I've seen the Pretenders 3 times - once in October 1981 at the Palladium soon after the release of their 2nd album, then in April 1987 at Radio City Music Hall, a time when the band had achieved mainstream success with the albums Learning To Crawl and Get Close, and finally last year in April at the Morristown Performing Arts Center, as a veteran band still doing what they love. This FM broadcast captures The Pretenders on November 3, 1994, a quarter century ago today, a few months after the release of the band's sixth album entitled Last of The Independents. The album marked the return to the band of drummer Martin Chambers, who had been fired by Chrissie Hynde 8 years earlier.

Los Lobos - 1990-11-03 - Lone Star Cafe, New York, NY (FM)

I've seen Los Lobos live twice, on back to back nights in July 1989 as the lead in band for the Grateful Dead at Giants Stadium. Incredibly, the band did not join the Dead on stage either night, but at the Neville Brothers sat in during Iko Iko on night 2!

Los Lobos rose to national prominence  in June 1987 when their cover of La Bamba was released as a single and became a number 1 hit. Then, just a week later, the band released By Light of The Moon, an album of original material, whose theme focused on how and why the American dream eluded so many of the country’s working class. The disc received rave critical reviews, with Rolling Stone, All Music, and Robert Christgau, just to name 3, all singing the album’s praises. This FM Broadcast captures Los Lobos a little over 3 years later, on November 3, 1990, 29 years ago today, at the Bottom Line in New York.

As promised yesterday, here's another one from the band I saw live more timeS than any other (and almost more than all the other concerts I've been to combined), the one and only Grateful Dead.  This soundboard recording captures the band at the Nassau Coliseum on November 2, 1979, 40 years ago today, and while maybe not quite up to the standards of the prior night (posted yesterday), it still finds the band in top form.

Paul McCartney - 2018-11-01 - Tokyo, Japan (IEM Matrix)

Since 1993, I've seen Sir Paul 8 times, and the last 3, in 2015, 2016 and 2017, I went with both my wife and my twin boys. We started that run back in June 2015, a Father's Day show in Philadelphia, which was also the first concert my boys ever went to! The set list that night included the tune Macca wrote for Destiny, one of my boy's favorite video games. We followed that up with an August 7, 2016 show at Giants Stadium on what what would have been my Dad's 83rd birthday had he not passed away in 2012. Sir Paul broke out Birthday that night, the first time I had ever heard him play that song live. The on September 15, 2017, at Madison Square Garden on my Mom's 85th birthday, Macca topped all the past performances I saw. For over 3 hours, Sir Paul entertained us as almost no other performer can, telling stories, paying tribute to lost friends and lovers, playing over 40 songs scanning almost 60 years of musical history. He played Jet, my boy's favorite McCartney tune, a song that had been missing from the 2 previous shows they attended.  He brought Bruce Springsteen and Miami Steve on stage to play I Saw Her Standing There.  When the crowd wouldn't stop cheering for his special guests, Macca, ever the consummate showman, did the only thing he could do - to Springsteen's surprise, he counted the band down into a 2nd complete version of the tune! The show was a masterpiece, a Picasso unfolding live on stage, to the soundtrack of the greatest rock music ever played.

This IEM Matrix recording captures Sir Paul about a year after that incredible Madison Square Garden SHOW, on tour in Tokyo on November 1. 2018, just a year ago today. Macca has made a habit of touring Japan in recent years, even returning to Budokan Hall in Tokyo on several occasions, where the Beatles made history in 1966 by becoming the first rock and roll act to perform at the historic venue.  This show ventures several tunes from Egypt Station, the album he released in October 2018 that went straight to #1, his 8th disc to top the charts and first since 1982's Tug Of War.  Download this one, then stop back on November 5 and 8 for 2 more from this tour.

The Band - 1970-11-01 - Pittsburgh, PA (SBD)

I only saw The Band live twice, both times in 1985. The first concert, in August at Pier 84 in New York, they were the lead in for CSN. The 2nd show, in October, they headlined at one of their favorite venues, the Lone Star Cafe. Of course, those shows featured The Band without Robbie Robertson, who ended his association with The Band at the Last Waltz in November 1976.

Today's post goes back to those Robbie Robertson days. In August 1970, The Band released, Stage Fright, their 3rd studio album. The disc was darker intone than their previous releases, reflecting themes of fear and alienation. The Band had gone out on the road as a headline act for the first time in 1970, which placed new pressures on the group and created tensions between the band members. In fact, in the wake of this tour and album, Robbie Robertson began exerting a greater influence on The Band’s direction, which would become a sore point for years to come. Todd Rundgren engineered the album, while Glyn Johns produced the final mix for release. Stage Fright featured numerous tunes that would become staples of The Band’s repertoire, including the title track, The Shape I’m In, The W.S. Walcott Medicine Show and Daniel and the Sacred Harp.  Despite not yielding a top 40 hit, the album rose to #5 on the Billboard charts. It would be 5 years before another studio disc from the group cracked the top 40. This soundboard recording captures The Band soon after the release of Stage Fright in Pittsburgh on November 1, 1970, 49 years ago today.  Download this soundboard recording to hear the group play cuts from the last album where every band member, as opposed to just Robbie Robertson, contributed original material.

Van Morrison - 1978-11-01 - Bottom Line, New York, NY (FM)

I've seen Van Morrison 7 times, across 3 decades - the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s - and each time has been unique. Van changes up the set list from tour to tour, and you never know what mood he'll be in for a concert. For example, his September 1990 show at the Garden State Art's Center was a contemplative, introspective performance. In contrast, his April 1992 concert at the Paramount in New York was an upbeat religious celebration. Then again, his 1989 show at The Beacon Theatre was a bluesy affair, with a guest appearance by John Lee Hooker. With Van, you never quite know what you'll be seeing or hearing, which is part of the fun. In any event, my wife and I are hoping that one day will get to see him play Some One Like You, as that's our wedding song.

Today's post goes back to well before I ever saw Van Morrison live, to his fabled comeback tour in 1978.  After releasing 6 albums between 1970 to 1974, Van took 3 years off, not releasing another album until 1977’s aptly named “A Period Of Transition”, a collaboration with Doctor John. Van’s real return; however, came in the spring of 1978, when he released Wavelength, which at the time became the fastest selling album of his career. Most critics also praised the disc, with Time magazine, for example, stating that “Wavelength is good enough to stand close by Morrison's best work, a record of sinuous, sensuous magic. The man just can't be beat.” Perhaps energized by his new album, Van took to the road in the fall of 1978, playing a host of shows at small intimate theaters, such as his November 1 shows at The Bottom Line in New York, 41 years ago today. Grateful Dead - 1979-11-01 - Uniondale, NY (SBD) 

If you've been a regular visitor to this blog, you know that I saw the Grateful Dead live more times than I can count. In 1979, I saw the band twice, on January 8 and on September 16, both times at Madison Square Garden.  I picked the wrong New York arena that year.  Despite my loathing of the Nassau Coliseum as a concert venue, the Dead played 5 shows in Uniondale in 1979, and 2 were masterpieces. The first one, on January 10, featured both Dark Star and Saint Stephen as part of the set list. The second, as captured in this soundboard recording, from November 1, 1979, 4 decades ago this very day, featured one of the longest and best Scarlet Begonias into Fire On The Mountain seques, a 35 minute extravaganza featuring great interplay between Jerry Garcia and Brent Mydland.  Download this one, then come back tomorrow for another one from Uniondale in 1979.
