Peter Frampton - 2009-09-04 - Cleveland OH (SBD)

2009 - Few discs in rock history have impacted rock & roll quite like the one Peter Frampton released on on January 6, 1976, That 2 disc live album, entitled Frampton Comes Alive came from out of nowhere to take the music world by storm. With songs such as Baby I Love Your Way, Show Me the Way, and the mammoth 14 minute long, Do You Feel Like We Do, which featured Frampton's distinctive talk box guitar, Frampton Comes Alive climbed to the top of the Billboard Charts, sold over 6 million copies, and was voted album of the years by readers of Rolling Stone. The album was so popular that it was still in the #14 position in the charts at the end of 1977, almost 2 years after its release. Framptom Comes Alive virtually took on a life of its own. The album defined Frampton for the rest of his career, casting a shadow over all his future endeavors. More significantly, the disc came to define rock and roll in the mid 1970's. FM rock stations began to play more album oriented rock (AOR), as Frampton's album and other similar work came to be called. Other bands attempted to copy Frampton Comes Alive, but unfortunately the results were usually excessive, over produced, and downright boring. Other rebelled against the AOR sound and movements such as disco, punk and new wave emerged. All that, from 1 album. If you want to read more about the impact of Frampton Comes Alive and the dramatic changes in music in 1976, pick up the book, I Hate New Music, by Dave Thompson.  Frampton never again reached that level of success, but he remained a mainstay on the concert circuit for the next 40 years, until launching a farewell tour earlier this year. This  soundboard recording captures him in Cleveland, on September 4, 2009, a decade ago this very day.

2010 - On June 30, 2009, U2 launched 360 degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales This soundboard recording captures the band during that tour  on September 3, 2010, 9 years ago today, in Athens.

Bob Weir & Ratdog - 2001-09-03 - Boise, ID (SBD)

2001 - During the late 1980s, Bob Weir teamed up with bassist Rob Wasserman and the duo toured for seven years under names such as Weir/Wasserman and Scaring the Children. In 1994, Weir and Wasserman participated in the Woodstock '94 festival. Jay Lane was added on drums and Matthew Kelly on guitar and harmonica in 1995. They played their first show as a full band on April 22, 1995, billed as Friends of Montezuma and then as the Ratdog Revue. They played their first show as Ratdog on August 8, 1995. Just 1 night later, Ratdog would play an emotional show in tribute to Jerry Garcia, Weir’s brother in music and band mate in the Grateful Dead, who passed away that same day,  Weir continued with Ratdog after the end of the Grateful Dead, touring regularly for almost 20 yeras, though recently he has spent time on other projects such as the Campfire Band and the Wolf Bros.  This FM broadcast captures Weir & Ratdog on September 3, 2001, 18 years ago today, in Boise.

1991 - As the 1980s became the 1990s, the Allman Brothers, who had disbanded in 1982, once again revived their career. After a few reunion shows in 1986, the Allmans officially reformed in 1989, as the success of Greg Allman’s tune I’m No Angel, coupled with the release of the Dreams box set to commemorate the group’s 20th anniversary, generated renewed public interest in the band. Original members Allman, Dickey Betts, Jai Johanny "Jaimoe" Johanson and Butch Trucks were joined by new members Warren Haynes, Johnny Neel and Allen Wood, infusing the band with additional energy. Moreover, Betts and Haynes gave the band a dynamic one two punch on guitar, reminiscent of the glory days of the early 1970s. This soundboard recording captures the band in Wantagh on September 3, 1991, 28 years ago today.

1995 - While the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame foundation began in 1983 and inducted its first class in 1986, the organization didn’t have a physical structure to honor the inductees and tell the story of their music until 1995. The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and Museum opened in the city of Cleveland on September 1,  1995. The next night, September 2, 1995, 2 dozen years ago this very day, Cleveland Stadium hosted an All Star concert to commemorate the event, as captured in this FM Broadcast.  We actually posted an abbreviated version of this show a few years ago but now, by combining 2 sources, we have the concert in its entirety.

Stax Records 50th Anniversary Concert - 2017-09-01 - London, UK (FM)

2017 - Founded in 1957, Memphis-based Stax Records was synonymous with Southern Soul - a distinctive blend of funk, gospel and R&B that brought listeners across America together at a time of racial conflict and political unrest. From humble beginnings in a garage the label went on to produce some of the greatest soul artists: Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, and Sam and Dave, to mention a few. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stax/Volt Revue’s first tour of the UK,  some of the label'ss greatest surviving artists came to London: for a celebratory concert at the Royal Albert Hall.ay.  Joining Eddie Floyd, Sam Moore, Booker T Jones, Steve Cropper and William Bell. was them is Tom Jones, a longtime fan of the Stax sound, which influenced his own style.This FM broadcast captures that historic show from September 1, 2017, just 2 years ago today.

Allman Brothers Band - 1981-09-01 - Santa Fe, NM (SBD)

1981 - In late 1981, the Allman Brothers were a band in deep trouble. Their record label, Capricorn, had collapsed about a year earlier due to financial issues,. In addition, Southern Rock was losing popularity amidst the punk and new wave revolution. Moreover,  in fighting, especially between Greg Allman and Dickie Betts, was tearing the band apart. This soundboard recording captures the band in the midst of that tumultuous time in Santa Fe on September 1, 1981, 38 years ago today. Some 4 months later, after a January appearance on Saturday Night Live, the band would break up, and remain apart over 4 years, until a reunion in 1986 at the Crackdown Concerts in New York.
