Hornsby 2011 - Back To Back - #1: In early 2011, Bruce Hornsby ventured into the world of musicals, wrting the msuic and lyrics for a play entitled SCKBSTD, which told the tale what happens to a family when a mysterious stranger arrives in a small town bringing fear and paranoia in his wake. Later in the spring, he released the live album, Bride Of The Noisemakers.  That summer, he was back on the road, playing concerts that featured tunes from both the play and the live disc.  This soundboard recording captures him, backed by the Npisemakers, in Woodinville, on July 30, 2011, 15 years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

Sheryl 1999 - Back To Back - #1: The summer of 1999 was a busy time for Sheryl Crow, to say the least. She was on the road as part of the Lilith Fair, an all female tour organized by Sarah McLachlan, which also featured such artists as The Pretenders, Indigo Girls, Liz Phair, Suzanne Vega, and Dixie Chicks, just to name a few.  She was also promoting her 1998 critically acclaimed album, The Globe Sessions, which went to #5 on the Billboard charts and won 2 Grammy Awards. Sheryl used a night off from the Lilith Fair to record an episode of Sessions At West 54th Street on July 29, 1999, 27 years ago today, as captured in this TV soundboard recording. Sheryl used the episode to feature both her album and the tour, playing a set very similar to what she was doing on satge at the Lilith Fair.  Downalod this one, them come back tomorrow for part 2 of thsi Back To Back set.

August's Theme At So Many Roads

Fifty years ago - yes a half century - on August 15, 1976, I saw my very first concert.  That expereinced propelled me to over 175 more, and even inspired my book, Ten Rules Of The Road I Learened At My First Concert, which is now on its second edition.

In honor of that first show, our theme for August 2026 will be again be Bands I Saw Live, but we'll have a few twists from what we did in June.  First, we'll make sure every show we post, in addition to being frm an artists I saw in concert, will be from the years 1976 to 2025, the fifty year period I've been going to concerts. Second, we'll have 50 shows since its been 50 years since I've been attending concerts. Third, and finally, we'll post several shows I actually attended, including that very first Elton John concert!

Enjoy the tunz!

Hiatt 1990 - Back To Back - #1:As mentioned in other posts on this blog, I think John Hiatt is one of rock’s most under rated and overlooked talents. His run of albums between 1987 and 1995 - Bring The Family, Slow Turning, Stolen Moments, Perfectly Good Guitar and Walk On - are filled with exceptional tunes. Many of those songs have been covered by artists such as Bob Dylan, Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet and Joe Cocker. Unfortunately, Hiatt never achieved the commercial success he deserved.  This sounsboard recording captures him on tour in support of Stolent Moments, during the late show at the Bottom Line on July 26, 1990, 3 dozen years ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

Other Ones 1998 - Back To Back - #1: After Jerry Garcia's passing in August 1995, the band officially retired the name the Grateful Dead, announcing "that the long strange trip of the uniquely wonderful beast known as the Grateful Dead is over. Although individually and in various combinations they will undoubtedly continue to make music, whatever the future holds will be something different in name and structure." For the next 2 years, the band members pursued individual endeavor, though, they worked collectively to sponsor The Furthur Festival, a summer tour that featured a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby. Then, in 1998, they decided, in the words of the Blues Brothers, to put the band back together. The 1998 version of the Furthur Festival saw Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh & Mickey Hart reunited to form The Other Ones, which was lifted from the title of the Grateful Dead tune That's It For The Other One. The name was appropriate it reflected that the new band was something different from, yet related to, the Dead. The 1998 version of the Other Ones also included Bruce Hornsby, John Molo, Steve Kimock, Mark Karan and Dave Ellis. This soundboard recording captures the Other Ones in Mountain View on July 24, 1998, 28 years ago today, Download this one, the stop back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.

JS 1983 - Back To Back - #1: After John Sebastian left the Lovin Spoonful in 1968, he embarked on a solo career that never quite acheived the same level of critical or commercial success. The one major exception was his 1976 number 1 single, Welcome Back, which served as the theme song to the televison comedy Welcome Back, Kotter, starring Gabel Kaplan in the title role.  This soundboard recording captures Sebastian some 7 years later, during the early show at Roickefeller's in Houston, playing tht tune along with plenty of ongs from his Lovin' Spoonful days. Old & In The Way 1973 - Back To Back - #1: In early 1973, Jerry Garcia plunged into a new side-project, a bluegrass group called Old and in the Way, The band featured Garcia on banjo and vocals, John Kahn on string bass, David Grisman on mandolin and vocals, and guitarist/singer Peter Rowan. Fiddler Richard Greene joined in April of 1973, but juggling his own band in LA, dropped out after a couple of months and was replaced first by John Hartford, and eventually by the legendary Vassar Clements. The band broke up due to fighting between Rowan and Grisman, but plans were in place for a comeback before Jerry’s tragic death in 1995. Old & In The Way would play 47 shows between January 1973 and April 1974. This soundboard recording captures them in San Francisco on July 23 1973, 53 years ago today.

GD 1984 - Back To Back - #1: The year 1984 was a difficult time for the Grateful Dead as Jerry Garcia’s health was beginning to fail due to his addiction to heroin. Video of Jerry often shows him slumped over his guitar, his hair messy and unkempt. Yet amidst these issues, the band still found those moments of magic that set them apart from any other live act. For example, several years ago, we brought you the July 13 show from Berkeley, where a shooting star inspired a Dark Star encore, the only time that song was played between 1981 and 1989! This soundboard recording captures the band just a few days later, in Ventura on July 21, 1984, 42 years ago today, and some of the magic from Berkeley seems to have carried over!  The set list includes a surprising China Cat > I Know You Rider in the first set, while the 2nd set features Truckin' seguing into Eyes Of The World.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for part 2 of this Back To Back set.

U2 2009 - Back To Back - #1: On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales This IEM recording captures the band during that tour in the Netherlands on July 20, 2009, 17 yeras ago today.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for the 2nd half of this Back To Back set.
