Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young - 2002-03-08 - Washington DC (HQ Aud)

When they concluded their historic 1974 tour, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young would not go on the road again for over 25 years. Then, with the start of the new century, they launched 3 tours in 6 years. In 2000, they reunited for the first time since 1974 for the CSNY2K tour, the name being derived from the infamous Y2K computer scare that turned out to be much ado about nothing. In 2006, they launched the Freedom Of Speech tour, protesting the policies of then President George W. Bush. In between, in 2002, the quartet embarked on the Tour of America. a 40 concert run that started on February 6 in Detroit and ran until the final show on April 29 in Portland. This high quality audience recording (note there was a screamer near the taper who shows up loudly every now and then!) captures the band on March 8, 2002, a dozen years ago today, in Washington DC near the middle of the run. Download this one for a host of CSNY and CSN classics, as well some solo material and a stunning encore of 8 Miles High, a tune from Crosby’s days with The Byrds.

Paul McCartney - 1990-03-07 - Toky, Japan (SBD)

As I mentioned in earlier posts on this blog, you can find an abundance of high quality bootlegs from Sir Paul's 1989/1990 World Tour. This one captures McCartney on March 7, 1990, 2 dozen years ago today, from the Tokyo Dome. McCartney was back in Japan for the first time since he was busted for possession of marijuana when entering the country on January 16, 1980, for what was supposed to have been an 11 show tour by Wings. Sir Paul wound up in jail for 10 days and was eventually deported.   He was told he would never again be welcome in Japan.  More significantly, Wings not only never played another live set, but also ceased recording as a band.  Sir Paul would headline all future albums and tours with no mention of a backing band.  In any event, the Japanese clearly had a short memory, for a decade later McCartney was back to play live. This outstanding show features then new tunes from Paul's Flowers In The Dirt Album, hits from Wings and of course, classics from the Beatles. This one is a must have for your collection!

Jerry Garcia Band - 1983-03-05 - Santa Cruz, CA (SBD)

After the release of Go to Heaven in 1980,  the Grateful Dead waited 7 years to release their next studio album , In The Dark.  Jerry Garcia also took a break from solo studio work, recording just one album during that time period, Run For The Roses which was released in 1982. Garcia collaborated with long time song writing partner Robert Hunter on that disc.  The disc wasn’t one of Garcia’s finest efforts, though the title track became a staple of his live shows. Interestingly, Robert Hunter also incorporated that tune into his live shows.  Well, this month you’ll get to hear both play that tune live in March 1983, just a few months after the album’s release.  This soundboard recording captures Gracia live on March 5, 1983, 31 years ago today, in Santa Monica.  Download this one now, then come back on March 12 for Hunter’s live take on Run For The Roses.  By the way, the Hunter show contains another surprise you won’t want to miss.

John Mellencamp - 1988-03-04 - Dallas TX (SBD)

On August 24, 1987, John Mellencamp released the album Lonesome Jubilee, the follow up to his monster success, Scarecrow, which had gone to #2 on the Billboard charts in 1985. While not quite as successful as its predecessor, Lonesome Jubilee still climbed to #5 on the charts. In addition, it spawned 3 top 15 singles; Paper in Fire at #9, Cherry Bomb at #8 and Check It Out at #14. This soundboard recording captures Mellencamp on tour in support of Lonesome Jubilee on March 4, 1988, 26 years ago today. Download this one to hear why Mellencamp spent much of the 1980s at the top of the charts.

Cream - 1968-03-03 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

When Cream toured the US in the Spring of 1968, they established a record at the time for the longest tour by a British band in North America.  Yet even as they were filling venues from Califiornia to New York, the band was coming apart.  When the tour ended, basically so did Cream  The band members announced that they would dissolve the group by year, after a final farewell tour in the US and 2 dates at the Royal Albert Hall in London,  The tensions between Clapton, Baker and Bruce simply had become too much for the trio to endure.  This soundboard recording captures Cream on March 3, 1968, 46 years ago today, at Winterland in San Francisco. Download this one to hear the beginning of the end for one of rock’s legendary bands.

Van Morrison - 2006-03-02 - West Marin CA (HQ Aud)

For this post, I’m not sure what’s better – the story of how Lakercrazy, a good friend who sent me the show, acquired the tape or the story behind the concert itself! The start of both sagas goes back to 1980! One morning when driving to work, he missed his exit, got off the road to make a u-turn, and happened across a guy who needed a lift. To make a long story short, that chance occurrence developed into a long time friendship, with the 2 trading a host of bootlegs. Moreover, Laker’s new buddy lived in West Marin CA, right near a bar called Rancho Nicasio, which had hosted all kinds of rock concerts. In addition, his buddy’s brother worked at the place and had seen a dozens of incredible shows there. His favorite - a surprise Van Morrison appearance on March 2, 2006, 8 years ago today. Van decided to play Rancho Nicasio as a warm up for his Pay The Devil tour. The show was scheduled at 4 pm to help the band deal with the jet lag after flying in from Europe. He taped it using a mini super stealth recording set, then passed the tape to his brother, who sent it to Laker, who shared it with me! That’s the “cliff notes” version of both stories. The notes included with the download provide even more detail. Bottom line - this in a HQ audience recording of a private show by Van The Man in front of an audience of less than 200 people, making it a must have for your collection.

In my junior year in college, I became business manager of the school newspaper at Princeton.  I immediately worked out a deal with the folks at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic NJ.  They'd provide concert tickets to shows, we'd write reviews of those concerts and run ads for the Capitol.  Of course, as business manager, I got first choice of tickets.  Ok, I admit it, I probably abused my power ever so slightly.  But I was young and foolish, and the lure of getting concert tickets was too strong to resist! As a result, I wound up a numerous shows at the Capitol, including the one featured in this post from March 1, 1980, 34 years ago today!  This marked the 2nd time that I saw the Jerry Garcia Band, the first having been 3 years earlier on March 17, 1978.   Jerry was in fine form, playing outstanding versions of Catfish John, Sitting In Limbo, and That's Alright Mama, as well as a blistering version of Deal as an encore.  Only problem was the show was way too short - only 7 songs!  That's the problem with going to the early show!  Jerry and the band needed to save something for the folks showing up at 10 pm!  That said, it was still a good time for all Deadheads in attendance.  Download this FM broadcast and see for yourself!
