1988: In August 1988, John Hiatt released the album Slow Turning, his follow up to his 1987 breakout album, Bring The Family. Hiatt is backed on the album by the Goners: Sonny Landreth on guitar, Dave Ranson on bass and Kenneth Blevins on drums. The album contains some of Hiatt’s best know tunes, including Drive South, Tennessee Plates, Feels Like Rain and the title track. The single Slow Turning received significant airplay and has several notable lines. The chorus of “not fade way’ echoes the Buddy Holly song of the same name, while the line “never did get what I wanted but now I get what I need” is reminiscent of a line from the Stone’s You Can’t Always get What You Want. Speaking of the Stones, Slow Turning also features the lyric “I'm yelling at the kids in the back, 'cause they're banging like Charlie Watts”. I’ve said it in other posts but it’s worth repeating here – John Hiatt is a vastly under rated singer/songwriter. This FM broadcast captures Hiatt in Canada on September 30, 1988, 38 years ago today, on tour in support of Slow Turning.

1981: After a short 5 show run in Europe in March 1981, done as favor to Pete Townshend of The Who, the Grateful Dead returned to Europe in fall of that year for 13 shows in 7 countries between September 30 and October 19. The set lists showcased songs from their latest album, Go To Heaven, including Althea, Alabama Get Away, Far From Me, Feel Like a Stranger, Lost Sailor and Saint Of Circumstance. Generally, the band's playing is strong throughout the run, though some signs of the trouble that would plague the band in the mid 1980s are evident. Most noticeably, Jerry Garcia takes less of a leadership role in driving the band musically, hanging back at times and even having difficulty with some of the faster solos. Garcia's heroin use had begun to impact his personality and musical skills, and his band mates were growing weary of it. In fact, on the last night, in Barcelona, they presented Jerry with a letter, penned by Phil, but signed by everyone in the band, expressing their dissatisfaction. The letter opened with “Dear Sir and Brother. You have been accused of certain high crimes and misdemeanors against the art of music. To wit: playing in your own band; never playing with any dynamics; never listening to what anyone else plays…” For band that tended to avoid any sort of confrontation, this was quite a large step, though it did not seem to have any lasting impact. In any event, today we go back to the opening night of that tour, with this soundboard recording from Scotland from September 30, 1981, 45 years ago today.

1988:  After splitting with The Rumour in 1980, Graham Parker’s solo career during the rest of that decade was a series of ups and downs. His 1982 disc Another Grey Area, charted well in both the US and UK. In 1985, he scored his only top 40 hit in the US with the tune Wake Up (Next to You). Yet, despite these commercial successes, Parker could not manage to stay with a record label. He moved from Arista to Electra to Atlantic between 1982 and 1987. He bottomed out during that stint with Atlantic, as the label dropped him without releasing a single album or song! In 1988, he signed with RCA and took control of producing his own records, with help from guitarist Brinsley Schwarz. He released the album The Mona Lisa's Sister in the spring of 1988, which was hailed as a comeback by several critics. The album spent 19 weeks on the Billboard charts and generated a college radio hit with Get Started (Start a Fire). The disc had a sparser, back to basics sound, similar to a trend that would emerge in rock in the 1990s. This FM broadcast captures Parker in Rochester on September 28, 1988, 338 years ago today, on tour in support of The Mona Lisa's Sister. Download this one to hear Parker’s comeback as he provides a glimpse into the “roots rock” movement that would highlight the early parts of the next decade.

1992: In August 1991, the Spin Doctors released their debut album Pocket Full Of Kryptonite, but it barely received any commercial or critical notice. It took almost a year before folks picked up on the album, bolstered by MTv playing videos of Two Princes and Little Miss Can't be Wrong. Sales suddenly took off, with the album certifying gold by September 1992, and reaching triple platinum status by June 1993. The disc peaked at #3 on the Billboard charts, and the 2 singles mentioned previously both cracked the top 20. By the way, the album got its title from a line from its opening track, Jimmy Olsen's Blues, which didn't chart when originally released, but eventually cracked the Billboard Top 100 after the band's big commercial breakthrough. This soundboard recording captures the band in New York, about a year before the release of  Pocket Full Of Kryptonite, on September 27, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.

