The Band - 1984-04-30 - Washington, DC (SBD)

The Band entered the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame in 1994, along with the Grateful Dead, The Animals, Bob Marley, Elton John, and John Lennon, just to name a few other members of that class. Ironically, Robbie Robertson, who chose not to join the reformed group in 1983, was in attendance, while Levon Helm, who led that reunion, skipped the ceremony due to his issue with Robertson. The members in attendance performed The Weight, backed by Eric Clapton who had made their induction speech.

This soundboard recording captures The Band after they had reformed, sans Robertson, in Washington, DC on April 30, 1984, 42 years ago today.

Fats Domino was a a member of the inaugural class voted in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, alongside such legends as Elvis Presley, Check Berry, Buddy Holly, James Brown, Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, The Everly Brothers, Little Richard and Jerry Lee Lewis. He had 11 top 10 singles in the 1950s/60s including Ain't That A Shame (#10), I'm In Love Again (#3), Blueberry Hill (#2), I'm Walkin (#4), Blue Monday (#5), Valley Of Tears (#8), It's You I Love (#6), Whole Lotta Loving (#6), I Want to Walk You Home (#8), Be My Guest (#8) and Walking to New Orleans (#6). He also influenced osome of the biggest names in rock, including Elvis, John Lennon, and Paul McCartney. 

This soundboard recording captures fats on his home turf in New Orleans on April 30, 1987, 29 years ago today, playing a provate event of the Hilton.

The 1988 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame class included arguably the greatest British and American rock performers of all time, The Beatles and Bob Dylan. The former Mr. Robert Zimmerman was inducted by Bruce Springsteen, one of the countless rock stars who at one point in their carrer was labeled the "next Bob Dylan".  Dylan played All Along The Watchtower and Like A Rolling Stone at the ceremony supported by Harrison on the first and Springsteen on the second. 

This soundboard recording captures Dylan during the legendary Rolling Thunder Revue tour in Mobile on April 29, 1976, 5 decades ago today. Supporting Dylan as part of the Revue were future Hall Of Famers Joan Baez, Willie Nelson, and Roger McGuinn.

Jimmy Buffett - 2007-04-28 - Frisco, TX (SBD) 

Jimmy Buffett was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as part of the Class of 2024, which also included Cher, Dave Matthews, Peter Frampton, Ozzy Osbourne, and Mary J. Blige, just to name a few. Buffett was inducted for "Musical Excellence", another nebulous category which no one can really define. Afterall aren't all the folks inducted as performers excellent? If not, why the hell are they in the Hall of Fame?

In any event this soundboard recording captures Jimmy in Frisco on April 28, 2007, 19 years ago today, on tour in support of the album Take The Weather With You, which had been released on October 10, 2006. The album went to #1 on Billboard's country charts, while also reaching #4 on the Billboard 200. In an interesting twist, 10 of the 14 songs on the album were covers. Of the 4 tunes Jimmy wrote or co-wrote, two, Breathe In, Breathe Out, Move On and Bahama Breeze, were written about Hurricane Katrina and its impact on the Gulf Coast.

Roger McGuinn - 1988-04-27 - Roanoke, VA (SBD)

Roger McGuinn entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1991 as a member of The Byrds.  At the induction ceremony at the Waldorf Astoria, the 5 original membrs of The Byrds - McGuinn, Gene Clark, David Crosby, Michael Clarke and Chris Hillman – put aside years of personal and financial disputes to reunite and perform. Sadly, it would be the last time the 5 original line up ever played together as both Michael Clarke and Gene Clark would pass away within the next 2 years. Of course, while those induction ceremonies closed some wounds, it opened others, as long time Byrds members such as Clarence White, Gene Parsons and Skip Battin, just to name 3, were completely ignored by the Rock Hall of Fame.

