When Cream toured the US in the Spring of 1968, they established a record at the time for the longest tour by a British band in North America. Yet even as they were filling venues from California to New York, the band was coming apart. When the tour ended, basically so did Cream The band members announced that they would dissolve the group by year, after a final farewell tour in the US and 2 dates at the Royal Albert Hall in London, The tensions between Clapton, Baker and Bruce simply had become too much for the trio to endure. This soundboard recording captures Cream on March 7, 1968, 47 years ago today, at The Fillmore in San Francisco. Download this one to hear the beginning of the end for one of rock’s legendary bands.

Eric Clapton - 1985-03-05- London, UK (SBD)

As mentioned in earlier posts of this blog, 1985 was a year in which EC returned to worldwide prominence. Working with Phi Collins, he released the album, Behind The Sun, in March 1985, which was a huge improvement of his previous effort, 1983’s Money and Cigarettes. It was also his first album after spending time in rehab for his addiction to alcohol. Fueled by the single Forever Man, which received extensive play both on radio and on MTV, Behind The Sun climbed into the top 40 on the Billboard charts. The album also yielded the single, She's Waiting, which was included as part of EC’s set at Live Aid in July 1985. That Live Aid appearance, which also included White Room and Layla, showed the world a healthy and rejuvenated Slowhand, who could still play with the best of them. This soundboard recording captures Clapton at the start of that triumphant year, playing a show on his home turf in London on March 5, 1985, 3 decades ago this very day!

Jefferson Airplane - 1967-03-04 - Cafe Au Go Go (SBD)

In late 1966, the Jefferson Airplane recruited Grace Slick, and the rest, as they say, was history. Over the course of the next 6 months, the Airplane took center stage as one of the leading bands of the new psychedelic rock movement that emerged from San Francisco. Their breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, produced by the Dead's Jerry Garcia, and released in February 1967, spawned two huge hits, Somebody To Love and White Rabbit. The Airplane played at the Human Be-In in January and then at the Monterrey Pop Festival in June, helping inaugurate the Summer of Love, in which thousands of young people converged on the Haight-Ashbury district of San Francisco. The year 1967 was as one of those transcendent moments in rock history, with debut albums from Grateful Dead, The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, as well the release on June 1 of what many folks believe is the greatest album of all time, Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band by the Beatles. The Airplane were an integral part of this musical revolution and this soundboard, from March 4, 1967, 4 dozen years ago today, captures them just as they begin their rise to national prominence. Neil Young - 1976-03-03 - Nagoya, Japan (Ex Aud)

In November 1975, Neil Young released the album Zuma, which went to #25 on the Biullboard charts and featured the classic tune, Cortez The Killer. March 1976, Neil and Crazy Horse went out on the road in support of the disc, a 22 show run that travelled to Japan and Europe. The North American leg of the tour, scheduled for the summer of 1976 was postponed until the fall, however, as Neil took a break from the Horse to launch the ill-fated Stills-Young Band tour in June. The run with Stills would end after just 19 shows, with Neil breaking it off by sending Stephen a note that read “Dear Stephen, funny how some things that start spontaneously end that way. Eat a peach, Neil." In any event, this excellent audience recording captures he first night in Japan with the Horse, on March 3, 1976, 39 years ago today. It was the first tour with Frank "Poncho" Sampedro on guitar for Crazy Horse, replacing Danny Whitten who had died of an overdose, which, of course as the subject of the tune The Needle and the Damage Done.

Our first post of March is the prefect transition from February as it encompasses both month's themes - its from the 1970s (March's theme) and from Asia (part of February's theme). In both 1977 and 1978, Linda Ronstadt released albums that went to #1 on the Billboard Charts. Those 2 discs, Simple Dreams and Living In The USA, propelled Ms. Ronstadt to new heights of success and popularity. Rolling Stone magazine declared her "by far, America's best-known female rock singer". Billboard magazine presented her with 4 awards in 1978, including Female Artist of the Year. On the heals of those successes, she embarked on a world tour in 1979. This soundboard, from March 2, 1979, 46 years ago today, captures Ms. Ronstadt in Tokyo, near the start of that tour. During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the RatDog Revue. They played their first show as RatDog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day, This FM broadcast captures Ratdog in the 21st century, playing 2 sets at KPFA studios in Berkeley, CA on March 1, 2006, 9 years ago today.. According to the Ratdoig website, the band actually took calls from listeners during the set break!