The category 5 storm was one of the most destructive and costly storms in US history. Weeks later, singer Gloria Estefan, a south Florida, native, organized a benefit concert to raise funds to help those imopacted by Hurricane Andrew. The star studded event, where all the artists performed for free, lasted 7 hours and raised over $4 million.  This soundboard recording captures sets from CSN and Paul Simon from that show, on September 26, 1992, 32 years ago today.

Shows I'm Looking For - The Big List (Updated September 25, 2026)

I've again updated my list of requests as of September 25, 2026.

I've eliminated all the ones I've found thanks to good friends of this blog to make the list cleaner and easier to read. You can also find this list on the My Requests page.

I'm looking for all these shows in either SBD or FM quality. If any of you have any of these shows, please zip them up, upload them to a host like kraken, workupload, pixeldrain, filefactory, etc, and post the download link in the comments. It will be greatly appreciated.

And please know, whether or not I find any of these, more great shows will continue to come your way every day!

Note: any format is fine - FLAC, mp3, etc. If the show is split into tracks as opposed to being one big file, that would be appreciated. Thanks again for any help!

Note: crossed out means someone has fulfilled the request

As mentioned in numerous posts here at So Many Roads, the Grateful Dead’s concerts from summer 1989 through fall 1991 were a highpoint in the band’s career. That period includes numerous shows that the Dead have officially released including
  • a show from Philadelphia from July 7, 1989
  • the Giant Stadium Shows from July 9 and 10, 1989
  • The 2 night stand at RFK Stadium from July 12 and 13, 1989
  • the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989
  • the Meadowlands NJ concert on October 16, 1989
  • the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990
  • the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990;
  • 2 (yes 2) box sets from Spring 1990, featuring every show from that tour - the only other tour to be released in its entirety besides Europe 1972
  • a show from from Mountain View CA from June 16, 1990
  • a show from from Pittsburgh from July 8, 1990
  • the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990.
  • a show from Paris from October 27, 1990
  • a show from Washington DC from June, 14, 1991
  • the Giants Stadium shows from June 16 and 17, 1991
  • a show from Pine Knob from June 20, 1991
  • a show from Madison Square Garden from September 10, 1991, featuring Bradford Marsalis
  • a show from Boston Garden on September 25 and 26, 1991
The Dead ended this wonderful 2 1/2 year in the fall of 1991 with 9 shows at Madison Square Garden, 6 at the Boston Garden and 5 in the San Francisco/Oakland area. This soundboard recording captures the Dead in September 24, 1991, 35 years ago today. Some folks say this show is even better than the next two nights,  which as mentioned above, were both officially released. By the way, maybe the Dead also sensed something was coming to an end at this concert as it was the last time the band ever played And We Bid You Goodnight.

1998: Robert Plant and Jimmy Page spent over a decade together as part of one of rock’s greatest bands, the mighty Led Zeppelin, before the band's demise in 1980 after the death of drummer John Bonham. In the mid 1990s, almost 15 years after Led Zep dissolved, Plant and Page reunited for an MTv Unplugged special, which received rave reviews. As a result, the duo not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, but also agreed to tour in 1995. After that tour, the two went back into the studio and recorded another album, entitled Walking Into Clarksdale. The title referred to a town in the Mississippi Delta, a home of Delta blues music that influenced the duo. Released in April 1998, the album went to #8 on the Billboard charts in the US, and climbed all the way to #3 in the UK. Plant and Page went back on tour in support of Walking Into Clarksdale, touring Europe and North America. This soundboard recording captures the duo durng that tour, on September 23, 1998, 28 years ago today, in Las Vegas.