David Bowie - 1983-04-27 - Dallas, TX (SBD)

David Bowie was part of the 1996 Rock Hall Of Fame class, which also included Gladys Knight and the Pips, Jefferson Airplane, Little Willie John, Pink Floyd, Pete Seeger, The Shirelles and The Velvet Underground. David Byrne of the Talking Heads presented Bowie for induction. Bowie, wasn’t in the building, however, as he was in Helsinki, Finland, touring in support of his album, Outside. Madonna accepted on his behalf, and Marianne Faithful performed Rebel Rebel.  Stevie Ray Vaughn was elected in 2015, along with his band Double Trouble. Other inductees that year included Lou Reed, Bill Withers, Joan Jett and Ringo Starr.

This post goes back 13 years earlier to Bowie's tour in support of the Let's Dance album, when he teamed up with Vaughn. While attending the 1982 Montreux Jazz Festival, Bowie was impressed by a then unknown blues guitarist by the name of Stevie Ray Vaughan. So much so, that Bowie invited Vaughan to play on his next album. That disc, entitled, Let’s Dance, would blend a dance format with blues guitar rock to create a distinctive and unique sound. The public loved it, as the album went to #4 on the US Billboard charts and climbed all the way to the top spot in the UK. The album yielded 3 top 15 singles in the US, Modern Love at #14, China Girl at #10 and the title track which reached #1. When Bowie went on tour in support of the album, however, SRV could not accompany him due to contractual issues. WCBS-FM 25th Anniversary Concert - 1997-04-26 - Radio City, NY, NY (FM)

In July 1972, WCBS-FM in New York abandoned its rock and roll format having lost the ratings war with WNEW-FM and WPLJ-FM, and became one of the first stations in the US to adopt an "oldies" format.  That change proved to be ratings magic, and WCBS became one of the highest rated stations in New York for the next quarter century. WCBS celebrated 25 years as an oldies station with a concert, at Radio City Music Hall on April 26, 1997, 29 years ago today, with a concert that featured 5 performers who would all be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame:

• Felix Cavaliere: Inducted just a few days after this concert as a member of The Rascals, who put aside years of differences to perform People Got To Be Free.  Other members of the class of 1997 included Buffalo Springfield, CSN, and Joni Mitchell.
• Ronnie Spector: Inducted in 2007 as a member of the Ronettes.  Other artists inducted that year included R.E.M, Patti Smith and Van Halen.
• Little Anthony & The Imperials: Inducted in 2009, alongside Jeff Beck, Metallica, and Run DMC, just to name a few.
• Dion Dimucci: Inducted in 1989, along with the Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Otis Redding, and The Temptations.
• Frankie Valli: Inducted in 1990 as a member of the Four Seasons, along with The Who, Bobby Darin, The Four Tops, The Kinks, The Platters, Simon & Garfunkel, and Louis Armstrong, just to name a few. For the ceremony, the original lineup of the Four Seasons reunited for the first time since the mid-1960s and sang together for what would be the last time.  

The whole show, of course, was broadcast live on WCBS-FM! By the way, with the exception of a 2 years stint from 2005 to 2007 where the station featured the ill fated JACK-FM concept, the station has stayed true to its oldies format (though the songs now are more 1970s,1980s and 1990s than 1950s and 1960s) and continues to be one of the most listened to stations in the New York area.

Joe Cocker - 1970-04-26 - San Francisco, CA (FM)

Joe Cocker finally entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025, alongside Warren Zevon, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, and Cyndi Lauper, just to name a few members of the class. Perhaps Cocker's induction was helped by Sir Paul McCartney, who penned a note to the Hall on his behalf.

This FM broadcast captures Cocker in San Francisco on April 26, 1970, 56 years ago today, on tour in support of his first 2 albums.  About a year earlier,  in April 1969, he had released his first album, With A Little Help From My Friends. The title track, of course, was a classic Beatles tune, and Cocker’s unique version met with the approval of the Fab Four. The album went gold and climbed to #35 on the Billboard charts. Then in August, he appeared at Woodstock, playing a 13 song set on Sunday afternoon, August 17. In November, he released his 2nd album, which included 2 more Beatles covers, Something and She Came In Through The Bathroom Window, as well as the classic tune, Delta Lady.

