While best known for his work with Bruce Springsteen, Miami Steve Van Zandt, or Little Steven, had a solo career produced that produced numerous highlights  Among those are his critically acclaimed 1st album from 1982, Men Without Women, and his anti-apartheid anthem, Sun City, in which 49 artists, including Bruce, U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Pete Townshend, and Lou Reed, pledged to never play the South African resort. His solo music also grew more and more political during the mid to late 1980’s, with his 1987 disc, Freedom – No Compromise, focusing on US transgressions in Central America and South Africa, as well as against Native Americans. This soundboard recording captures Little Steven on tour in support of that album in Sweden  on December 4, 1987, 29 years ago today.

Santana – 1992-12-04 – Santiago, Chile (SBD)

In May 1992, Carlos Santana released his 16th studio album, Milagro. Milagro, which means "miracle" in Spanish, was dedicated to the lives of Miles Davis and Bill Graham, both of whom passed away in late 1991. Unfortunately for Carlos, the album became his first not to chart in the Billboard Top 100. The 1990’s were a difficult time for Santana, as his commercial appeal was at its absolute lowest point. That would not change until the last year of the decade, when he returned to the top of the charts with the album Supernatural and the single Smooth. All those events, though, were in the future when Carlos took the stage in Chile on December 4, 1992, 2 dozen years ago today. If his album sales weren’t quite what they had been in the past, his playing most certainly was as good as ever, as this soundboard recording clearly reveals. In June 1981, The Go Go's released the single, We Got The Beat, and the accompanying video became a mainstay om the then fledgling MTV channel. A month later, the band released the album Beauty and The Beat, which steadily climbed the charts until it reached the top spot, where it remained for 6 weeks. The Go Go's had taken the music world by storm, and made history in the process. Beauty and The Beat became the first album entirely written and performed by an all-female band to top the charts. Today the disc is recognized as one of the cornerstones of the new wave movement. This soundboard broadcast captures them during those heady days on December 4, 1981, 35 years ago today in Palos Verdes Estates.

In September 1992, 10,000 Maniacs released the album Our Time in Eden, which featured the singles These Are Days, Candy Everybody Wants and Few and Far Between.The disc would be the last that the band would record with original lead singer Natalie Merchant. While recording of the disc in 1991, Merchant had informed the other member s of the group that she would be leaving with the next 2 years to start a solo career.  This soundboard recording captures 1000 Maniacs on their last tour with Merchant on December 2, 1992, s dozen years ago today, in Kansas City.  Just 8 months later, on August 5, 1993, Merchant formally announced her departure from the band on MTv.

Eric Clapton & Steve Winwood - 2011-12-02 - Tokyo, Japan (IEM Matrix)

Few bands stayed together for less time, yet produced as lasting a legacy, as did Blind Faith. They recorded one album, which when released in August 1969, immediately went to #1 on the Billboard charts. They toured in support of the album that same month, the band's only live performances, except for their debut gig in Hyde Park in July. Since the group had less than an hour's worth of material, they also had to play tunes from Eric Clapton's days with Cream and Steve Winwood's time with Traffic. Eric was unhappy that the band seemed to be evolving into Cream, part 2, and by October, Blind Faith was no more. With the exception of 1973’s Rainbow Concert, Clapton and Winwood would not reunite for a live performance for almost 4 decades. Then, on May 19, 2007, about halfway through Winwood's set at the UK’s Country Side Rocks Festival, EC strolled on stage to recreate history. That night's collaboration was followed up by appearances together at Clapton's Crossroads festival in July 2007, 3 nights at Madison Square Garden in February 2008 and joint tours in 2009, 2010 & 2011. This IEM Matrix recording captures the duo during the 2011 tour, in Japan on December 2, 5 years ago today, By the way, it you’re wondering why Blind Faith never reformed - or why the Cream reunion in 2005 lasted just a few shows - then you should check out the Showtime documentary Beware Mr. Baker. That program includes interviews with a host of rock legends such as EC, Winwood, Mickey Hart, Jack Bruce, Charlie Watts and Carlos Santana who all express the same frank opinion of Baker. He was a genius on the drums, bur a vile and nasty individual who alienated family and friends.

Jorma Kaukonen - 1985-12-01 - Chicago IL (SBD)

In 1979, Jorma Kaukonen, legendary guitarist for the Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna, flirted with punk and new wave music, forming a band called Vital Parts, covering his body with tattoos and cutting his hair and dying it orange and purple. Fortunately, after a few years, Jorma came to his senses and went back to doing what he did best, playing rock and roll, especially acoustic guitar.  In 1985, he reunited with Jack Casady to reform Hot Tuna. Also that year, he released a solo acoustic album, Too Hot To handle and went on tour in support of that disc. This soundboard recording captures him during that tour on December 1, 1985, 31 years ago today in Chicago, where's he joined by the one and only David Bromberg.

Bruce Hornsby - 1988-12-01 - London, UK (FM)

In May 1988, Bruce Hornsby released Scenes From The Southside,the follow up to his stunning debut album, The Way it Is. On this disc, Hornsby reaches into his Virginia roots for inspiration, with lyrics that conjured up images of small town Americana, all supported by virtuoso piano performances. The album went platinum, and critics noted that songs on the disc had more spacious musical arrangements, allowing for more expressive solos from Hornsby. The single, The Valley Road, would become his third Top 10 hit, peaking at number 5. Huey Lewis and The News would cover another song from the album, Jacob's Ladder, and take it to number #1. The Show Goes On would be featured in the Ron Howard movie, Backdraft, giving Hornsby additional national exposure. This FM broadcast captures Hornsby in London on tour in support of the album on December 1, 1988, 28 years ago today.