1983: When MTV launched on August 1, 1981, many of the earliest music videos the station aired were from emerging new wave artists such as Blondie, Elvis Costello, and The Pretenders, just to name a few. That said, at some point, it seemed that almost any MTV video from a new band became classified as new wave, whether or not the artist truly fit that genre. Such was the case with Greg Kihn, whose video for the Breakup Song - simply a clip of the tune being played live - was among the first aired by MTV. As a result of that video being played alongside ones by the artists mentioned earlier, Kihn sometimes was referred to as a new wave act, even though he was really a straight ahead rock and roller. Kihn later received even more attention on MTV for his video for the song Jeopardy. It was one of the first “concept” videos aired on MTV, and was later spoofed by Weird Al Yankovic in the video I Lost on Jeopardy. New Wave or not, Kihn’s video singles did well on the charts, with The Breakup Song reaching #15 and Jeopardy climbing all the way to the #2 position. This FM broadcast catches Kihn on September 23, 1983, 43 years ago today, in San Francisco. Download this one, and while you listen, you just might want your MTV!

1984: In 1982, the Allman Brothers broke up, unable to operate as band anymore due to tensions, alcohol and drugs. Dickie Betts explained that "we broke up in '82 because we decided we better just back out or we would ruin what was left of the band’s image." For most of the next 5 years, Greg Allman wandered around in a drunken haze, unable or unwilling to make new music. He later explained that “No two ways about it, the ’80s were rough. [...] It was seven years of going, "What is it that I do?” Being self-employed your whole life, that becomes a certain rock, a reinforcement. When that’s gone, not only are you bored stiff, but you just want to cry—"What do I do? I know I used to serve a purpose."  To break up the boredom and dispair, Allman occaisionally hit the road to play solo shows. This soundboard recording captures him in San Francisco on September 22, 1984, 42 years ago today.

TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT: UPDATED & EXPANDED EDITION

NOTE: For those of you who have been long time followers of So Many Roads, you know I do this all for the love of music and never ask for donations or contributions.  That said, if you ever want to help this blog in some way, please buy my book.  I don't make much  - a dollar or two depending on whether you buy the paperback, Kinde or harcover version - but the profits all go to buying more storage so I can keep collecting shows and sharing them here.  And, based on all the positive reviews, I think you'll enjoy my tale! Thanks for all your support! And my deepest appreciation to anyone who has already purchased the book!

Countless "truth is stranger than fiction" tales, 177 magical concerts, 100 unique bands, 50 years of finding a way to the next show, and 10 Rules Of The Road all add up to 1 ordinary guy's extraordinary love letter to live rock & roll.

And now, the book with a 4.4 star review on Amazon just got even better - welcome to the updated and expanded 2025 edition of TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT: AN ORDINARY GUY'S LIFETIME OF LIVE ROCK & ROLL!

The new edition is 550 pages, with over 250 pages of brand new content including:
  • updates elements to every section of the book – the rules, the essays, the concert summaries, and the statistics.
  • more tales from my 20th century concert adventures that I dredged out of my memory that didn't make the first edition
  • details of all the shows I’ve attended since 2021, after the first edition was published, until today
  • complete re-writes of Rules #2, #5, #6, #7, # 8 and #10, as well as the Grateful Dead essay, have been almost completely re-written.
  • consolidating the Song Selection essays from three to two but adding more songs to each remaining chapter in the process, doubling the number of tunes covered from 40 to 80.
  • replacing the discarded song essay, with a new one about the relationship between rock & roll and Broadway, a unique pairing that only really came into focus for me in the last year or so.
  • adding numerous new charts/tables to the statistics section
  • quadrupling the number of setlists from shows I attended.
  • re-editing the entire book to clean up some areas that either seemed cumbersome or didn’t flow well
  • reformatting the entire book to give it a more professional look and feel.
It's bigger! It's  better! It's the perfect summer read for the rock & roll fan in your life!  And the paperback is still only $14.99!  Also available in Kindle and now Hardcover as well!

1982: When Rockpile unexpectedly disbanded in 1981, Dave Edmunds made wholesale changes in his musical life. He switched record labels, moving from Swan Song to Arista. He put together a new band, which included guitarist Mickey Gee, bassist John David, pianist Geraint Watkins, and drummer Dave Charles. That group would record and tour with Edmunds throughout the rest of the 1980s. Amidst all that change, one thing stayed the same -- Edmunds' ability to play good old straight ahead rock and roll. This FM broadcast captures Edmunds and his new band in New York on September 21, 1982, 44 years ago today.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Enjoy the tunz.

