Bruce Hornsby - 1996-04-04 - Aspen, CO (early) (SBD) 

The year 1996 marked the 10th anniversary of the release of Bruce Hornsby's Grammy Award winning debut album, The Way It Is. Rather than look backward, however, Hornsby continued to find ways to push his musical style forward. The cover of his recently released album, Hot House, featured an imagined jam session between bluegrass legend Bill Monroe and jazz legend Charlie Parker, two genres of music that Hornsby incorporated into the songs on that disc. The album also featured guest appearances by such diverse artists as Bela Fleck, Pat Metheney and the late Jerry Garcia. During this period, Hornsby's concerts took on a more improvisational tone, as he often took requests from the audience, rather than work from a set list. He would challenge himself to find ways to seamlessly string together diverse requests, turning the album versions of songs into more complex arrangements. As he says on his website, "I think of my songs as living beings that evolve and change and grow through the years." In his continuing quest to grow and evolve his music, Hornsby also participated in the Further Festival in 1996, one of the many Grateful Dead family endeavors launched in the wake of the death of Jerry Garcia. His band played along with Bob Weir & Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and others. Given all that, we figured it would be great to bring yo a host this month a host of shows from Hornsby's 1996 spring tour so you could see for yourself the evolution of his musical style. For part 2 of our Same Tour, Different show entry from Paul McCartney in 1990, we bring you something a bit different. While we don't have the full concert from Macca's stop in Arizona, we do have this soundboard recording of the sound check from April 4, 1990, 26 years ago today. You get to hear Sir Paul and the band jam out, as well as play some oldies such as Matchbox, Don't Let The Sun Catch You Crying and Hut The Road Jack! And to address you need for some Beatle tunes, we included some bonus tracks from the March 31 show in Berkeley.

Thank You For The Response To My Rant

My little rant yesterday touched off so many responses, all of which (except 1 - more on that later) were so supportive that I had to take a moment to do a few things:

1. First and foremost, a huge THANK YOU to all of you who responded in support of how I run this little place on the internet.  Folks like you are one of the reasons I have kept going for over 6 years!


2. Second, I know that most folks who come here are very supportive and that its just a handful of malcontents that leave ridiculous comments.  I'll be here posting and writing  for all of you who love this place for as long as I can! 


3. Third, please know I wasn't really all that upset by the comment.  I've grown thick skin running this site, and know you can never please everyone. I was, however, INCREDULOUS!  I should be used to it by now, but I'm still stunned that people think they have the right to criticize the way you approach your PASSION.  This isn't a job. This is a labor of love in which I get to share the MUSIC I LOVE (not some random music or the music someone else likes), as well as my experiences attending concerts for 4 decades!


4. Fourth, I had to mention that someone responded by thanking me for all I do, but then said he agreed with our original malcontent that I really weren't posting the right bands, giving me a long list of other bands that should be on the site. I deleted that comment but I'll respond here: WHAT DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND - IT'S MY SITE - I POST THE MUSIC I LIKE.  If you think other music should be shared, start you own blog and spend hours downloading shows, checking sound quality, getting artwork, writing posts, re uploading those show, etc.  I won't hold my breath waiting!


5. Fifth and finally, for those folks who say I post too much Grateful Dead music, well, get used to it because its not changing. I saw the Dead over 70 times in concert and they are one of my favorite bands. I know they are not everyone''s cup of tea, but to me they are "a band beyond description, like Jehovah's favorite choir". to borrow a line from the Music Never Stops.  That said, while we have about 375 Dead and Dead related (Garcia, Weir, etc) shows on this site, that's out of a total of 2800 posts.  So over 2400 posts, which is over 85% of all the posts on the site, feature music from other bands.  In addition, as you all know from a post earlier this year, we're committed to expanding that roster, having already brought you shows from Bobby Darin, Duty Springfield, Glen Campbell, The Youngbloods, Blue Oyster Cult, The Firm & The Alarm, with our debut posts from Counting Crows, Little Village, Gin Blossoms, and 10,000 Maniacs on their way in the months to come.  All in all, we have over 200 different bands posted on So Many Roads.

Thanks again to all of you for your support.  On May 11, we''l celebrate 6 1/2 years of running So Many Roads. To borrow from a Sam Cooke song (Let The Good Times Roll), "We're going to stay here till we soothe our soul, if it takes all night long!"  Enjoy the tunz!

