Bob Weir - 1991-08-31 - Pasadena, CA (SBD)

While I went to 50 Grateful Dead concerts, I only saw Bob Weir solo once, in July 1992, as mentioned in our Bruce Cockburn post earlier this month.  That show was at the Meadowlands Summer Fest, which turned out to be a stage and seats set up in the parking lot at Giants Stadium. Oh the things promoter John Scher did to run a concert and make a bucks - you'll find even more in my book.

This soundboard recording captures Weir about a year earlier, in Pasadena on August 31, 1991, 35 years ago today.  Weir was accompanied by Rob Wasserman.  The two started working together in the late 1980s as a duo, and then formed the core of Ratdog, which in 1995, played their first show on August 8, 1995, the night before Jerry Garcia passed away.

The Go Go's - 1981-08-31 - Cherry Hill, NJ (FM)

Believe it or not, I've seen the Go Gos on 3 occasions - in November 1981 at the Palladium in New York, in January 1982 leading in for the Police at Madison Square Garden, and then again in July 2000 on a bill with the B52s and Psychedelic Furs.

Of course the height of their success came in the early 1980s. In June 1981, The Go Go's released the single, We Got The Beat, and the accompanying video became a mainstay om the then fledgling MTV channel. A month later, the band released the album Beauty and The Beat, which steadily climbed the charts until it reached the top spot, where it remained for 6 weeks. The Go Go's had taken the music world by storm, and made history in the process. Beauty and The Beat became the first album entirely written and performed by an all-female band to top the charts. Today the disc is recognized as one of the cornerstones of the new wave movement. This FM broadcast captures them during those heady days on August 31, 1981, 45 years ago today,  at the Emerald City night club in Cherry Hill, NJ. The Police - 2007-08-30 - Stockholm, Sweden (Ex Aud) 

I saw The Police just once, in January 1982, at Madison Square Garden, but what a historic show it was. The Go Gos, who opened, had the #1 album on the Billboard charts at the time. The Police, who headlined, had the #2 album on those charts! New Wave had arrived, commanding the charts and selling out "The World's Most Famous Arena."

Today we skip ahead over 2 decades from that legenday show. On February 11, 2007, The Police reunited after being apart for almost 20 years for a performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles. As they took the stage for the Grammy’s, the trio proclaimed "Ladies and gentlemen, we are The Police, and we're back!” The next day, at a press conference at the Whisky a Go Go, they announced they would launch a world tour starting in Vancouver on May 28. The tour would last well over a year, with the final show played held on August 7, 2008 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The Police sold 3.7 million tickets and grossed $358 million during their reunion sojourn, making it the third-highest-grossing tour of all-time at its conclusion. This excellent audience recording captures The Police on August 30, 2007, 19 years ago today, in Stockholm near the beginning of their historic reunion tour.

Jorma Kaukonen - 2020-08-29 - Pomeroy, OH (Webcast)

I've only seen Jorma once, on July 14, 1979 in Asbury Park NJ. While my buddies and I we really enjoyed the acoustic set, we actually left halfway through the electric set, as the band seemed to be jamming endlessly, with little direction or purpose. That may have reflected the fact that Jorma himself was a bit directionless at the time, even experimenting with some punk music, which was far removed from his musical roots.  By the way that's just one of only two time I ever left a concert early.  The other was a Billy Joel show in February 2006, but that has nothing to do with the music.  In gact the show was fantastic, but the forecast that night was for 20 inches of snow and we had an hour ride home by car from Madison Square Garden. So we left before the encore, and just managed to make it home before the worst of the snow hit, though it did take a 1/2 hour to make the last 10 minutes of the drive!

This webcast recording captures Jorma at his ranch in Pomeroy, Ohio on August 29, 2020, 7 years ago today. Jorma, like many other artists, kept in touch with is fans during the COVID quarantine period in 2020-2021 by playing live shows and broadcasting them on the web.

Crosby, Stills & Nash - 1992-08-29 - Atlantic City, NJ (SBD)

Our last post this month of a concert where I was in attendance. On August 29, 1992, 34 years ago today, I went to see CSN at Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City, the 6th and final time I would see the trio. (I also saw CSN in 1978, 1985, 1986, 1987, and 1989, plus CSNY in 2000). At the time,  the idea of a rock band playing a casino still seemed a bit cheesy.  The thought was that artists played Vegas and AC when they were past their prime, when they had become parodies of their former selves, oldies acts playing to overweight, over served businessmen trying to relive their youth. I was pleasantly surprised, therefore,  to see that much of the audience were true fans of the band, much like myself.  CSN played a show worthy of any true rock venue, except for the moment when Graham Nash stormed off stage because the audience wouldn’t quiet down for a new song he attempted during the band’s acoustic set.  Fortunately, David Crosby jumped into the void created by his band mate’s temper tantrum and unleashed an incredible version of Almost Cut My Hair.  Download this soundboard recording of the show, and know that you won’t have to worry about losing your money in the slot machines after it’s over.

