Peter Frampton - 2012-03-07 - Mesa, AZ (SBD)

Few discs in rock history have impacted rock & roll quite like the one Peter Frampton released on on January 6, 1976, That 2 disc live album, entitled Frampton Comes Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. Framptom Comes Alive virtually took on a life of its own. The album defined Frampton for the rest of his career, casting a shadow over all his future endeavors. More significantly, the disc came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album. Warren Zevon - 1994-03-06- Aspen CO (SBD)

After achieving commercial success in the late 1970s and early 1980’s, Warren Zevon’s career took a host of twists and turns. He battled alcoholism and obsessive compulsive disorder. He Zevon also served as musical coordinator and occasional guitarist for an ad-hoc rock music group called the Rock Bottom Remainders, a collection of writers performing rock and roll standards at book fairs and other events. The group included Stephen King, Dave Barry, Matt Groening and Amy Tan, just to name a few. He occasionally filled in for Paul Schaffer as bandleader for David Letterman’s Late Night Show. And of course, he released albums and continued to tour. This soundboard recording captures Zevon in Aspen on March 6, 1994, 2 dozen years ago today. Of course, less than 10 years later, on September 7, 2003, we’d lose Warren at the all to young age of 56, due to cancer, but not before he left us with a stunning farewell album, entitled The Wind, which featured guest appearances by Bruce Springsteen, Don Henley, Jackson Browne, Joe Walsh, David Lindley, Emmylou Harris and Tom Petty, just to name a few. Months after his death, Zevon would win 2 Grammys for the album, the only ones of his legendary 30 year career.

Grateful Dead - 1972-03-05 - San Francisco CA (SBD)

For the Grateful Dead, 1972 will always be remembered for the legendary run of shows in Europe in April and May of that year, as well as the concert in Venetta on August 27, which many say rivals Barton Hall 1977 for the title of best Dead show ever. In addition, the Academy of Music run in March and the brief September tour have spawned numerous official releases, attesting to the quality of the music being played throughout the year.  So, little wonder that the band's March 5 1972 concert in San Francisco, 46 years ago today as captured in this soundboard recording, often gets over looked.  The show, however, features both Pigpen and Keith Godchaux on keyboards, just as The Europe 72 run did, so it's a harbinger of the things to come. Moreover, it would be the last time Pigpen played a concert in the Bay Area, as his health worsened after the Europe run, forcing his eventual retirement from the band prior to his passing in 1973.

The band released the album Yellow Moon that year, and the set list feature several tunes from that disc, including the title track.

Marshall Crenshaw - 1985-03-02 - Utica, NY (HQ Audience)

As I have mentioned in numerous posts, Marshall Crenshaw is not only one of my favorite rockers, but also vastly under rated as a singer and song writer.  His first two albums are pop classics.  Despite the critcal acclaim those 2 discs received, however, Crenshaw never achieved mainstream success.  In fact, by 1985, rather than having graduated from clubs to concert halls, he was actually playing even smaller venues. This high quality audience recording captures Crenshaw on March 2, 1985, 33 years ago today, at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica, NY!  Madison Square Garden it is not! Maybe that's actually for the best, however, as Crenshaw's musical style seems far better suited for small initiate venues such as the one in this recording. While this 20 song set features some songs from his then just released album Downtown, including Little Wild One and Shake Up Their Minds,  the bulk of the show is comprised of music from his first 2 albums.  If you're not familiar with Crenshaw, then download this show and see why critics have dubbed songs such as Cynical Girl, Whenever You're On My Mind, Someday Someway, and For Her Love as pop classics.  By the way, my thanks to my buddy Laker for finding this wonderful gem of a show for me!

Plant & Page - 1995-03-01 - Atlanta GA (FM)

After Led Zeppelin broke up in 1980 in the wake of the death of drummer John Bonham, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page each pursued other musical interests. In 1994, however, all that changed MTv approached Robert Plant to do an episode of the then wildly popular Unplugged series. Plant, not wanting to carry the banner of Led Zep's legacy alone, asked Page to join him. The passage of time seemed to heal any old wounds, and the duo again felt the musical connection that had made them rock legends. They taped the episode on August 25 and 26, pairing Led Zep classics with 4 new tunes. The show aired on October 12 to an overwhelmingly enthusiastic response. As a result, the duo not only released the Unplugged sessions as an album entitled No Quarter: Jimmy Page and Robert Plant Unledded, but also agreed to tour in 1995. This soundboard captures Plant and Page during that tour on March 1, 1995, 23 yer ago today, in Atlanta.