Robert Hunter - 2003-04-02 - Chicago, IL (SBD)

Never forget that when the Grateful Dead entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Robert Hunter, the group’s long time lyricist, was included as part of the band! And last year, Hunter and Jerry Garcia, were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. This soundboard recording captures Hunter on April 2, 2003, 13 years ago today, in Chicago. How We Choose What We Post At So Many Roads

So, I need to rant a little bit today because someone posted the following comment:

"As a bootleg collector my entire life, I keep tabs on what you post every day through the link on T.U.B.E. While I admire your dedication and the concept of your blog, I am constantly baffled by your choices, given the amount of recordings that are available on the Internet to post. Yes, I understand your criteria that this is your personal taste in music... but really. When you can't find a show for that day, posting ANOTHER lame Dead show that can be streamed at Archive.org? Come on, you can do better, even if it means a slight drop in quality. Maybe try posting something you wouldn't normally listen to? It's seems like there's a TON of music out there (even from the past 20 years) that you are completely ignoring. Again, I hate being negative, but this has been bugging me for some time and I had to say it. "

He's baffled by my choices but readily acknowledges that my criteria is my own personal taste in music. So then how the hell can he be baffled? He says he hates being negative but then proceeds to post a host of negative comments.  Do folks actually read what they write before they post it?

Bottom line -  I spend hours each day of my free time, without any pay, working on this blog. Do es anyone really think I need someone telling me I can do better?  To be blunt, its my music blog - I'll post what I like, when I want and how I want.  And if some folks don't like that, then they can go elsewhere.

As I've said on numerous occasions, we have 3 criteria when it comes to posting

1. Sound Quality: Basically, no show gets posted unless the sound quality is top notch. 


2. The Date: Given that this blog has evolved to feature a this date in history” approach, the show we post each day has to be from that day! 


3. My Taste In Music: In the end, I post shows that feature music I enjoy. You see lots of shows at So Many Roads from the Grateful Dead, The Beatles, CSNY, Eric Clapton the Allman Brothers, etc. because that’s what I listen to every day. I’m not a fan of heavy metal, grunge or progressive rock, so you don’t see any posts from bands that play those styles of music. I like the blues, but in small doses, which is why you only get occasional posts from artists such as Muddy Waters, Robert Cray or Stevie Ray Vaughn. I’m into live music, not studio outtakes, so you’ll see very few of the latter type of posts here at So Many Roads. I know that my musical tastes may differ from others, which is why I link to sites such as JustDave’s Place, where you can often find music I may not post. By the way, the number of times I post a band usually reflects how much I enjoy their music but not always. You’d see far more Beatles posts, for example, but unfortunately, there are far too few high quality concert recordings available. Same goes for The Band from the Robbie Robertson era, Rockpile and Derek & The Dominos, just to name a few.

It's that simple.  If you're not into the above,  that's fine.  Everyone is entitled to their personal taste in music and I fully respect that.  But please, don't tell me that I could do better or that my blog isn't any good because I don't post what you personally like. I just have no tolerance for that.

Anyway, that's today's daily rant.  Now, back to our regularly scheduled tunz!

Paul McCartney - 1990-04-01 - Berkeley, CA (SBD)

The Paul McCartney World Tour, which launched on September 26, 1989, quickly lived up to its name.  After a run of shows in Europe, Paul then flew to North America for a series of shows in November and December in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, Montreal and New York.   Then it was back to England for 17 shows in January in Birmingham and London.  He returned to the US in February, only to fly to Tokyo in March for 6 shows.  So, when he played Berkeley Memorial Stadium on April 1, 1990, 26 years ago today, it marked his 3rd visit to the US during the same tour.  (By the way, he'd be back to the US for a 4th time in July, after stops in Scotland, England and Brazil.)  This soundboard recording captures almost the entire Berkeley show, with the exception of the first 3 songs (Figure of Eight, Jet and Got To Get You Into My Life).  As mentioned in other posts of shows from this tour, while Paul played numerous songs from his recently released Flowers In The Dirt album, the big news was that for the first time in his solo career, Paul truly embraced his Beatles heritage.  Download this one to hear Sir Paul perform some Beatles classics, such as Hey Jude and get Back, live for the first time ever, then come back a few days for part 2 of this Same Tour, Different show entry.