I saw Bruce Cockburn as the lead in band for Bob Weir in the summer of 1992. Cockburn also joined Weir during the encore of The Weight.  More on that show in our Weir post later this month.

Don Henley  - 1986-08-28 - Long Beach, CA (FM)

I saw Don Henley live once, in August 1985 at Pier 84 in New York, with Katrina & The Waves leading in. Henley was on tour in support of the album Building The Perfect Beast, which spawned the top 5 single, The Boys Of Summer. That video for that tune won 4 awards at the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards, including Video Of The Year.

This FM Broadcast captures Henley about a year after I saw him, in Long Beach on August 28, 1986, 4 decades ago this very day.  He was headling a benefit called Get Tough On Toxics, which almost turned into an Eagles reunion.  Glen Frey was also supposed to be on the bill, but had to cancel due to a serious illness. He did appear via video right before Best Of My Love.

The Band - 1994-08-26 -Asbury Park NJ (FM) 

I only saw The Band live just twice, both times in 1985. The first concert, in August at Pier 84 in New York, they were the lead in for CSN. The 2nd show, in October, they headlined at one of their favorite venues, the Lone Star Cafe. 

This post fast fowards 9 years after I saw them to 1994, which proved to be quite a magical year for The Band. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson continued to tour relentlessly, incorporating tunes from their 1993 album Jericho into their set list. Among the songs from that disc was a unique cover of Bruce Springsteen’s Atlantic City. They played at Woodstock 1994 in August, 25 years after they had played the original festival in 1969. They capped the year by being elected to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That 1994 class also included John Lennon, Elton John, Rod Stewart, Bob Marley, The Animals, Duane Eddy, and one of The Band’s long time touring partners, The Grateful Dead. Eric Clapton, who had long admired the group and cited them as one of the reasons he moved away from the style of music played by Cream, made the induction speech for The Band. They also helped legendary FM station WNEW-FM celebrate the station's 20th anniversary, as captured in this FM broadcast from the Stone Pony on August 26, 1994, 29 years ago today.

I've only seen Sheryl Crow once, on July 28, 2019 at the Rooftop at Pier 17 at the South Street Seaport in New York. The good news - our Chase Card got us early admission so we found a spot right in front of Sheryl's microphone (it was standing room only!), not more than 5 feet from her! The bad news - its the last concert I attended before the pandemic hit and kept us away from live music for over 2 years. That's what led to finally writing my book - since I couldn't attend live shows, figured I might as well write about them. 

This webcast recording captures Sheryl about a year before I saw her in concert, at the Lockin' Festival on August 26, 2018, 8 years ago today.

Joe Jackson - 1989-08-25 - Berkeley, CA (Ex Aud)

I've seen Joe Jackson on 3 occasions - in February 1981, in August 1980 and then in October 1982. When I saw him that final time he was in the midst of making the transition from angry punk rocker to an artist playing tunes influenced by Cole Porter, jazz and big band music.

Today's post brings us more of later day Mr. Jackson, on tour in support of his labum Blaze Of Glory.  This excellent audience recording captures him in Berkeley on August 25, 1989, 37 years ago today.

I've seen Robert Cray in concert twice, both times in 1987. The first time, in April, he led-in for Eric Clapton at Madison Square Garden. Then I saw Cray again in August 1987 at Pier 84 in New York. He was the headline act with John Hiatt as his lead in. It was a fitting pairing since just as Hiatt had his commercial breakthrough that year, so did Cray. His album Strong Persuader, released in late 1986, climbed into the top 15 on the Billboard charts in 1987. This FM broadcast captures Cray in West Virginia on August 23, 1999, 27 years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 1978-08-23 - Madison Square Garden, NY (Ex/ VG Aud)

On August 23, 1978, 4 dozen years ago today, as captured in this some times excellent, some times very good audience recording, I saw Bruce Springsteen for the first time, which was just the 11th concert I had ever attended up to that point. For Bruce, it was his first time headlining at Madison Square Garden. Springsteen had just recently released the album Darkness On The Edge Of Town, his first disc since 1975's Born to Run, the 3 year gap resulting from a long legal battle with his former manager. The songs on Darkness were leaner than his previous work, and began to reflect his growing social and political awareness. The tour was critical for Bruce, therefore, as he needed to gauge if his new material would resonate with fans and if his live shows would translate to 20,000 seat arenas. The August 23 show I attended was the last of his 3 nights at MSG, and to paraphrase the late, great, John Lennon, lets just say Bruce "passed the audition". Since that show, I've seen Springsteen  headline 8 more times - another concert in 1978, then in 1984, 1985, 1988, twice in 1992, and then twice more in 2003.  I also saw him as a guest of Sir Paul McCartney in both 2017 and 2022. That's 11 times I've seen him on stage across 6 decades!

