1989: As long time readers of So Many Roads know, I've spent numerous posts discussing the Dead's renaissance between 1989 and 1991. The number of official releases from that period is a testament to the caliber of the band's performances in that era, as they include:

• the Giant Stadium Shows from July 9 and 10, 1989
• The 2 night stand at RFK Stadium from July 12 and 13, 1989
• the famed Warlock shows in Hampton Virginia on October 8 and 9, 1989

• the Landover, Maryland show on March 15, 1990 
• the Knickerbocker arena run from March 24 to 26, 1990; 
• 2 (yes 2) box sets from Spring 1990, featuring every show from that tour - the only other tour to be released in its entirety in Europe 1972
• a show from from Mountain View CA from June 16, 1990
• a show from from Pittsburgh from July 8, 1990
• the Madison Square Garden concerts from September 14 to 20, 1990.

Pink Floyd - 1994-05-05 - Tampa, FL (SBD)

1994: On March 30, 1994, Pink Floyd launched their Division Bell Tour, in support of the album of the same name. This marked the 2nd tour and album since Roger Waters left the band in 1985 and David Gilmour took on the leadership role in the group. The album went to #1 on the Billboard charts as soon as it was released, but the impressive sales were not matched by glowing reviews. In fact, most critics panned the album. Rolling Stone, for example, wrote that Gilmour's guitar solos "were once the band's centrepieces, as articulate, melodic and well-defined as any in rock, but he now has settled into rambling, indistinct asides that are as forgettable as they used to be indelible." The critics had little impact on the fans, who not only bought 3 million copies of the disc in the US alone, but turned out in droves for the live shows. The band played to 5.5 million people in 68 cities; with over $250 million in ticket sales, making it, at the time, the largest grossing tour in history. This soundboard recording captures Pink Floyd on May 5, 1994, 28 years ago today, in Tampa. What no one knew at the time was that it would also be the last Pink Floyd tour. 1980: In February 1980, Warren Zevon released the album Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School, the follow up to his critically acclaimed disc Excitable Boy. While the new album climbed up to #20 on the Billboard charts, it lacked the consistency and the collection of memorable tunes of its predecessor. Bad Luck is notable, however, for featuring a host of guests, including Jackson Browne, Glenn Frey, Linda Ronstadt, Waddy Wachtel and Joe Walsh, not to mention a tune, Jeannie Needs a Shooter, written with Bruce Springsteen. This FM broadcast captures Warren on tour in support of the album at the Roxy in Los Angeles on May 4, 1980, 42 years ago today.

1987: In 1987, the Neville Brothers released the album Uptown on the EMI label, featuring guests including Branford Marsalis, Keith Richards, and Carlos Santana. The disc's title pays homage to the New Orleans neighborhood in which the Nevilles grew up.  This soundboard recording captures the Nevilles on tour in support of Uptown in Poughkeepsie on May 3, 1987, 35 years ago today.

1981:  In 1978, Joe Cocker released the album Luxury You Can Afford. It wopuld be his only album on the Asylum label. He would not release another disc until 1982, switching over to Island Records in the process. In between, Cocker did what he did best - perform live. This FM broadcast captures him in Denver on May 2, 1981, 41 years ago today, performing tunes from Luxury You Can Afford along with classics such as Feeling Alright, You Are So Beautiful, With A Little Help From My Friends and The Letter.

Bruce Hornsby - 1998-05-01 - Knoxville TN (SBD)

1998: In 1998, after several years of performing solo, Bruce Hornsby formed the Noisemakers, a new backing band consisting of John "JT" Thomas on keyboards, Bobby Read on woodwinds, JV Collier on bass, Doug Derryberry on guitar, and Michael Baker on drums, who was eventually replaced by Sonny Emory. The Noisemakers provided Bruce with new opportunities to reinvent his music in innovative and creative ways. In fact, at this point, Hornsby stopped planning set lists for his concerts, instead taking spontaneous requests from the audience to build each performance. At each show, Hornsby encompassed rock, jazz, blues, country, Broadway and classical music, all within a jam band framework. He gave several of his classic songs new arrangements, such as transforming Valley Road into sounding much like the Grateful Dead’s Wharf Rat. He often interspersed snippets of tunes from other artists into his own songs, such as incorporating Under The Boardwalk into Fields of Gray. This soundboard recording captures Hornsby during thattransformative year, on May 1, 1998, 2 dozen years ago today, in Knowville.
