen was away from the E Street band. With the band reunited, the song became a vow of togetherness, with Springsteen, wife Patti Scialfa, Steve Van Zandt, Nils Lofgren, and The Big Man, Clarence Clemons each singing a verse, promising to wait for each other. It was clear that the Boss was glad to be back with his old comrades. This IEM Audience matrix recording captures Bruce & E-Streeters during the early stages of their reunion tour, on November 18, 1999, 26 years ago today, in Minneapolis.

2000s -#5: The tragic events of Sept 11, 2001 brought an outpouring of support for the city of New York from the rock and roll community..From the America: A Tribute to Heroes telethon about a week after the attack to the Concert for New York in October, rock’s biggest stars – Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Neil Young, Bill Joel, The Who, U2, and David Bowie, just to name a few – turned out to support the battered, but always resilient city. Few gave as much as did New Jersey’s own Bruce Springsteen. He opened the telethon with the song My City of Ruins, originally written for Asbury Park, but now transformed into “a prayer for our fallen brothers and sisters." From that tune emerged an entire album dedicated to the memory of 9-11, an album fittingly titled The Rising, because New York would not bow down to the terrorists who attempted to destroy her will. Springsteen’s work on The Rising was some of the best of his career. When the album debuted in early 2002, it went straight to #1 on the charts, with glowing reviews from the critics. Springsteen took his message of hope on the road, launching The Rising Tour on August 7, 2002, at the Meadowlands Arena in New Jersey. This soundboard recording captures Bruce & The E-Street Band during that historic tour, in Tampa on November 24, 2002, 23 years ago today.

2000s - #4: When you spend the first 3 decades of your career alongside one of the greatest guitarists in history (namely, the one and only Jerry Garcia), you have to think carefully about who you choose to be your lead guitarist when you start your own band. So, when Phil Lesh launched Phil & Friends in 1998, he made sure that his rotating ensemble always had a Guitar God at the helm. Jorma Kaukonen, Trey Anastaiso, Derek Trucks, Steve Kimock, and Stanley Jordan are just a few of the names that have played lead guitar for Phil. Another is Warren Haynes, who can be heard loud and clear on this FM broadcast from Boston from November 23, 2001, 2 dozen years ago today. Warren, who has also lit up the stage for the Allman Brothers and Govt Mule, as well as during his own solo shows, was ranked #23 on Rolling Stone's 2003 list of the top guitarists, though he was inexplicably left off the 2011 version of the list. I won't even try to explain that one. The show also features Jimmy Herring, who despite stints with Widespread Panic, The Dead, the Other Ones, the Allman Brothers, Aquarium Rescue Unit and, of course Phil & Friends, just never seems to get any recognition for his amazing guitar work. The incredible 2001 line up also featured drummer John Molo and keyboard plater Rob Barraco.

2000s - #3: During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 years, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Dead & Company, Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros. This soundboard recording captures Weir and Ratdog in Norfolk on November 22, 2000, a quarter century today.

This new edition adds over 250 pages of brand new content including:
  • updates elements to every section of the book – the rules, the essays, the concert summaries, and the statistics.
  • more tales from my 20th century concert adventures that I dredged out of my memory that didn't make the first edition
  • details of all the shows I’ve attended since 2021, after the first edition was published, until today
  • complete re-writes of Rules #2, #5, #6, #7, # 8 and #10, as well as the Grateful Dead essay, have been almost completely re-written.
  • consolidating the Song Selection essays from three to two but adding more songs to each remaining chapter in the process, doubling the number of tunes covered from 40 to 80.