I easily saw them a half dozen times at blues clubs in New York City in the late 1980s, but for a host of reasons, all explained in my book, I never quite was able to keep track of when and where.  In any event, for those of you unfamiliar with them, the New York Times described the band as playing “Timeless, deeply soulful and uplifting gospel-drenched blues, street corner doo-wop, ballads, R&B, country and funk." This soundboard recording captures the Holmes Brothers in California on August 22, 2001, a quarter century ago this very day.

Rolling Stones - 2019-08-22 - Pasadena, CA (IEM Matrix)

I've only seen the Stones once, in October 1989 at Shea Stadium, during their Steel Wheels tour, which is fine, since one near death expereince per life time is more than enough. You can read more about that show and why I'm thankful to be still be walking this earth in my book, TEN RULES OF THE ROAD I LEARNED AT MY FIRST CONCERT. 

In any event, this IEM Matrix recording captures the Rolling Stones in Pasadena on August 22, 219, 7 yeras ago today during their No Filter tour. The Stones had launched the tour on September 9, 2017 in Hamburg, the first of a 14 show run in Europe. A second European leg of the tour was launched in May 2018. The Stones then announced a North American leg of the tour which was originally scheduled to begin in April 2019. When Mick Jagger required a heart valve replacement, those dates were all postponed by about 2 months.

In the early 1980s, punk and new wave music started to move more into the mainstream, as evidenced locally by the fact that classic rock station WNEW-FM began to play those genres.  As a result I found myself listening to and enjoying a host of new artists, which in turn led me to buy tickets to concerts by those bands.  Between 1980 and 1983, I attended shows by The Clash, The Pretenders, Joan Jett, Joe Jackson, The Police, The Go Gos, Pat Benatar, Robin Lane, and The Ramones, just to name a few.  I also got to see a local band, from nearby Hoboken NJ, called the Bongos, on December 31, 1982 at the Mudd Club in New York. The Bongos had released an album entitled Drums Along The Hudson, which featured a host of tunes, such as Bulrushes, Zebra Club and In The Congo, that blended guitar driven pop with dance rhythms. It became anther one of those discs that went on my turntable and never came off.  

While I'm fairly certain no tape exists of the New Year's Eve show I attended (no one could have been sober enough to make a recording!!), I did find this FM broadcast from Columbia University, from about 6 months later, on August 21, 1983, 43 years ago today. Only wish this one had Zebra Club on it!

I've only seen Sting solo once, on February 15,1991. The tickets were a Valentine's Day gift for my then girlfriend of just under a year. Two weeks later I asked her to marry me, she said yes and its been the best years of my life! Every good book, even my tale of rock & roll, needs a good love story! 

Two years later, on March 9th, 1993, Sting released Ten Summoner’s Tales, his 4th solo album since the breakup of the Police in 1987. The album title is a pun on his real surname (Sumner). The album went to #2 on both the US and British charts, while achieving triple platinum status in less than a year. Ten Summoner’s Tales, would be nominated for 6 Grammys, and win 3, including best Pop Vocal performance for If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, the first single from the album. That tune would reach #17 on the Billboard charts in the US, while another song from the album, Fields of Gold, would climb to #23. Sting launched a world tour in support of the album, which would take him to all 6 inhabited continents. This FM broadcast captures Sting in Germany on August 21, 1993, 33 years ago today, during the early stages of that tour. Download this one to hear Gordon Sumner play tunes from the disc that bears his name, as well as a host of classics from his days with The Police.

Pat Benatar - 2013-08-20 - Vienna, VA (ALD)

I saw Pat Benatar twice in the early 1980s, once on November 22, 1980 at the Palladium in New York and then again on August 1, 1981 at the South Mountain Music Fair in West Orange NJ. The 2nd show is notable because its the same night that MTv debuted. Ms. Benatar's cover of the Rascal's tune You Better Run was the 2nd video ever played on MTv, following the most appropriate Video Killed The Radio Star. The 40 years passed - yes 4 whole decades - before I saw Pat again in November 2021 in Morristown.  That's the longest gap beteen seeing an artist since I first started attending concerts way back in 1976.  As I mentioned earlier this month, the next longest gaps are America - 38 years between my first America concert in 1978 and the 2nd one in 2016, John Hiatt - 34 years between seeing John in 1987 and then in 2021, and The Pretenders - 31 years betweem seeing them in 1987 and then again in 2018.
