Stephen Stills has played at the Bridge School on 8 occasions - in 1986, 1988, 1989, 2000, 2003. 2005. 2010 and 2013. Not one of those sets, however, was as a solo artist. Rather, all were as either part of CSNY or Buffalo Springfield.  Of course, given the on again, of again relationship between Stills and Neil Young, which stretches back 50 year, nothing would surprise me when it comes to to those 2 talented but voltile guitarists.

Today's post actually goes back to one of those off again moments between Stephen & Neil. In fact, when Stills went on tour in the fall of 1976, he was on the outs not just with Young, but with Crosby & Nash as well. Neil had left him without warning in the middle of the Stills-Young Band tour earlier that year. Crosby & Nash were angry with him (and Neil) for wiping their vocals from early recordings of the Long May You Run album, after the pair had to leave the recording session to fulfill other contractual obligations. This soundboard recording captures Stills flying solo, therefore, before he again made nice with his former bandmates, inPortland on October 4, 1976, 4 decades ago this very day.

Here's another one from an artist who has appeared at both Farm Aid and The Bridge School. Now, we tend to think of the music at Farm Aid in terms of its founders, songs about the heartland from artists such as Neil, Willie and Mellencamp. As we saw last month, however, the array of artists who have played Farm Aid over its near 30 year history represent every genre of rock. The Farm Aid show held in Tinley Park on October 3, 1998, 18 years ago today, is a perfect example of that diversity. This FM broadcast captures the King of Surf Rock, the leader of the Beach Boys himself, the legendary Brian Wilson, doing a solo set on behalf of America’s farmers. Brian also did his part for Neil's other charity, appearing at the Bridge School benefit on 3 occaisions, in 1999, 2006 and 2014.
