Grateful Dead - 1991-06-06 - Noblesville, IN (SBD)

The Grateful Dead were at the center of the musical and cultural revolution that highlighted the Summer of Love in 1967. The band released their debut album that year, and played festivals such as the Human Be-In and of course, Monterrey Pop. Their psychedelic sound became synonymous with San Francisco, as did the image of hippies and the Flower Power Generation. Around 100,000 people traveled to San Francisco in the summer of 1967 and the media was right behind them. On July 7, Time Magazine featured a cover story entitled, The Hippies: The Philosophy of a Subculture, casting a spotlight on the Haight-Ashbury district of the city. Of course, the Dead were squarely in the middle of that as well, as the band was living at 710 Ashbury.  Since the Dead were such a part of 1967 (and of my live concert experiences), we decided to bring you shows this month from each decade they performed.  You'll get their 1967 set at Monterrey Pop later this month, as well as concrts from the 1970s and 1980. So today and tomorrow we visit the 1990s  The year 1991 may have been the last peak for the band, before Bruce Hornsby left in March 1992 and Garcia's health deteriorated, While Fall 1991 tends to get most of the love, the Spring run had plenty of stellar moments. The Doors - 1970-06-05 - Seattle, WA (SBD)

The may have been from Los Angeles and not San Francisco, but The Doors were an integral part of 1967 and the Summer Of Love.  They released their self titled debut album early that year, and by the time summer rolled around, it had reached #2 on the Billboard charts, blocked from the top spot by the one of the most famous album in rock history (more on that disc later this month!). The single Light My Fire would climb all the way to #1. In September, the band released their 2nd album, Strange Days, which went to #3 on the Billboard charts. While the album didn’t yield a single as successful as Light My Fire, both People Are Strange and Love Me Two Times made it into the Billboard Top 25. That same month, on September 17, The Doors gave a memorable performance of Light My Fire on The Ed Sullivan Show. Before the show, network executives asked that the word “higher” be removed in favor of "better', to avoid any suggestion of drug use. While the group initially agreed, once the band hit the stage, Jim Morrison, in classic 1960s example of the counter-culture defying the establishment, left the original lyric in place. A furious Ed Sullivan canceled another six appearances that had been planned, banning The Doors from the show forever. This soundboard captures The Doors live in Seattle 3 years later, on June 5, 1970, 47 years ago today.

Van Morrison - 1989-06-04 - Hamburg, Germany (FM) 

In 1967, Van Morrison left Them and embarked on a solo career. During his first studio sessions for Bang Records, Morrison recorded a song which 50 years later, still may be the one he's most identified with.  Brown Eyed Girl, captured on the 22nd take on his first day of recording, was released in June 1967, as the Summer Of Love dawned, and went to #10 on the Billboard charts. And while that was quite an auspicious debut, as Morrison sings in Someone Like You, "baby, the best was yet to come". For example, over 2 decades later, in June 1989, Van released the album Avalon Sunset, which when paired with Poetic Champions Compose from 2 years earlier, comprise some of his best work since his heyday in the 1970s. Those 2 discs yielded tunes such as Someone Like You, Queen Of The Slipstream, When Will I Ever Learn to Live in God, Whenever God Shines His Light, and Have I Told You Lately, all of which now have taken a prominent place in his vast catalog of music. Just about the time Avalon Sunset hit the stores, Van played in Hamburg on June 4, 1989, 28 years ago today, as captured in this FM broadcast.

Jerry Garcia - 1984-06-03 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

San Francisco became synonymous with the Summer of Love, and no band symbolized the cultural changes taking place in the city by the bay more than the Grateful Dead. They were the house band for ken Kesey's Electric Kool Aid Acid tests and lived at 710 Ashbury in the city's  Haight Ashbury district, home of the hippies. And their spiritual and musical leader, guitarist Jerry Garcia, was the poster child for the counter culture. Garcia was nicknamed Captain Trips, as he was the embodiment of the cultural, musical and psychedelic experimentation of the times.  The year 1967 featured a multitude of classic albums and Garcia was heavily involved in two of them, the Dead's debut disc and Surrealistic Pillow, the break though album from the other pillar of San Francisco's psychedelic sound, the Jefferson Airplane. Jerry is credited as a "spiritual advisor" on Surrealistic Pillow, though, according to the Airplane's Jorma Kaukonen, Garcia, for all intents and purposes, served as the producer for the disc. For Garcia, 1967 was the start of a long strange trip that would be filled with musical and personal triumphs and tragedies, until we lost him way too soon in 1995. This soundboard recording captures Jerry going back to his acoustic folk roots, in his hometown on June 3, 1984, 33 years ago today.

Dave Mason - 1979-06-02 - Berkeley, CA (FM)

In April 1967, Dave Mason joined Steve Winwood, Jim Capaldi and Chris Wood to form Traffic.  As the Summer of Love dawned in June 1967, the band released its first single, Paper Sun, which went to #5 on the charts in the UK, though it barely cracked the top 100 at #94 in the US. The band set to work its first album, Mr. Fantasy which was released in December 1967, but by that time Mason had left the band. He then returned in the middle of recording their follow up disc in 1968. After the band broke up and reformed, Mason rejoined for a brief period in 1971, only to depart the band once again soon after. This FM broadcast captures Mason over 2 decades after the Summer Of Love, during the height of his success as a solo artist, on June 2, 1979, 38 years ago today. He's joined  by some very special friends, including 2 veterans from 1967, Stephen Stills and Joe Cocker. Cocker sings lead on Feeling Alright, a song originally written by Mason, and recorded by Traffic!

Santana - 1986-06-01 - Kuruizawa, Japan (SBD)

In the summer of 1967, Carlos Santana was living in San Francisco, the epicenter of the summer of love, trying to start music career while washing dishes at the Tick Dock diner to earn a living. Carlos describes the time as follows: "The summer of 1967 was the Summer of Love in most people’s minds. (…) For me and many musicians, this was also when we started to feel that the resonance of our convictions could change the world. For me, the summer of 1967 was also the summer of decisions. One day I saw the Grateful Dead stop by the Tic Tock in a limousine. (…) I saw them from the sink where I was washing dishes and said to myself, “I shouldn’t be doing this anymore.” (…) The other decision I had to make was to finally leave home. (…) Then I dropped LSD and had a bad trip. (…) I felt like I actually gave birth to myself that day. I went from believing the world was coming to an end to figuring out what I had to do to stop that from happening. (…) I felt like that the whole experience had given me power and brought me to my purpose in life. Stan and Ron listened to me talk. They heard the conviction. “We’ll be your managers,” they said. (…) Stan said one more thing. “You have to get rid of Danny and Gus---that’s the way it is, man. They are not bad people, but they’re not committed. They’re weekend musicians; you’re not. We can tell that. We’ll drop everything for you, but you got to drop them.” (…) I knew they were right, but Danny and Gus were my oldest friends in San Francisco. Making us late at the Fillmore kind of sealed it, but if anybody was going to tell them, I would have to be the one. (…) I said good-bye to Danny and Gus, and I finally said good-bye to living with my mom and dad and moved in with Stan and Ron on Precita Avenue. That was the nest that nurtured the birth of the band. (…) That really was the beginning of Santana right there."  Two tears later, Santana would play an incendiary set at Woodstock, and the rest as they say is history.  This soundboard recording captures them almost 2 decades years after the Summer of Love, in Japan on June 1, 1986, 31 years ago today.