Warren Zevon - 1978-04-24 - Los Angeles CA (FM)

Warren Zevon was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2025, alongside Joe Cocker, Bad Company, Chubby Checker, and Cyndi Lauper, just to name a few other members of the class. Zevon was inducted for "Musical Influence", a category the hall defines as including "artists whose music and performance style have directly influenced, inspired, and evolved rock & roll and music impacting culture". As if every artist inducted as a performers hasn't done all those things. I think it really should be defined as "we've screwed up for countless years in not inducting you, so we created this category to get you in the door."

In any event, this FM broadcast captures Zevon at the Roxy in Los Angeels on April 24, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today. His album Excitable Boy,  which had been produced by Jackson Browne and guitarist Waddy Wachtel, had been released just 4 months earlier. The disc met with both critical and commercial success. Rolling Stone called the album one of the most significant releases of the 1970s. The disc went to #8 on the Billboard charts, and spawned the classic single Werewolves of London, which reached #21 on the singles chart. Interestingly, on that same day, the Grateful Dead were playing a concert in Normal IL, which has been officially released as Dave’s Picks 37. They too had taken notice of Zevon, as their choice for an encore that night was none other than Werevolves of London.

Bob Marley - 1976-04-23 - Upper Darby PA (SBD)

Bob Marley was also part of the 1994 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Class, along with the Grateful Dead, The Band, The Animals, John Lennon, and Elton John, just to name a few.  He holds the distinction of being the first reggae artist inducted into the institution. No one in attendance at the ceremony will ever forget Bono's tribute to Marley - "Showman, shaman, human, Jamaican!"

Grateful Dead - 1979-04-22 - San Jose, CA (SBD) 

As mentioned in earlier posts this month, the Grateful Dead were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. While Jerry Garcia did not show up for the ceremony, the rest of the band did, and brought a life size cardboard cut out of him! In the true spirit of the 1960s flower power era, the band attempted to be incredibly inclusive, listing 12 members as part of the band for induction. In addition to the then current line up of Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Vince Welnick, Mickey Hary and Bill Kruetzmann, the Dead also included former keyboard players Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, Brent Mydland, Keith Godchaux, and Tom Constanten, not to mention vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux. They even included lyricist Robert Hunter, who in collaboration with Garcia, had written some of the band's most famous tunes, including Uncle John's Band, US Blues, St Stephen, Eyes Of The World, Ripple, and Touch Of Grey, just to name a few. That said, I still think they missed 2 other members of the Dead family who should have been inducted. First is Bruce Hornsby, who played keyboards for them for almost 2 years alongside Welnick, about the same length of service as Constanten. Hornsby obviously was not offended, as he inducted the band. Second was John Perry Barlow, who worked with Weir in the same way Hunter partnered with Garcia. Weir/Barlow tunes, while not as numerous or famous as Garcia/Hunter compositions, included such staples of the Dead's live performances as Estimated Prophet, Cassidy, Looks Like Rain, Throwing Stones, and The Music Never Stopped, just to cite a few.

In any event, this soundboard recording captures theband on April 22, 1979, 47 years ago today, in San Jose. It was the first show for keyboardist Brent Mydland as a member of the Dead. He would become the Dead's longest tenured keyboard player, performing with the band for over 12 years, until his tragic death in July 1990 from a drug over dose at the age of 37.

Shery Crow was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of fame in 2023, alongside Willie Nelson, Rage Against The Machine, Missy Elliot, and Bernie Taupin, just to name a few other members of that class.  Sheryl Crow was all over the ceremony, playing 3 of her tunes, with guest appearances by Olivia Rodrigo, Stevie Nicks and Peter Frampton, joining Willie Nelson for Crazy, and taking a verse of The Weight during the tribute to Robbie Robertson. 

This soundboard recording goes back to April 21, 1999, 27 years ago today to captures Sheryl in Madison on tour in support of her 3rd album, The Globe Sessions, which had been released in September 1998. The critically acclaimed disc climbed to #5 on the charts and won 2 Grammy Awards.
