Dickey Betts was elected to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1995 as a member of the Allman Brothers Band. Betts entered alonside fellow bandmates Duane Allman, Gregg Allman, Berry Oakley, Butch Trucks, and Jaimoe Johanson Other entrants that year included Neil Young, Janis Joplin Frank Zappa, and the mighty Led Zeppelin.
This FM broadcast from the legendary Bottom Line in New York City captures Betts 18 years prior to his induction, and 49 years ago today, on April 19, 1977. The Allmans had temporarily split up in late 1976 over Gregg Allman's testimony against the band's security guard Scooter Herring. The rest of the band considered Gregg a "snitch" and refused to talk to him for almost 2 years. In the interim, Dickey Betts formed the band Great Southern, and eventually released an album with them in October 1977. The Bottom Line performance featured numerous tracks from that upcoming disc, including Run Gypsy Run, Bougainvillea, Nothing You Can Do, and The Way Love Goes, as well as several Allman Brothers Band classics.
