The Police 1979 - #1: In early 1979, the Police toured relentlessly, trying to build upon the success of their first album, Outlandos d'Amour and first single, Roxanne. They spent almost all of March, April and May traveling across the US, then immediately launched into a European tour that lasted all of June. They then took a few weeks off in July and August to put the finishing touches on their 2nd album, Regatta De Blanc. That disc would be released in September, and reach the #25 spot on the Billboard charts in the US. It would be even more successful in the UK, climbing all the way to number 1. This soundboard recording captures the band on June 4, 1979 at the Pinkpop Festival, 42 years ago today, just before the entered the studio to finish Regatta De Blanc. The set list includes the tune that would be the first single from Regatta De Blanc Message In A Bottle, which would also become the first tune by The Police to reach #1 in the UK. Grateful Dead 1978 - #1:  After a scintillating Spring East coast tour -  Shows from April 15, 22 and 24, as well as May 10, May 11, and May 14 have all been officially released -  the Grateful Dead returned to the West Coast and took a bit of time off.  They only played 2 shows in June, both stadium events. This soundboard recording captures the first of those 2 shows, from June 4, 1978, 43 years ago today.  By the way, also on the bill that day was Wa koo, Elvin Bishop, Bonnie Rait, and Warren Zevon.  The Dead capped the festival with a thunderous show that even includes motorcycle sounds from the Hells Angels!  Download this one, then come back on June 25 for the 2nd half of this Same Tour, Different Show set.

10,000 Maniacs 1993 - #1: In September 1992, 10,000 Maniacs released the album Our Time in Eden, which featured the singles These Are Days, Candy Everybody Wants and Few and Far Between. The disc would be the last that the band would record with original lead singer Natalie Merchant. While recording of the disc in 1991, Merchant had informed the other members of the group that she would be leaving with the next 2 years to start a solo career. This FM broadcast captures 10,000 Maniacs on their last tour with Merchant on June 3, 1993, 28 years ago today, in Los Angeles. Just 2 months later, on August 5, 1993, Merchant formally announced her departure from the band on MTv. Download this one, then come back on June 27 for part 2 of this Same Tour, Different Show set.

The Other Ones 1998 - #1: After Jerry Garcia's passing in August 1995, the band officially retired the name the Grateful Dead, announcing "that the long strange trip of the uniquely wonderful beast known as the Grateful Dead is over. Although individually and in various combinations they will undoubtedly continue to make music, whatever the future holds will be something different in name and structure." For the next 2 years, the band members pursued individual endeavor, though, they worked collectively to sponsor The Furthur Festival, a summer tour that featured a collection of bands with links to Dead, such as Bob Weir's Ratdog, Mickey Hart's Mystery Box, Hot Tuna, Los Lobos and former GD keyboardist, Bruce Hornsby. Then, in 1998, they decided, in the words of the blues Brothers, to put the band back together. The 1998 version of the Furthur Festival saw Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Phil Lesh & Mickey Hart reunited to form The Other Ones, which was lifted from the title of the Grateful Dead tune That's It For The Other One. The name was appropriate it reflected that the new band was something different from, yet related to, the Dead. The 1998 version of the Other Ones also included Bruce Hornsby, John Molo, Steve Kimock, Mark Karan and Dave Ellis.  This soundboard recording captures the Other Ones warming up for their first tour, in San Rafael, on June 2, 1998, 23 years ago today.  Download this one, the stop back on June 30 for the secobd part of this Same Tour, Different Show entry.

Sinatra World Tour 1962 - #1: In 1962, Frank Sinatra launched a world tour that took him to Japan, Hong Kong, Israel, Greece, Italy, Spain, France, England, and Monaco. He was backed by Bill Miller (piano), Irv Cottler (drums), Al Viola (guitar), Harry Klee (flue/sax), Ralph Pena (bass), and Emil Richards (vibes), The tour was the largest humanitarian gesture of Fran;s long storied career. Every concert was designed to raise money for children's charities. At the press conference prior to the tour, Sinatra said he was "an over privileged adult, [who] ought to help underprivileged children." Frank paid for the entire tour, even though first lady Jackie Kennedy had offered to have the State Department sponsor the venture. Buddy Rich, who had played drums for Sinatra, described the tour as follows: "He took [six] of the best musicians in Los Angeles, He chartered an airplane, went to Japan, went to London [to raise money] for the orphanages. He paid the transportation of the entire technical crew, plus the musicians, plus the entertainers. He gave every musician a set price plus their expenses for hotels and food. And nobody ever knew about it. He just went over and did this out of the goodness of his heart. You gotta be some kind of a beautiful man to do this." This soundboard recording captures Sinatra during that legendary tour in London on June 1, 1962, 59 years ago today.