  • adding numerous new charts/tables to the statistics section
  • quadrupling the number of setlists from shows I attended.
  • re-editing the entire book to clean up some areas that either seemed cumbersome or didn’t flow well

Due to the pandemic, the tour stretched over 5 years, encompassing more than 300 shows across 3 continents, and grossing almost $940 milllion in revenue before coming to an end on July 8, 2023 in  Sweden. Along the way, Elton played his final US shows on November 17, 19, and 20 at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. Elton chose Los Angeles as a "Circle of Life" moment - his first US performances had been at the Troubador night club in the City of Angels in 1970!  In addition, Elton had played 2 legendary concerts at Dodger Stadium in 1975, when he was at the peak of his career, making him the first artist since The Beatles to play that venue. 1990s - #4: In the early 1990s, Southside Johnny & Little Steven teamed up on numerous occasions for radio shows to raise money for Why Hunger and Hungerthon. This FM broadcast captures them in New York on November 19, 1995, 3 decades ago today. As always, the duo played a host of unusual covers, in addition to their own tunes. And if you enjoy this one, the best way to say thank you is to go here and make a donation to this worthy cause.

1970s - #5: In several posts here at So Many Roads, we’ve discussed the Live From The Record Plant series of shows that KSAN-FM would broadcast each week during the early 1970s. Those programs, which originated from Sausalito CA, featured rock artists playing live before a small studio audience. Not to be outdone, the East Coast had a similar series of shows broadcast on WLIR-FM from Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead NY. The roster for those broadcasts included Billy Joel, Lou Reed, Peter Frampton, Little Feat, The Band, Jackson Browne, The Doobie Brothers, and the Marshall Tucker Band, just to name a few. This WLIR-FM broadcast from the Ultrasonic Studios features Hall & Oates, from November 18, 1973, 52 years ago today. The dDuo feature tracks from their recently released album, abandoned Lunceonette, including the sing;e She's Gone, which initially did not farewell on the charts, but when re-released in 1976, climbed all the way to the #7 spot on the charts.

Just In Time For The Holidays: The Updated & Expanded 2025 Edition of TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT

The book with a 4.4 star review on Amazon just got even better - welcome to the updated and expanded 2025 edition of TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT: AN ORDINARY GUY'S LIFETIME OF LIVE ROCK & ROLL!

This new addition adds over 250 pages of brand new content including:
  • replacing the discarded song essay, with a new one about the relationship between rock & roll and Broadway, a unique pairing that only really came into focus for me in the last year or so.
  • adding numerous new charts/tables to the statistics section
  • quadrupling the number of setlists from shows I attended.
  • re-editing the entire book to clean up some areas that either seemed cumbersome or didn’t flow well
  • reformatting the entire book to give it a more professional look and feel.
Countless "truth is stranger than fiction" tales, 177 magical concerts, 100 unique bands, 50 years of finding a way to the next show, and 10 Rules Of The Road all add up to 1 ordinary guy's extraordinary love letter to live rock & roll.

It's bigger! It's  better! It's the perfect holiday gift for the rock and roll fan in your life!  And the paperback is still only $14.99!

1990s - #3: As the decade of the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. The Allmans reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg's tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Greg Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard recording captures the band in Richmond on Novembe 17, 1991, 34 years ago today.

2020s -#4: In early November 2023, music lovers in the town of Ridgefield, CT had a mystey on their hands.  The Ridgefield Playhouse had posted on line that on November 10, they would post details about a special, member only concert taht would take place just 5 days later.  All the venue would say leading up to the announcemnet was that the ticket price would be a bit higher norma. and that they would limit the number of tickets to four per member. Little wonder the theater tried to keep the event as secret as possible - turned out that their 500 seat venue woulkd be hosting the Tedeschi Trucks Band, who just a few weeks earlier had sold out all 20,000 seats at Madison Square Garden!  This excellent audience recording captures that intimate performance, on November 15, 2023, just 2 years ago today.

2020s - #3: In the Spring of 2022, Sir Paul McCartney brought his Got Back tour to the United States, his first series of live concerts since the COVID pandemic. The tour's title was both a play on words on the tune Get Back, and a declaration that he had returned, ready to continue to dazzle audiences around the world with his live performances. Then, in fall 2023, Sir Paul took the Got Back tour to Australia and South America. This soundboard recording captures McCartney in Mexcico onNoevmber 14, 2023, just 2 years ago today. By the way, the highlight of every show of the Got Back tour was I Got A Feeling, where using clips from the recent Get Back TV special and an isolated vocal track from the 1969 Rooftop show, Sir Paul did a a virtual duet with John Lennon.
