ITALY -  In April 2006, Bruce Springsteen released the album We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions", featuring his interpenetration of 13 folks songs made popular by activist and musician Pete Seeger. Springsteen went on the road in support of the album, having much more success in selling out venues in Europe than in the US.  In fact, Springsteen's May run in Europe was so successful that he went back across the pond in October/November 2006 to play 27 concerts in 10 different countries This FM broadcast captures part of his show in Verona Italy on October 5, 2006, 13 years ago today.

ENGLAND - In Fall 2000, Bob Dylan made his 2nd trip to Europe that year (the first had been in May) playing 18 shows in 8 countries between September 13 and October 6.  He ended the tour with 2 shows at Wembley Arena in London.  This excellent audience recording captures the first night at Wembley, the penultimate concert of the tour, On Octiber 5, 2000, 19 years ago today.

Paul McCartney – 1989-10-03 – Hamburg (Ex Aud)

GERMANY -  late 1980s saw some of the classic rockers from the 1960s and 1970s return to touring, and none was bigger than Sir Paul McCartney. When McCartney went on tour in 1989 for the first time since a very short Wings outing 10 years earlier, expectations ran high. Paul warmed up with 2 rehearsals at the London Playhouse, then he headed off to Europe. This was Paul’s first tour under his own name (previous solo tours were all booked as Wings) and the first one where he played a substantial number of Beatle tunes. He also featured numerous songs from his recently released and critically acclaimed album, Flowers In The Dirt, including My Brave Face, This One, Rough Ride, We Got Married, Put It There and Figure of Eight. While the new songs sounded good in concert, they weren’t the reason the tour sold out at almost every stop. Folks came to hear Paul recapture his Beatles days, and he did not disappoint. Over half the set list was dedicated to Beatle songs, including Yesterday, Let it Be and Hey Jude. This excellent audience tape captures Paul in Hamburg, the 5th show of the tour, on October 3, 1989, 3 decades years ago today.

U2 - 2010-10-02 - Coimbra, Portugal  (IEM)

PORTUGAL - On June 30, 2009, U2 launched the 360 Degrees tour, which encompassed 110 shows over a 2 year stretch. The tour was undertaken in support of the band's then new album, No Line On The Horizon. Why a name for the tour that was different from the album title? U2 decided to name the tour after their unique stage configuration allowed the audience to almost completely surround the stage. To accommodate that set up, a massive four-legged structure nicknamed "The Claw" was built above the stage, with the sound system and a cylindrical video screen atop it. The tour became the highest grossing by any rock band in history, with $736 million in ticket sales This IEM recording captures the band during that tour on October 2, 2010, 9 years ago today, in Portugal.

ENGLAND - In 2008,the late, great Glen Campbell returned to Capitol Records after an absence of 15 years.  He released his 60th album that year, entitled Meet Glen Campbell, which featured him covering tunes by such diverse artists Travis, U2, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Jackson Browne, and Foo Fighters. The first single, a cover of Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life), was released in July. The disc went to #27 on the Billboard Country charts and received strong critical reviews from Allmusic, the Daily News and the Houston Chronicle. This FM Broadcast captures Campbell on tour in support of the album, in London, on October 2, 2008, a dozen years ago today.

The Police - 1983-10-01 - Barcelona, Spain (SBD)

SPAIN - The Police’s 1981 Ghost in the Machine album tour put them on the map as rock super stars. Their tour in support of that disc made them the first new wave/punk band to graduate from playing clubs to headlining at 20,000 seat arenas such as Madison Square Garden on New York, where I saw them January 22, 1982. The follow up album, Synchronicity, released in June 1983, was another blockbuster, going to number 1 on the US and UK charts, and winning the band a Grammy Award for best rock performance by a duo or group. The album spawned 4 top 20 singles: Synchronicity II at #16, Wrapped Around Your Finger at #8, King of Pain at #3 and Every Breathe You Take, which went to the #1 spot and stayed there for 8 weeks. Despite all that success (or maybe because of it?), the band was beginning to come apart. The album was recorded with each member of the band in a separate room, ostensibly for engineering reasons, but in hindsight it is apparent that the arrangement symbolized that the band was no longer a cohesive unit. Moreover, during the recording of Every Breath You Take, Sting and Andy Summers came to blows in the studio. When the band went on the road in July 1983 in support of the album, no one knew that it would be the final world tour for the band (with the exception of 3 shows in 1986) until 2007! This soundboard recording captures the band 3 dozen years ago today on October 1, 1983 – a day before Sting’s birthday – in Barcelona, Spain.