1997: In 1996, VH1 launched Storytellers, a program in which artists performed in front of a small audience, and recounted stories about their music, writing experiences and memories. The show had its hey day between its debut and 2002, when 67 of its 98 episodes aired. This soundboard recording captures Elton John's appearance on Storytellers, from New Orleans on September 19, 1997, 29 years ago today. Elton was promoting his just about to be released album, The Big Picture, his 26th studio disc at that point in his career. The album was dedicated to Elton John’s friend, popular fashion designer Gianni Versace, who was murdered a few months before the album's release. The album did well commercially, reaching #9 in the US on the Billboard charts and climbing all the way to #3 in the UK. Despite that success, Elton’s long time friend and lyricist Bernie Taupin, considered this disc his least favorite of all their collaborations. Note: This is another test of Buzzheavier  - see our September 15 post for more details. NOTE 2 - originally an issue with the link - fixed as of  9 am Eastern, September 19.

1997: In 1981, Men At Work, a then unknown band from Australia led by quirky singer Colin Hay, burst onto the music scence with two singels that both reached #1 on the Billboard charts in the US, Who Can It be Now and Down Under. Videos for the two songs also received extensive airplay on the then fledling music video channel, MTv.  The success of the singles drove the band's debut album, Business As Usual, to the top spot on the charts in the US, where it spent 15 weeks.  The band never quite acheived the same success again, Their follow up album, Cargo, released in 1983, went to #3 on the charts, with 2 singles reaching the top 10, Overkill at #3 and It's A Mistake at #6.  Their 3rd disc, Two Hearts, released in 1985 only reached #50 on the charts and failed to produce a top 10 single.  By 1986, the band was defunct with Hay pursuing a solo career.  Some 10 years later, Hay reformed the band, in large part due to demand for a reunion from a staunch fan base in South America.  The toured that continent in late 1996, then returned again in 1997. This TV soundbaord recording captures Men At Work in Rio on September 18, 1997, 29 years ago today. Note: The video is dated October 29, 1997 which the broadcast date, not the actual concert date.  Note 2: This is another test of Buzzheavier  - see our September 15 post for more details. note 3: New link is up as of 7:30 am Eastern on September 19

1981: The televison business is notorious for being a copycat industry. The minute one network has a success, every other one seeks to imitate it. ABC's show Friday's was there unsuccsssful attempt to duplicate what NBC has done with Saturday Night Live. Launched in 1980, Friday's lasted just 2 years (SNL is still running, over 50 years after its launch in 1975!) but it did feature some excellent new wave and punk artists as musical guests. This TV soundboard recording captures The Pretenders on Fridays on September 18, 1981, 45 years ago today. They were promoting their 2nd album, appropriately titled Pretenders II. The disc went to #10 on the Billboard charts and featured such tunes as Message Of Love, Talk Of The Town and The Adulteress. It would be the last album recorded by the original Pretenders line up, as drug overdoses claimed the lives guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon over the next 2 years.

1993: Someone must have had a premonition when they asked a then relatively unknown band to fill in for Van Morrison, who skipped his own induction, at the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame ceremony on January 16, 1993. Later that year, the band released the album August & Everything After, which went to #4 on the Billboard charts in the strength of such songs as Mr. Jones, Round Here and Rain King. The Counting Crows had arrived. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in in support of their stunning debut disc, in San Francisco, on September 17, 1993, 33 years ago today. 1987: In August 1986, Crowded House released their self titled debut album, which garnered only limited attention initially. In December 1986, however, the 4th single from the album, Don't Dream It's Over, became a huge hit, climbing to #2 on the Billboard charts and carrying the album up to #12. The follow up single, Something So Strong, also became a top 10 hit in the US, reaching #7 on the Billboard charts. This soundboard recording captures the band on tour in support of that first album, in Mansfield, on September 17, 1987, 39 years ago today.
