Steve Miller - 1974-01-05 - San Francisco, CA (SBD)

Steve Miller was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016, though it wasn;t all sunshine and roses, to coin a very old phrase. Durig his induction sopeech, Miller urged the hall to be more inclusive of women and to do more for music education. Then, in a press conference after the ceremony, he complained that the whole induction process was "unpleasant" and said "they need to respect the artists they say they’re honoring, which they don't." Miller was in part annoyed that the rest of the Steve Miller Band was not inducted along with him.

In  any event, this soundboard recording captures the whole Steve Miller Band at Winterland on January 5, 1974, a half century ago today.

Bruce Springsteen - 1985-01-04 - Hampton, VA (Ex Aud)

Bruce Springsteen entered the Rock & Eoll Hall of Fame in 1999, though his faithful backing band, the E-Street Band, didn't get inducted until 2014, when who else, but Bruce made the induction speech. While we won't have the 1999 induction ceremony this month (it was held in March 1999!), you'll hear plenty of Mr. Springsteen at several of the other ceremonies we feature, as he was a frequent guest!

This excellent audience recording captures Bruce and the E Street Band in Hampton on Jnaury 4, 1985, 39 years ago today, during the Born In The USA tour.  The album had been released on On June 4, 1984, and took Sprinsgteen far beyond his traditional fan base in terms of tone, sound, and commercial appeal. Filled with songs about every day Americans doing their best in the face of hardship, acknowledging that the American Dream was far from perfect, Born In The USA saw Springsteen take a political tone for the first time in his music. The album also was his first deliberate attempt to write a popular hit song, and he succeeded beyond even his wildest expectations. The first single from the disc, Dancing In The Dark (notable for Courtney Cox’s appearance in the video dancing with Bruce), went to #2 on the Billboard charts. Six other tunes from Born In The USA would also crack the top 10. The album itself went to #1, and garnered Springsteen 3 Grammy Award nominations.Critics loved the disc, with Robert Christgau giving it a grade of A+ and the Village Voice awarding it album of the year. The tour in support of the album lasted 15 months with Bruce and teh Streeters playing 156 show on 4 continents.

The Band - 1985-01-07 - Lone Star Cafe, New York, NY (SBD)

The Band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.  Robbie Robertson, who had left the group after the Last Waltz in 1976, was present for the ceremony.  Unfortuantely, Levon Helm did not attend due to a dispute with Robertson.  Rick Danko, Garth Hudson and Robertson played The Wait, backed by Eric Clapton on guitar, marking the first time Robbie had perfromed with his band mates since their 1976 farewell show. Clapton, by the way, had delivered The Band's induction speech.  We'll have the msuical highlights from the 1994 ceremony, including The Weight, later this month.

This soundboard recording captures 3/4 of the post Last Walt Band (Danko, Hudson, and Richard Manuel (once again Levon is missing!) at one of their favorite venues, the Lone Star Cafe, on January 3, 1985, 39 years ago today.

While Phil Lesh has not been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame as a solo artist, he did enter in 1994 as a member of the Grateful Dead. We'll bring you the musical highlights from that ceremony later this month.

This excellent audience recording captures the 2020 version of Phil & Friends, which included Stu Allen on guitar, Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz on guitar, Jason Crosby on keyboards, and John Molo on drums, at Terrapin Crossraods in San Rafael on Januaey 2, 2020, 4 yars ago today.

Rock & Roll Hall OF Famers I've Seen Live

Given that our theme this month is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I've looked back at all the concerts I've attended to see how many members of that institution I've seen perform live.

My first concert - Elton John, August 15, 1976, the show that inspired my book (yes, another shameless plug!) featured an eventual Rock & Roll Hall of Famer. Sir Elton was inducted as part of the class of 1994.  Since then,  I've seen 175 concerts featuring well over 100 different artists when you total it all up.  All told, I've seen 42 members of the Rock Hall of Fame take the stage.  They range from the obvious - think Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, & the Rolling Stones - to the "are you really sure these folks were inducted" - such as Joan Jett, Blondie, & ELO. The complete list of Hall of Famers I've seen is below.

Over the last several years, the Hall really seems to have relaxed its standards, probably because otherwise they wouldn't vote in anyone.  For example, we've had Journey, Duran Duran, Donna Summer, and Lionel Richie all get inducted recently, which is not quite The Beatles, The Stones, Led Zep and The Who, if you get where I'm going,  Given that, here's a list of artists I've seen live that I'm somehat surprised aren't in yet:

Don't get me wrong - I know this is all subjective and I'm not saying that any of the 8 bands above are in the category of the Bob Dylan's and Pink Floyd's of the rock world. I just find it hard to believe those 8 are not in, but Lionel Ritchie and Duran Duran are. It's little wonder that the Rock Hall Of Fame often finds folks questionning its credibility.

January's Theme At So Many Roads

For January 2024, our theme will be The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.  Every artist we post in January will be a member of the Rock Hall of Fame. In addition, we'll bring you the musical performances from 12 of the first 13 hall of fame induction ceremonies (1986 to 1996 plus 1998), all of which were held in January (1997 was held in May, while 1999 to 2019 were held in either March or April, with 2020 and beyond held in either October or November).

Just some notes on our posts in January

• Early in the month, we'll have a few more audience recordings than normal, as finding shows from the first 10 days of January can be diffcult since so many bands are off the road at that time, taking a break after the holidays.
• Our rock hall induction posts may not include every song played at the ceremoy, and may not be in the right order.  The material has been accumulated from multple souces (all soundboard or broadcast, fortunately) and historical notes are often incomplete. So we did our best to give you a flavor of the great jams from those ceremonies, such as Jagger and Springsteen teaming up on Satisfaction in 1987 and The Four Tops and Diana Ross collaboration on I Cant Help Myself in 1990, just to name two.
