English Beat - 1982-10-03 - London, UK (FM)

The early 1980s found the punk and new wave movement branching out in all directions, with many bands using the newly launched MTv as a platform for reaching new audiences. The English Beat, a band that fused reggae, ska, pop and new wave influences in their music, is a perfect example. In 1982, they released their 3rd album, entitled Special Beat Service. The disc went to number 39 on the Billboard charts, in large part due to the singles I Confess and Save It For Later. Videos for both of those songs received solid airplay of MTv. I remember buying the album, and both songs had that “once you hear it, you can’t get it out of my head” quality about them (in a good way!). By 1983, however, the English Beat disbanded, with Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger forming General Public while Andy Cox and David Steele starting Fine Young Cannibals. This FM broadcast captures them right before their break up, on October 3, 1982, 33 years ago today.

In April 1984, Lou Reed released his 13th studio album, entitled New Sensations. The title was an apt one, because this disc showcased a new tone to Reed’s music. Unlike his previous work, the album was filled with upbeat tunes, including the incredibly catchy, almost pop sounding opening track, I Love You Suzanne. This soundboard recording features Reed on tour in support of that disc in Cleveland on October 3, 1984, 31 years ago today.

Bruce Springsteen  - 1985-10-02 - Los Angeles CA (HQ Aud)

While Bruce Springsteen made the cover of Time & Newsweek in 1975, and fans hail his 1978 tour as perhaps his best ever, it was in the 1980s that Springsteen truly became a commercial star, He rolled out 3 gigantic tours, in 1980-81, 1984-1985 and 1988, with the middle of those 3, in support of the Born in The USA album growing in size and scope as it progressed. It began as an arena tour in the US, but the popularity of the album, which spawned 7 top 10 singles, carried the tour into Europe, Australia and Asia, then back to the US for Springsteen’s first stadium shows. Unfortunately, there are almost no soundboard or FM recordings from the tour. This high quality audience recording captures Springsteen and the E Street band on the last night of the tour, in Los Angeles, on October 2, 1985, 3 decades ago this very day.

In 1983, Graham Nash briefly rejoined the Hollies in celebration of the band’s 20th anniversary. The group recorded a new album, What Goes Around, which failed to generate any interest or sales due to very weak material and an overabundance of synthesizer sound. The band’s fall tour in support of the disc also didn’t fare well, with many dates having to be cancelled or shifted to smaller venues due to poor ticket sales. For example, this soundboard recording captures The Hollies at Kings island Amusement Park near Cincinnati on October 2, 1983, 32 years ago today, not quite the largest or most prestigious venue in the area. That said, live Hollies shows are hard to find, so this one is a must have for your collection.

Warren Zevon - 1982-10-01 - Capitol Theatre, NJ (FM)

In 1978, Warren Zevon became an “overnight success”, when he released the album Excitable Boy, which in addition to the title track, featured Werewolves of London, Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, Johnny Strikes Up The Band and Lawyers, Guns and Money. Of course, success hadn’t come overnight at all, as Zevon had toiled for years in Los Angeles as a song writer, contributing tunes to albums by artists such as Linda Ronstadt and The Everly Brothers, as well as to the soundtrack of Midnight Cowboy. In addition, he had released 2 albums prior to Excitable Boy, though neither garnered much attention. Excitable Boy helped the general public understand what the rock community had know for years, namely that Zevon was an incredibly gifted song writer, able to cast a cynical eye on events, politics, celebrities and even himself. Unfortunately for Warren, success did not sit well with him, as it fueled his dependency on alcohol. As a result his next 2 albums were commercial failures, and Asylum terminated his record deal, which he only learned about by reading a column in Rolling Stone! Zevon then went on a drinking binge which almost killed him, before finally checking into rehab and kicking his addiction. This FM broadcast from October 1, 1982, 33 years ago today, captures Warren at the Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ, on tour in support of  the Envoy. Download this one to hear Zevon play one of his last shows before taking years off to battle and defeat his addiction to alcohol.
